Some experimental catalysts have broken down or defluorinated specific PFAS under controlled light exposure, but the results do not establish a general-purpose way to clean contaminated water. One nanocrystal study reported complete defluorination of PFOS under a 405-nm LED in eight hours; other studies found less removal or relied on UV-A light rather than visible light. The compound, light, catalyst and water chemistry all matter.
What does it mean to “clean up” a forever chemical?
PFAS are a large family of compounds. Their carbon–fluorine bonds help make many of them chemically stable, but that stability also means a result for one PFAS cannot be assumed to apply to the whole family. Photocatalyst studies therefore need to be read by compound and by the outcome they actually measured.
- Removal means the measured amount of a target compound in the sample fell. It does not, by itself, show what happened to that compound.
- Degradation means the parent compound was chemically transformed. Some transformation products can persist, including shorter-chain PFAS.
- Defluorination measures the release of fluorine from carbon–fluorine bonds. It is a stronger indication of bond breaking than a drop in the parent compound, but the percentage and test conditions still matter.
For a claim of complete treatment, researchers need to establish not only that the original PFAS declined, but also how much fluorine was released and whether persistent intermediates remain. A parent-compound result alone does not establish complete detoxification.
What have visible-light experiments shown?
Nanocrystals under a 405-nm LED
Arima and colleagues reported complete PFOS defluorination after eight hours of irradiation with a 405-nm LED, and 81% defluorination of the fluorinated polymer Nafion after 24 hours. The paper describes aqueous experiments at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. These are results for the tested materials and experimental conditions, not a performance guarantee for other PFAS, water sources or treatment systems.

The authors attribute the reaction to cooperative multiphoton processes, including light-induced ligand displacement and Auger-related electron injection. They also report a turnover number of 17,200 carbon–fluorine bond dissociations per nanocrystal. That figure describes bond dissociations in the study; it is not a measure of how much contaminated water a treatment plant can process.
A separate visible-light research direction
A 2024 Nature research briefing describes work by Zhang and colleagues that transformed the tested PFAS into fluorine-free products and potassium fluoride using a visible-light-activated catalyst. The briefing presents this as a possible route toward lower-energy disposal research. It does not establish a ready-to-deploy municipal or household treatment process.

Why the other light-driven results are not the same claim
“Light-powered” can refer to different parts of the spectrum. A catalyst that uses UV-A sunlight is not evidence that visible light produced the result. Nor can headline percentages be ranked fairly when studies use different compounds, water, treatment times and endpoints.

|---|---|---|---|
| Arima and colleagues, 2024; semiconductor nanocrystals | PFOS and Nafion; 405-nm LED | Complete PFOS defluorination in 8 hours; 81% Nafion defluorination in 24 hours | Defluorination of these tested materials under the paper’s aqueous experimental conditions; not field-scale performance. |
| NSF summary of a boron-nitride/titanium-dioxide study, 2022 | PFOA; outdoor sunlight using UV-A | About 99% PFOA degradation in deionized water in under 3 hours; about 9 hours in salty water | Degradation under the stated water and exposure conditions. This is UV-A photocatalysis, not a visible-light result. |
| Lashuk and colleagues, 2022; photocatalytic ozonation with WO3/TiO2 | Five PFAS; UVA-visible light | 16% total PFAS removal after 4 hours, with a reported range of 4%–26% | Removal in the tested system, not complete destruction. The authors said the low removals under those conditions warrant evaluating other catalysts or operating conditions. |
The NSF result illustrates why water composition matters: salty water took longer than deionized water in that experiment. It should not be treated as a prediction for every salt-containing source. The 2022 ozonation result also shows that combining light and a catalyst does not automatically produce high removal.

What controls whether a catalyst works?
Performance can shift with the PFAS molecule, catalyst composition and dose, light wavelength and intensity, starting concentration, treatment time and water matrix. A 2024 critical review of PFOA studies identifies wavelength, catalyst dose, concentration and water matrix as variables behind differing reported performance. Results from different setups are not directly comparable unless their conditions and measured endpoints are aligned.
There are also material and engineering challenges. A 2025 review describes low visible-light activity in some materials, charge-carrier recombination and inefficient use of charge carriers as ongoing research issues. It also identifies field-scale validation as a need. These are field-wide challenges, not a verdict that every catalyst has the same weakness.

Does this mean PFAS-contaminated water can be treated at home?
No. The studies described here are experimental research, not instructions for treating drinking water. They do not validate a household lamp, loose catalyst powder, filter or other consumer setup. The evidence also does not establish that these systems are commercially available as validated, field-scale PFAS treatment systems.

Nature’s 2024 briefing describes the potential for lower-energy disposal research, but a laboratory result alone does not show the full energy demand, operating cost, byproduct management or performance at treatment scale. Those practical questions require system-level testing. Until that evidence exists, do not infer that a visible-light catalyst can safely replace an established water-treatment approach.

How to judge the next headline result
- Check which PFAS was tested; evidence for PFOS or PFOA does not automatically cover other PFAS.
- Look for the light spectrum and exposure conditions. Visible light, UVA-visible light and UV-A sunlight are not interchangeable descriptions.
- Identify the endpoint: parent-compound removal, degradation or measured defluorination.
- Check the water matrix, treatment duration, catalyst and dose, and starting concentration. If these differ, percentages may not support a direct comparison.
- Look for analysis of transformation products and released fluorine, as well as testing beyond a controlled laboratory sample.
