Grant an AI desktop agent the narrowest permissions that complete the task. Start with the specific files, applications, and websites it needs; choose read-only access whenever possible; isolate it in a separate standard account or workspace; and require your approval before any irreversible or consequential action. Never assume a permission prompt is a security boundary: anything visible on screen can be exposed, and hostile text in a webpage or document can try to redirect the agent.

The safest default: least privilege, one task at a time

Desktop agents can combine screen understanding, file access, application control, terminal commands, and web browsing. That combination is useful for work such as sorting a project folder or preparing a report, but it also means a mistake can affect data and accounts outside the task. Treat every permission as a capability to justify, not a feature to enable by default.

Before starting, write down the task in one sentence—for example, “summarize the PDFs in this folder and save a draft in the project directory.” Grant only the resources named by that sentence. If the agent cannot complete the work, expand one boundary at a time and record what you changed.

  • Files: select a task folder or working copy rather than an entire home directory or disk.
  • Applications: allow only the editor, spreadsheet, browser, or other app required for the task.
  • Capabilities: begin with viewing; add editing, deletion, execution, or account actions only when necessary.
  • Network: permit the domains required for the job, not unrestricted internet access.
  • Identity: use a separate standard user or isolated workspace when the platform supports it.
  • Approval: keep a person in the loop for money, messages, sign-ins to sensitive sites, terms, and other external consequences.

What a desktop agent can see and do

Screen and app visibility

An agent that controls a graphical desktop commonly uses screenshots to identify buttons, text, and windows. Anything visible can therefore be captured, including notifications, browser tabs, password fields, medical records, tax documents, or chat conversations. Anthropic’s Cowork computer-use help page explicitly warns that screenshots may contain personal or sensitive information and advises keeping banking, health, government, financial, and other confidential apps out of scope.

Close or minimize sensitive windows before granting screen control, disable previews in notifications, and use a separate desktop session where possible. Do not rely on an app-level block alone if the agent can still read the same information through a screenshot, clipboard, file dialog, or browser tab.

Files and folders

File permission is both a confidentiality and an integrity decision. Read access lets an agent index, summarize, or search content; write access lets it alter that content; delete access can destroy it; and broad folder access may expose unrelated personal data. Give research and review tasks read-only access. For edits, use a copy in a task folder or a version-controlled branch, then inspect the diff before merging or replacing originals.

Microsoft’s description of a Windows preview limits an agent by default to known folders and asks for authorization outside them. That is a useful model: a narrowly named folder is safer than a blanket home-directory grant, even when the agent appears trustworthy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Commands and external tools

Terminal or shell permission can be more powerful than a file picker. A command may read environment variables, install software, delete files, open network connections, or invoke another program. VS Code’s agent documentation distinguishes manual approvals, permission levels, workspace trust, and OS-level sandboxing for covered terminal processes. It also cautions that the sandbox does not cover every tool and is not equivalent to a virtual machine or a separate user account.

Start with commands that inspect or generate output in the task directory. Require approval for package installation, scripts downloaded from the internet, elevated privileges, destructive commands, and operations that touch paths outside the workspace.

Permissions to grant by task type

Task Minimum useful access Usually keep blocked Human checkpoint
Summarize documents Read-only access to selected files; no network unless needed for a cited source Editing, deletion, unrelated folders, sensitive apps Review the summary and any external sources
Organize or rename files Read and write in one task folder; trash or delete disabled initially Full-disk access, system folders, cloud accounts not involved in the task Preview the proposed file changes before applying them
Edit code Read and write in a repository or branch; terminal access limited to the project Production credentials, global configuration, unrestricted network Inspect the diff and run tests before commit or merge
Research on the web Browser access to required domains; read page content Password managers, banking, healthcare, government portals, downloads and external app launches Approve sign-ins, uploads, submissions, and quoted conclusions
Prepare a purchase or message Drafting access to the relevant app, without send or payment authority Payment instruments, address books, automatic send, acceptance of terms Personally verify recipient, amount, contents, and terms, then click the final control

A practical setup procedure

  1. Define the boundary. Name the task, the output location, the applications involved, and the domains required. Write down what is explicitly out of scope, such as personal email or financial sites.
  2. Create an isolated workspace. Use a dedicated project folder, a disposable browser profile, or a separate standard operating-system account. Microsoft Security’s 2026 least-privilege guidance recommends a dedicated identity, a documented purpose, and a named human owner for agent access.
  3. Prepare safe inputs. Copy source files into the workspace, remove secrets from examples, and close confidential windows. If a document contains credentials, tokens, or personal records, redact or omit it rather than hoping the agent will ignore those sections.
  4. Set file and app permissions. Select only the folder and applications required. Choose read-only first. Add write permission to a working copy only after confirming that the task genuinely needs it.
  5. Constrain the network. Allow only the domains needed for research or an API call. Keep browser and shell network controls separate where the platform offers that distinction. AWS guidance recommends domain limits and avoiding sensitive accounts; Edge’s preview describes scoped sites and blocks on downloads and external application launches.
  6. Configure approvals. Turn on manual confirmation for sign-ins, purchases, payments, messages, file deletion, software installation, terms acceptance, and any action that changes an external system. A draft may be automated; sending or submitting it should remain your decision.
  7. Run a low-risk trial. Ask the agent to list files or produce a preview rather than making changes. Watch which windows it opens, what it reads, and whether it asks for broader access than the task requires.
  8. Review and revoke. Inspect file diffs, logs, browser history, and sent items. Remove temporary permissions, delete the workspace if it contained copied secrets, and stop the agent immediately if it behaves unexpectedly.

Why permission prompts are not enough

Prompt injection through pages and documents

Web pages, PDFs, emails, and interface text are untrusted data. They can contain instructions aimed at the agent, such as requests to reveal a secret, visit a different site, or ignore the user’s original goal. Microsoft describes this as cross-prompt injection through UI elements and documents. AWS similarly warns that content an agent sees can override instructions or trigger unintended actions.

Tell the agent to treat page and document instructions as data, not authority. More importantly, enforce the rule technically: keep secrets out of reach, restrict domains, disable downloads and external app launches where possible, and require approval before a page can cause a real-world action. Google’s Chrome security description says its agentic capabilities check pages for indirect prompt injection and ask for confirmation before sensitive sites, password-manager sign-in, purchases, payments, messages, and other consequential web actions. Feature names and controls can change, so verify the settings in the Chrome version you use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cross-application effects

An agent can carry information from one app to another through the clipboard, screenshots, files, or typed input. Anthropic’s documentation notes that actions in one app can affect other apps and that there is no sandbox between the computer-use feature and applications. A block on one application therefore does not make the whole desktop safe if the agent can open another app that contains the same data.

How to handle high-impact actions

Money and purchases

Do not grant unattended authority to buy goods, transfer funds, change payment details, or approve a financial transaction. Let the agent compare options or fill a draft order, then verify the merchant, item, quantity, total, shipping address, and recurring-charge terms yourself. Keep payment credentials in a password manager that requires your deliberate confirmation rather than exposing them to the agent.

Messages and publishing

Drafting an email, post, ticket, or code review is different from sending or publishing it. Require a final confirmation that checks recipients, attachments, quoted text, links, and tone. This protects against both ordinary mistakes and prompt injection that substitutes a new recipient or asks the agent to disclose confidential material.

Sign-ins and legal terms

Keep authentication to sensitive sites, acceptance of contracts, consent forms, and account-recovery changes under direct human control. If a browser agent reaches a login page unexpectedly, stop and reassess why that site is needed. A confirmation dialog is useful only when you can see the exact action and the account involved.

Comparing permission systems

When evaluating a desktop-agent product or feature, compare the controls rather than the marketing label. The following questions expose important differences:

Axis Questions to ask
Scope Can access be limited per app, folder, tool, or domain, or is it whole-desktop?
Capability Is the agent limited to viewing, or can it edit, delete, execute commands, install software, and use accounts?
Isolation Does it run under a separate identity or contained workspace? Which operations remain outside that boundary?
Network Can outbound traffic be restricted to named domains, with separate browser and shell controls?
Approval Which actions pause for confirmation, and can you change that policy?
Visibility and recovery Can you watch the screen, take over, stop the agent, inspect diffs, revoke access, and identify actions that cannot be undone?

What current product examples show

Windows Copilot Actions

Microsoft’s Windows Experience Blog post dated October 16, 2025 describes an experimental preview with a separate standard agent account, an agent workspace, limited known-folder access, user monitoring and takeover, and possible additional approval for sensitive actions. Those controls describe that preview, not a timeless Windows capability; check whether the same options exist in your edition and release.

Chrome agentic capabilities

Google’s security post dated December 8, 2025 describes confirmation gates for sensitive sites, password-manager sign-in, purchases, payments, messages, and other consequential web actions, along with checks for indirect prompt injection. Availability and exact settings depend on the Chrome version and rollout.

Claude Cowork computer use

The Cowork help page says the feature requests permission per app, can block selected apps, and uses screenshots of the visible screen. It identifies the feature as beta, says there is no sandbox between the agent and applications, and warns that safeguards can fail. Keep confidential windows closed and supervise early runs.

VS Code agents

VS Code documentation covers manual approvals, permission levels, diff review, workspace and domain trust, and OS-level sandboxing for covered terminal processes. Its warning that sandboxing is neither a virtual machine nor a user-account boundary is important when deciding where credentials and production data may reside.

Amazon Bedrock Agents Classic computer use

AWS labels its computer-use capability beta and states that Bedrock Agents Classic is no longer open to new customers. Its recommendations—dedicated virtual machines or containers, minimal privileges, data minimization, restricted domains, and human oversight—remain useful as general design guidance, but this should not be treated as a currently available consumer desktop product.

Edge Actions

Microsoft’s October 2025 preview post describes scoped sites, safety checks, blocked downloads, and restrictions on launching external applications. Because it is a preview, verify the current feature set before relying on any particular restriction.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Monitoring, failure signs, and recovery

For the first runs, stay at the keyboard. Pause the agent if it opens an unlisted app, requests a broader folder, follows instructions embedded in a document, attempts a new domain, or tries to send, purchase, delete, install, or sign in without a clear reason. Review the activity log and the agent’s explanation, but do not treat a plausible explanation as proof that the action was safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If something goes wrong, stop the agent, revoke its tokens and app permissions, disconnect the affected account if necessary, and preserve logs before deleting the workspace. Restore files from version control or a known-good backup. Contact the relevant service immediately for unauthorized payments or messages; those external actions may not be reversible merely because local files can be restored.

A permission policy you can reuse

For a new desktop-agent task, apply this policy:

  • Read-only access to named files and folders by default.
  • Write access only to a disposable copy, task folder, or version-controlled branch.
  • No banking, healthcare, government, investment, password-manager, or other confidential app access.
  • Network access limited to required domains, with downloads and external launches blocked unless essential.
  • A separate standard identity or isolated workspace whenever supported.
  • Mandatory human confirmation for spending, transfers, messages, sign-ins to sensitive sites, terms, deletion, installation, and publication.
  • Continuous observation during initial runs, followed by a review and prompt revocation of temporary access.

This approach lets an agent be useful without giving it the authority of your everyday desktop account. Expand permissions only when a specific failure demonstrates that the task needs more, and narrow them again when the task is complete.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I give an AI agent full access to my computer?

No. Use the smallest set of folders, applications, capabilities, and network destinations that can complete the stated task, preferably in a separate standard account or isolated workspace.

Can an AI agent read files I did not explicitly select?

It may be able to if it has broad folder, shell, or screen access. Restrict the workspace, close sensitive windows, and use read-only permissions to reduce unintended exposure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is an approval prompt a complete security boundary?

No. Prompts can be bypassed by mistakes or hostile instructions in pages and documents. Combine approvals with technical sandboxing, domain limits, separate identities, and human monitoring.

What should I do after an agent makes an unexpected change?

Stop it, revoke access and tokens, preserve logs, inspect affected accounts and files, and restore from a known-good backup or version-controlled copy. Contact the service promptly for irreversible external actions.
