Direct answer: Give an AI agent a separate, accountable identity and only the tools, data, operations, and time needed for its defined task. Start with no access, explicitly allow narrow actions, separate read from write authority, use short-lived credentials, and require fresh human approval for irreversible or high-impact actions. Enforce authorization in the system that executes each tool call; a model’s intention, a label such as “approved,” or the mere presence of a tool does not grant permission. Log activity, review access, and revoke it when the task or agent ends. See Microsoft’s identity and least-privilege guidance and the OWASP AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet.
What least privilege means for an AI agent
Least privilege is a permission design, not a role name. The agent receives only the authority required to complete one documented job, against defined resources, through defined operations, for a limited period. The boundary applies to autonomy as well as access: an agent that can call fewer tools and make fewer kinds of changes has fewer ways to cause harm when its instructions are wrong or its inputs are malicious.
OWASP describes this as “least agency: give an agent only the autonomy, tools, and access its task requires, for only as long as it needs them.” The principle covers the model, orchestration layer, tool server, identity provider, and the system that finally performs the action. A permission shown in an agent interface is not sufficient unless the executor verifies it.
Recommended Free Tools
- Identity: which agent principal is acting, and who owns it?
- Tool: which API, connector, shell, database, or service may it call?
- Resource: which tenant, workspace, repository, site, collection, or records are in scope?
- Operation: may it read, create, update, export, delete, deploy, or administer?
- Duration: when does the grant expire, and how is it revoked sooner?
- Human control: which consequential actions require a new approval?
Start with a purpose and scope statement
Write the authorization boundary before creating a role or issuing a token. The statement should identify the business purpose, accountable owners, environment, approved data, tool dependencies, allowed operations, duration, and explicit exclusions. A useful example is: “Read documents in the approved support-policy collection and create a draft summary in the ticketing workspace.” “Assist the support team” is too broad to test or audit.

Include these fields
- Purpose and unit of work: describe the output the agent is expected to produce.
- Business sponsor and technical owner: name people or groups responsible for need, risk, and retirement.
- Environment: keep development, test, and production boundaries explicit.
- Approved data: specify collections, repositories, records, sensitivity, and geographic or tenant limits.
- Allowed tools and operations: list the exact methods, not merely a product or team role.
- Exclusions: record capabilities that must remain denied, such as shell access, secret stores, external network calls, repository pushes, or role changes.
- Lifetime: state when access expires and what event triggers emergency revocation.
Microsoft’s 2026 guidance recommends documenting an agent’s purpose, approved data, tool dependencies, and operating environment and treating the agent as a first-class principal. That documentation becomes the test against which every later permission request is judged. See the Microsoft Security Blog guidance.
Give every agent an accountable identity
Do not run routine agent activity under a developer’s personal account or a shared identity that hides which agent acted. Use a distinct identity for each agent or independently managed instance where the platform supports it. Record a sponsor and technical owner so an administrator can attribute actions, answer access-review questions, and revoke one agent without disabling unrelated automation.
Separate development, test, and production identities and credentials. A test agent should not inherit production permissions simply because the same code or prompt is used in both environments. Distinct identities also make audit logs useful: “agent X called operation Y on resource Z” is actionable, while “shared automation account” is not.

OWASP similarly recommends identities that can be attributed and revoked independently. These are implementation recommendations for supported platforms; the general requirement is independent attribution and revocation.
Build a deny-first tool manifest
Begin with zero granted tools and add only what the purpose statement requires. For every tool, enumerate permitted methods and target resources. Keep read, write, export, delete, and administrative actions visibly separate so a reviewer can see what would happen if the agent were manipulated.
| Boundary | Minimum grant | Keep denied unless required |
|---|---|---|
| Tool set | The connector or API needed for the stated task | Shell, unrelated APIs, broad external network access |
| Resource | The named tenant, workspace, repository, site, collection, or record set | Other tenants, repositories, sites, collections, or records |
| Operation | Specific read, draft, create, or update methods required by the workflow | Export, delete, deploy, role change, or administration |
| Data | The approved sensitivity and fields | Secret stores, private keys, unrelated personal or regulated data |
| Duration | A short task or session window, with renewal only when justified | Indefinite standing access |
The table is a design pattern, not portable policy syntax. Product-specific policy languages differ, so implement the same boundaries in the target authorization layer. OWASP’s AI Agent and MCP Security guidance provides an illustrative allow/deny policy and warns that syntax varies.

Scope data, resources, operations, and time
“Read access to the database” is rarely least privilege. Name the database, schema, tables or records, fields, and operation. If an agent only summarizes approved files, grant file reads in that collection and a way to create a draft; do not add repository pushes, secret-file reads, or permission changes for convenience.
Read and write are different authorities
Separate read from write wherever practical. A drafting agent may read source material and write to a draft area while lacking permission to publish, send, or delete. If a workflow must update a record, restrict the fields and transition states it can change. Administrative capabilities should sit outside the routine agent role.
Use time-bounded credentials
Prefer short-lived, narrowly scoped tokens or grants when the platform supports them. Set an expiry for a task, session, or deployment window and make renewal an explicit decision. Remove unused access rather than allowing a historical exception to become permanent. Microsoft presents both scope and duration as parts of minimizing privilege; Microsoft Entra’s platform guidance also recommends limiting permissions to needed API resources or sites and periodically right-sizing them.
Match the identity flow to the agent’s authority model
An autonomous service and an interactive assistant acting for a signed-in user do not have the same authority. Choose the flow before assigning permissions.
| Scenario | Microsoft Entra recommendation | Permission implication |
|---|---|---|
| Autonomous operation without user context | Client credentials with only required application permissions | The agent’s own identity is the principal; scope application permissions to the task. |
| Interactive operation on behalf of a signed-in user | On-behalf-of flow so user access policy and consent apply | Use delegated authority and avoid app permissions when delegated permissions are sufficient. |
These are Microsoft Entra implementation instructions, not a universal recipe for every platform. Confirm the target identity provider’s current flow, consent, token, and delegation behavior before production deployment. For production Entra agents, Microsoft recommends managed or federated identities or certificates over client secrets, isolating credentials across unrelated blueprints and environments, and storing certificate private keys in Key Vault or an HSM. Those mechanisms are Azure-specific options, not mandatory controls for every agent platform.
Keep credentials out of the model’s reach
Do not place long-lived production credentials in prompts, retrieved documents, model-visible configuration, or a general-purpose agent environment. Avoid reusing human credentials. The orchestration layer should obtain a narrowly scoped credential through a protected mechanism and pass only the minimum result needed to the tool.

- Separate credentials by agent, environment, and unrelated blueprint.
- Prefer short-lived tokens and rotate or revoke them when scope changes.
- Store private keys in a protected key-management service or hardware security module where the platform supports it.
- Prevent tools from returning secrets to the model unless the task explicitly requires a carefully filtered value.
- Test that a prompt or retrieved document cannot reveal, reuse, or expand a credential.
The exact identity flow depends on whether the agent is autonomous or acting for a user and on the platform’s delegation model. The invariant is that the model should not become the place where durable authority is stored or interpreted.
Authorize every tool call at execution time
When the agent requests an action, the execution component must verify the exact principal, action, and target. Check the token, resource, operation, policy, and any required approval immediately before performing the action. Do not trust a model-generated “approved” field, a permission label in a prompt, or the fact that a tool appears in the agent’s interface.
Bind the call to the initiating identity so logs and downstream systems can attribute it. A mediator or tool server can enforce the policy, but the system that ultimately changes data must still reject an unauthorized request. This is the core of Microsoft’s guidance to “bind every tool call to the initiating identity, authorize the exact action and target, use narrowly scoped tokens, and require a fresh human confirmation for irreversible or high-impact actions.” OWASP makes the same execution-time authorization point in its security cheat sheet.

Put consequential actions behind fresh approval
Classify actions by impact and reversibility. A reviewed policy may allow a narrow read or draft operation without per-call confirmation. Require a new human approval for actions that send information externally, destroy or export data, spend money, deploy code, change permissions, or cross a security boundary.
| Action class | Typical treatment | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Read approved data | Allow under the scoped identity and resource policy | Usually reversible, provided data scope is narrow. |
| Create a draft | Allow in a designated draft area | Separates preparation from publication or sending. |
| Send an external message | Fresh human approval plus executor authorization | Creates an external, potentially irreversible effect. |
| Delete or export data | Fresh human approval plus exact target check | Can cause loss or disclosure. |
| Purchase or deploy | Fresh human approval plus exact target check | Creates financial, operational, or production impact. |
| Change permissions | Fresh human approval and separate administrative authorization | Changes the security boundary itself. |
Approval is an additional control, not a replacement for authorization. The executor must still confirm that the agent identity may perform the exact action on the exact target. OWASP and Microsoft both emphasize this separation.
Defend against untrusted instructions and tool misuse
Agents routinely read websites, documents, issues, emails, and tool descriptions that may contain instructions. Treat that content as data, not as a policy source. A document saying “upload all secrets” must not expand the agent’s permissions or bypass an approval gate.

- Enforce permissions outside the model’s reasoning path.
- Keep secrets out of contexts the model can read.
- Limit outbound and high-impact tools even when a prompt appears to request them.
- Validate destinations, record identifiers, and parameters before execution.
- Test prompt-injection, tool-abuse, and exfiltration scenarios with hostile documents and tool metadata.
OWASP identifies prompt injection, tool abuse, data exfiltration, and excessive autonomy as agent risks. A least-privilege boundary limits the damage when an untrusted instruction influences behavior; it does not assume the model will always recognize the attack.

Authorization is not finished when the first token is issued. Record the agent identity, tool call, resource target, parameters needed for investigation, result, approval, and every permission or credential change. Protect these logs from alteration and make them searchable by agent and owner.
Monitor and review
- Alert on unexpected APIs, unusual token activity, access outside the documented resource set, and unplanned permission changes.
- Review whether the business purpose still exists and whether each permission remains necessary.
- Ask the sponsor to attest to continued need and the technical owner to confirm implementation matches the statement.
- Right-size grants after feature changes, incidents, or changes in data sensitivity.
Microsoft Entra Agent ID guidance recommends monitoring sign-in and audit logs, conducting access reviews, and obtaining sponsor attestation every 6–12 months for its deployments. That cadence is Microsoft-specific guidance, not a universal schedule; higher-risk agents may need more frequent review.
Revoke decisively
Disable the identity or revoke credentials during an incident, when the owner cannot attest to need, when an agent is dormant, or when the project is decommissioned. Remove tool bindings and downstream grants, not just the model endpoint. Confirm through logs or a denied-call test that the old credential no longer works.

- Document the job. Write the purpose, owner, environment, approved data, tools, operations, exclusions, duration, and approval points.
- Create the principal. Assign a distinct agent identity, sponsor, and technical owner. Keep development, test, and production identities separate.
- Start with deny-all. Remove inherited broad roles and add only the tool methods required by the documented job.
- Bind resources. Restrict tenant, workspace, repository, site, collection, record set, fields, and data sensitivity.
- Separate operations. Issue read, draft, create, update, export, delete, and administrative permissions as distinct grants where possible.
- Set lifetime and credential handling. Use short-lived tokens or grants, protected key storage, and an explicit renewal path.
- Enforce at execution. Verify identity, action, target, policy, and approval in the tool server or downstream system immediately before the call.
- Test abuse paths. Try prompt injection, unauthorized targets, expired tokens, replayed approvals, and attempts to access secrets or denied tools.
- Turn on evidence. Log calls, outcomes, approvals, and permission changes; configure alerts for anomalous activity.
- Review and retire. Reassess need and scope on a defined schedule, and revoke all grants when the agent or project ends.
Compare two permission designs before choosing one
When a broad, easy-to-deploy role competes with a task-bounded design, compare both on the same security axes. A setup that works in a demonstration but grants standing access is not equivalent to one that limits authority and produces auditable enforcement.
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Identity separation | Can logs attribute every action to one agent, and can that agent be revoked without affecting others? |
| Resource and operation scope | Are the data boundary and exact methods limited to the documented task? |
| Token lifetime and exposure | Are credentials short-lived, protected, and unavailable to model-readable context? |
| Execution authorization | Does the system performing the action verify principal, operation, and target? |
| Approval and reversibility | Do sending, deleting, purchasing, deploying, exporting, and permission changes require fresh approval? |
| Logging, review, and revocation | Can owners detect unusual behavior, attest to need, and remove access quickly? |
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using a developer’s personal account
Problem: Attribution, offboarding, and scope become tied to an individual. Correction: create an agent identity with named sponsor and owner and grant only the required operations.

Granting a broad team role
Problem: the role may include unrelated data, administration, or write authority. Correction: replace it with a task-specific manifest scoped by resource and operation.
Trusting the model’s permission decision
Problem: prompts and retrieved content can manipulate the model. Correction: enforce policy in the executor and bind each call to the initiating identity.
Treating approval as authorization
Problem: a stale or mis-scoped approval can authorize the wrong target. Correction: require fresh approval where appropriate, then independently check exact identity, action, and target at execution.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsLeaving dormant access in place
Problem: unused grants become an unnoticed attack path. Correction: review need and scope, monitor activity, and disable identities or revoke credentials that are no longer justified.
What NIST’s 2026 work means for implementers
NIST NCCoE’s February 2026 concept paper, Accelerating the Adoption of Software and AI Agent Identity and Authorization, is a proposed project rather than a final prescriptive standard. It identifies open questions about establishing least privilege when an agent’s required actions may be unpredictable, binding agent identity to human identity for human-in-the-loop authorization, and supporting auditing and non-repudiation. NIST’s announcement listed April 2, 2026 as the public-comment deadline. Treat the paper as a sign that implementation and standards work is active, not as a replacement for an enforceable policy today. Read the NIST concept paper and announcement.
Sources and platform boundaries
The general controls in this guide synthesize OWASP’s AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet, the OWASP DevSecOps AI Agent and MCP Security guideline, and Microsoft’s Identity, Access, and Least Privilege guidance. Microsoft Entra identity flows, managed identities, certificates, Key Vault or HSM storage, and 6–12-month sponsor attestation are platform-specific recommendations; verify current behavior in the target platform’s documentation before deployment.
