Your display, demanding apps, background activity, weak cellular coverage and heat are the main battery drains, but no universal ranking applies to every phone. The fastest fix is to open your phone’s Battery report, identify what is unusually high for your own usage, and change that cause first.

Why there is no universal “top battery drain” list

Two identical phones can lose charge at very different rates. Brightness, screen-on time, cellular signal, ambient temperature, app behavior, software version, battery age and the task being performed all change the result. A navigation session in a poor-signal area may use more power than a short game on Wi-Fi; an app that is harmless on one phone may keep another phone’s location or sync service active in the background.

Official Apple and Google guidance therefore does not publish a single percentage ranking for every feature. The useful percentages are the device-specific values shown in your own Battery screen. Treat that report as a diagnosis, not as proof that the same setting is the largest drain for everyone.

First step: read the phone’s own Battery report

iPhone

  1. Open Settings > Battery.
  2. Review the recent usage chart and select a day or period that represents the problem. Apple’s current troubleshooting page identifies daily usage and app/system activity; its Daily Usage chart and Adaptive Power require iOS 26 or later.
  3. Inspect the apps and system categories that stand out. Depending on the iOS version, details can show On Screen time, Background activity, cellular-coverage impact and notifications.
  4. Tap an app to compare how long it was visible with how much work it did while you were using something else. A high on-screen value usually points to display brightness or prolonged use; a high background value points to refresh, location, audio, syncing or another task that continued after you left the app.

Apple’s “Understand your iPhone battery usage and health” guide uses the Battery settings screen to explain app and system activity. Menu labels can change between iOS releases, so use the labels shown on your model rather than assuming every iPhone has identical controls.

Android phones

  1. Open Settings > Battery, then choose Battery usage or a similarly named item. Google notes that some instructions require Android 13 or later and that manufacturers can arrange these controls differently.
  2. Set the period to the time when the drain occurred, if your phone offers a date selector.
  3. Look for an app with unusually high foreground or background use. Open its battery controls to see whether the phone offers unrestricted, optimized or restricted background operation.
  4. Check system entries such as screen, mobile network, phone idle, hotspot or location. A system entry can be the symptom of a condition—such as weak coverage—rather than a setting that should simply be disabled.

Google Pixel

Pixel phones document app-level background controls under the Battery usage area. You can review an app’s background use and, where available, restrict it. Google warns that limiting background activity, location or synchronization can delay automatic refreshes and affect app functions, so apply a restriction only when the report and your needs justify it.

The biggest battery users and the practical fixes

1. Display brightness and screen-on time

The display is often the most visible drain because it can run continuously while you read, watch, play or browse. Apple specifically warns that high screen brightness consumes a lot of energy. A bright screen also encourages long sessions, so total screen-on time matters as much as the slider position.

  • Lower brightness to the lowest level that remains comfortable in your lighting.
  • Turn on automatic or adaptive brightness if it responds well to your environment. If it repeatedly chooses a level you do not need, adjust it manually and observe the next Battery report.
  • Shorten the screen timeout or enable a shorter auto-lock interval.
  • Turn the screen off when audio or another task does not require it. Avoid leaving a bright display active on a desk.
  • On phones with an always-on display, test whether disabling it fits your routine. The feature trades glanceable information for additional display activity; the exact effect depends on the model and implementation.

Do not expect one fixed saving figure. The report can tell you whether the screen was actually responsible during the period you are trying to improve.

2. Apps that keep working in the background

Music playback, location tracking, mail fetching, cloud synchronization, navigation, uploads and frequent content refreshes can continue after an app leaves the screen. Notifications can also wake the phone and trigger network work. A high background value beside an app name is a reason to investigate its settings, not automatic proof that the app is defective.

  1. Open the app’s battery details from the usage report.
  2. Decide which background behavior you genuinely need. Messaging, safety, work and location-sharing apps may need timely updates.
  3. For nonessential apps, disable background refresh, set battery use to optimized, or apply a restricted mode if your phone provides it.
  4. Reduce unnecessary notifications and automatic sync accounts inside the app.
  5. Use the app again for a normal day, then compare the next report rather than changing many unrelated settings at once.

Restricting background work can make an app refresh only when opened, delay alerts, stop uploads until later or interfere with location-based features. Those are the intended trade-offs.

3. Poor cellular coverage and repeated radio work

A phone uses more power when it has to search for a usable signal or maintain a connection in a weak area. Apple identifies low or absent coverage as a factor in battery life. Travel, underground locations, rural roads and buildings with heavy shielding can expose the problem.

  • Use trusted Wi-Fi when practical, especially for long downloads, calls supported by Wi-Fi calling, video and other data-heavy work.
  • Avoid leaving a personal hotspot enabled after the connected device has finished. Hotspot operation keeps the cellular and Wi-Fi radios active and can add traffic from several devices.
  • If you know you will have no coverage for a while and do not need cellular service, turn on Airplane Mode. Restore the connection when you need calls, messages or data.
  • On supported models, review the 5G setting. Apple describes 5G Auto as a mode that can switch to LTE when 5G does not provide a noticeably better experience. Apple’s cited support page lists iPhone 12 and later, iPhone SE (3rd generation) and 5G-capable iPads as eligible examples; exact availability depends on the model, carrier and region.

Turning off cellular, Wi-Fi or location can save radio work but can also disable services you rely on. Choose the least disruptive change that addresses the coverage pattern shown in your report.

4. Navigation, GPS and location services

Extended navigation combines a bright screen, location calculations, map downloads, network communication and often a warm device. Google lists prolonged navigation and GPS use among demanding activities. Location tracking can also continue in the background when an app records a route or shares your position.

  • Download maps over Wi-Fi when the app supports offline areas.
  • Dim the display or let the screen turn off when voice guidance is enough.
  • Stop navigation and route recording when you arrive.
  • Review which apps have continuous location permission. Change nonessential apps to “while using” or the equivalent permission on your phone.
  • Keep location enabled for safety, navigation and automation features that you actually use; disabling it globally can break those functions.

5. Video, streaming and graphics-heavy games

Streaming and gaming combine screen power with processor, graphics, speaker, storage and network activity. Higher frame rates, demanding graphics settings, high resolution and cellular streaming generally increase the workload, although the amount varies by phone and game.

  • Shorten long sessions when you need the battery to last.
  • Use Wi-Fi for large streams or downloads where it is reliable.
  • Lower a game’s frame rate, resolution or effects if those options are available and acceptable.
  • Pause playback instead of leaving a video running in the background.
  • Use a lower display brightness and avoid charging or gaming in a hot place.

6. Camera use and large uploads

Recording video, processing photos, using the viewfinder for a long time and uploading large files can draw power quickly. Camera use also warms the phone, which can make the battery drain faster and may trigger performance limits.

7. Heat

Google Android Help states: “Your battery drains much faster when it’s hot, even when not in use.” Heat can come from direct sun, a hot car, intensive gaming, navigation, charging under insulation or a case that prevents heat from escaping. Keep the phone out of hot environments, remove a thick case temporarily if the manufacturer allows it and pause demanding work until it cools. Never cool a phone with ice or a freezer, which can cause condensation.

A targeted troubleshooting sequence

Use this order so that each change tests a likely cause instead of masking the evidence with a dozen simultaneous restrictions.

  1. Capture a normal baseline. Note the charge level, time, signal conditions and your usual activities. In Settings > Battery, compare the recent period with a normal day and identify the app or system category that differs.
  2. Test the display. Lower brightness, enable automatic brightness if useful and shorten auto-lock or screen timeout. Recheck after a comparable day.
  3. Test the leading app. Determine whether its use was on screen or in the background. Restrict unnecessary background work, notifications or location permission, while preserving functions you need.
  4. Test the environment. If drain appears during travel or weak coverage, use Wi-Fi, stop hotspot sharing and use Airplane Mode where you do not need service. If it appears during gaming, streaming, navigation or camera work, shorten the session and reduce the workload.
  5. Use a power-saving mode for an urgent extension. Turn on Low Power Mode or Battery Saver when preserving charge is more important than immediate background updates or visual effects.
  6. Consider recent software changes. After an iOS update, Apple says background update tasks may continue temporarily and recommends checking again after a few days. For persistent Android problems, Google recommends restarting the phone and checking for system and app updates.
  7. Check battery health on an older phone. If capacity has declined or charging behavior has changed, inspect the manufacturer’s health screen. Treat a service warning as a reason to ask about replacement; do not use replacement as the first response to ordinary high screen, app or signal use.

What Low Power Mode and Battery Saver actually change

iPhone Low Power Mode

Apple says Low Power Mode reduces or disables functions including Mail fetch, “Hey Siri,” Background App Refresh and some visual effects. It is useful when you need the current charge to last, but delayed mail, less frequent refresh and altered animations are expected. Apple’s support page says Low Power Mode turns off automatically after the battery rises above 80 percent.

Android Battery Saver

Google says Android Battery Saver can limit background activity, visual effects, features, network connections and how apps behave. The exact restrictions differ by Android version and manufacturer. Check whether messaging, navigation, synchronization or location sharing still meets your needs before relying on the mode.

These modes are not measurements of which feature used the most power. They are broad policies that reduce several kinds of work at once, often with convenience costs.

How to choose between competing battery settings

Use four questions for every proposed change:

  • Did the Battery report identify this behavior? A setting is more promising when it matches the time and activity shown in the report.
  • What work does it control? Display, radio, location and background limits affect different parts of the system.
  • What will you lose? Possible costs include delayed notifications, less accurate sharing, slower refresh, reduced visual quality or unavailable connectivity.
  • Does your phone support the control? Menus vary by iOS release, Android version, manufacturer and model.

Someone who depends on live navigation or safety-related location sharing may reasonably keep those services active and reduce brightness, background refresh for unrelated apps or unnecessary hotspot use instead.

Battery health versus feature-related drain

A worn battery stores less energy, so the phone may appear to drain quickly even when your behavior has not changed. A sudden increase in screen, app or cellular activity is a usage problem; a gradual loss of runtime, longer charging or a health warning points toward battery aging.

On iPhone, the Battery settings area includes battery-health information, although the exact path and labels vary by generation and iOS version. Apple says a Service indication is a reason to consider battery replacement. A replacement can restore lost capacity, but it will not make a bright display, weak signal or unrestricted background app use consume less energy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the numbers can—and cannot—tell you

No organization-published statistic establishes a universal percentage for brightness, GPS, 5G, games or any other individual setting across phones. Battery screens report percentages for that device, period and workload. A 30 percent “screen” entry means something different on a day of heavy reading than on a day of mostly voice calls, and a “mobile network” entry can reflect the signal environment rather than a single toggle.

Record the same kind of day before and after one change. That simple comparison is more reliable than applying a list of supposedly largest drains from another phone.

Quick checklist for longer charge life

  • Open Settings > Battery and identify the outlier before changing settings.
  • Lower brightness and shorten screen timeout when the display dominates.
  • Restrict background activity only for apps that do not need immediate updates.
  • Use Wi-Fi in weak-cellular areas and turn off hotspot sharing when finished.
  • Use Airplane Mode where there is no coverage and you do not need cellular service.
  • Reduce the duration or quality of navigation, streaming, gaming and camera sessions.
  • Keep the phone cool, especially during charging and intensive use.
  • Use Low Power Mode or Battery Saver when its feature trade-offs are acceptable.
  • After an update, allow a few days for temporary background work to settle; restart and update Android apps if drain persists.
  • Check battery health on an older device and act on a Service warning.

Sources and version qualifications

The guidance above reflects Apple Support’s “If the battery in your iPhone or iPad drains too quickly” (published July 20, 2026), Apple’s “Understand your iPhone battery usage and health” iOS 27 user guide, Google Android Help’s “Get the most life from your Android device’s battery” and Google Pixel Phone Help’s “Fix battery drain problem.” Apple and Google revise menus and eligibility, so the labels on your current phone take precedence.
