There is no single best PC game launcher for every library. Choose Playnite for the broadest, most customizable collection manager; GOG GALAXY for a polished cross-store collection with views, filters and statistics; or the Xbox PC app if you use Windows and mainly want a simple list of installed games from supported storefronts. Keep the original store clients installed when you need their installers, updates, cloud saves or account-specific features.
The important distinction is between a library manager that catalogs games you own, and a storefront client that installs and services its own games. An aggregator can make discovery and launching easier without replacing every underlying client.
What “managing your games” can mean

What Playnite is designed to do
Playnite is an open-source game library manager. Its official feature description says it can connect libraries from Steam, Epic, Origin, GOG, Battle.net and Ubisoft Connect, and can show games that are not currently installed. That makes it suitable when your first question is “What do I own?” rather than only “What is installed on this PC?”
Because the library is aggregated, you can browse titles from different stores without opening each client separately. Selecting a game can still hand control to the relevant store or launcher for the operation that service owns.
Organization and customization
Playnite documents customizable themes and extensions, so you can change the presentation and add functions beyond the default library. It also supports playtime tracking and emulation. These features are useful if you want a single catalog for PC games and emulated systems, or if you prefer to build views around genres, backlog status, controller support or your own tags.
The full-screen mode is intended for controller navigation. If you plan to use Playnite from the couch, a PC controller can make that mode easier to operate, but a controller is optional for normal keyboard-and-mouse use.

Local data and privacy considerations
Playnite states that library information is stored locally on the PC and that it does not store user information on remote servers. That is a vendor statement about the product’s design, not an independent privacy audit. Review the permissions and authentication behavior of any extension or connected service you add.
When Playnite is the better choice
- You own games across several PC stores and want one catalog.
- You want uninstalled games included in the same collection as installed ones.
- You care about themes, extensions, emulation or detailed custom organization.
- You want a full-screen, controller-friendly interface without limiting yourself to a single storefront.
- You prefer a local library model and are comfortable keeping the underlying clients for service-specific tasks.

Cross-store collection
GOG GALAXY combines libraries through official and community-created integrations. Its product information says it can list games that are not installed, so it can function as a collection view rather than only an installed-game shortcut.

Community integrations can broaden the services visible in the app, but they also introduce a maintenance variable: an integration may need updating when the connected platform changes its sign-in or library interface. Treat support as integration-specific rather than assuming every service behaves identically.
Finding and sorting games
GOG GALAXY documents custom views, filters, sorting, tags and game statistics. Those tools suit a large backlog: you can create a view for a genre, filter by a tag, sort by a chosen field and use statistics to understand how you spend time in your collection. The value is organization and visibility, not a promise that the app performs every store operation itself.
The client-dependency caveat
GOG explicitly says users may still need other gaming clients for platform-specific functions such as installation, automatic updates and cloud saves. In practical terms, GOG GALAXY can provide the unified list and launch path while another client performs the service operation. Disconnecting a platform also matters for data control: GOG says imported account data can be removed after you disconnect that platform.

When GOG GALAXY is the better choice

What the September 2025 update documents
In its September 15, 2025 announcement, Xbox says that when you install a game from a supported PC storefront, it automatically appears in My Library and in the Most Recent list in the sidebar. The same announcement says storefronts can be hidden in settings. This is a practical way to keep a Windows gaming PC’s installed titles in one place.
Xbox Product Manager Manisha Oza wrote in a June 23, 2025 Xbox Insider announcement: “With the aggregated gaming library, players can conveniently launch games from Xbox, Game Pass, Battle.net and other leading PC storefronts from a single library within the Xbox PC app.” That statement describes the app’s aggregation goal, while the later announcement specifically documents installed games appearing in the library.
What not to assume
The cited Xbox announcement does not say that the app inventories every game you own but have never installed. Do not select it on the assumption that it will be a complete, cross-store ownership database. It is better suited to a Windows user who wants a straightforward launch surface for supported, installed titles.
When the Xbox PC app is the better choice
- You use Windows and want the least complicated installed-game view.
- You regularly launch games from Xbox, Game Pass, Battle.net and other supported PC storefronts.
- You want to hide storefronts you do not use and keep the sidebar focused.
- You do not need extensive themes, extensions, emulation management or a complete uninstalled backlog.
Do aggregators install and update games?
Usually, not for every service. A launcher can perform three different jobs:
- Cataloging: importing ownership or installation information into its own library.
- Launching: opening the game directly or invoking the client that owns it.
- Servicing: downloading files, applying updates, handling authentication and synchronizing saves.
Playnite and GOG GALAXY are strongest as catalog and launch layers. GOG’s own documentation warns that other clients may still be needed for installation, automatic updates and cloud saves. The Xbox PC app’s cited feature description focuses on installed games appearing in its library and recent list. Therefore, keep the original clients available wherever a game’s install, patch, save or account function depends on them.

How to combine your libraries without creating confusion
- List the services you actually use. Separate PC stores, subscriptions and emulators. Do not connect an account merely because an integration exists.
- Decide whether uninstalled games matter. If you want a backlog and ownership catalog, prioritize Playnite or GOG GALAXY. If you only need installed shortcuts on Windows, the Xbox PC app may be sufficient.
- Install the underlying clients first. Store clients remain the authoritative place for downloads, updates, authentication and many save functions.
- Connect accounts through the launcher’s documented integration flow. Use the platform’s normal sign-in and review what data the integration imports.
- Import and clean the library. Hide duplicate entries, remove services you no longer use and apply tags or custom views for backlog, genre or platform.
- Test one game from each service. Confirm that selecting it opens the intended client, that the game starts, and that updates and saves still work through the original platform.
- Keep a fallback path. If an integration breaks or a client is required for a patch or cloud save, launch the game directly from its original service.
Privacy, account connections and local control
Aggregation requires some exchange of account or library information. Playnite states that library information is kept locally and that it does not store user information on remote servers. GOG says imported account data is handled through connected integrations and can be removed after disconnecting a platform. These are provider descriptions, not independent audits or guarantees about every third-party integration.
Before connecting an account, check which permissions are requested, whether the integration is official or community-created, how to disconnect it and what remains cached afterward. A local catalog can reduce dependence on a remote service for browsing, but it does not remove the need to authenticate with a store when that store controls a purchase, download or save.

Common problems and fixes
A game appears twice
Duplicate records can occur when two integrations identify the same title differently. Disable or hide the duplicate entry, then keep the record tied to the store you actually use for launching and updates.

A game is listed but will not start
Open the original client directly and verify that you are signed in, the game is installed and its install path is valid. Aggregators depend on that client’s authentication and launch protocol.

The library is missing an uninstalled game
Check the product’s scope. Playnite and GOG GALAXY document support for uninstalled games; the cited Xbox announcement documents installed titles, not a complete uninstalled inventory. Also confirm that the relevant account integration completed successfully.
Cloud saves or updates do not work from the aggregator
Run the game through its original platform client and allow that client to update and synchronize. GOG specifically notes that other clients may still be required for these platform-specific functions.
An integration stops importing games
Disconnect and reconnect the affected platform, update the launcher or integration, and check the platform’s current sign-in requirements. Community integrations can require maintenance when a service changes its interface.
