There is no evidence here for an objective ranking of the seven best or largest payment gateway companies. Instead, this shortlist covers seven providers relevant to businesses evaluating broader payment services: five with current vendor-described capabilities—Adyen, Stripe, PayPal Enterprise Payments, Checkout.com and Worldpay—and Fiserv and Global Payments as additional market-relevant names. The available evidence supports detailed profiles for the first five, but not a like-for-like assessment of all seven.
“End-to-end” does not mean the same thing at every provider. It can include some combination of gateway, processing, acquiring, fraud controls, settlement, payouts, online checkout and in-person acceptance. The right choice depends on where you sell, how you accept payments and which parts of the payment flow you want one provider to handle.
What “end-to-end” means in payments
A payment gateway securely communicates transaction information between a merchant and its bank or processor. It is only one part of the payment flow: acquiring and merchant-account services, processing through card networks, and issuer authorization are distinct roles. Providers may bundle several of them, so the word “gateway” alone does not tell you what a company actually supplies.
For this comparison, the useful questions are whether a provider supports your sales channels and markets, which payment-flow roles it bundles, and how it handles fraud, settlement and integration. The cited product descriptions are company statements, not independent performance comparisons.

Five providers with detailed current product descriptions
Adyen
Adyen describes a single platform for accepting, processing and settling payments in more than 130 countries, spanning gateway, risk, processing and acquiring. It says it has local acquiring in key markets, offers payouts in more than 30 settlement currencies, and typically makes payouts within one or two days. Its banking infrastructure operates in the US, UK and EU, according to the company. These are vendor-described capabilities; confirm eligibility, availability and timing for your business and markets directly with Adyen. Adyen’s payments platform
Adyen reported that it processed $43 billion across nearly 200,000 transactions on Black Friday 2025 and claimed 99.9999% uptime for that event. These are company-reported figures for that specific day, not an independent comparison with other providers.
Stripe
Stripe describes support for online and in-person acceptance, prebuilt checkout interfaces, payment links, cross-border options, and fraud and payment-optimization products. Its product page states availability in 195 countries and 135-plus currencies, with local acquiring coverage in 46 markets. Coverage depends on the product and market, so verify that the features and payment methods you need are available for your business. Stripe Payments

PayPal Enterprise Payments
PayPal describes a unified enterprise platform for payment processing, acceptance, risk management and payouts. Its listed options include cards, digital wallets, PayPal, Venmo, installment payments, guest checkout and local payment methods. Enterprise pricing is custom, so the product page does not provide a standard price for comparing it with other providers. PayPal Enterprise Payments
PayPal reported 26.3 billion payment transactions and $1.68 trillion in total payment volume for 2024. Those figures describe PayPal’s overall scale; they do not establish its rank against the other companies in this shortlist.

Checkout.com
Checkout.com says one integration provides online gateway services, processing, domestic and international acquiring, and fraud detection. Its product information covers major international card schemes and examples of local cards and processing. The company presents authorization, analytics, security and market-entry benefits, but those claims are not independently normalized against competitors. Checkout.com

Two additional market-relevant names with limited comparable evidence
Fiserv
Fiserv appears among payment processors in the surfaced overview of the 2024 IDC MarketScape and in a secondary buyer guide. That establishes relevance to the broader provider landscape, but the available evidence does not establish its current end-to-end product coverage in enough detail to compare it fairly with the five profiles above. Confirm the current product, acquiring and processing boundaries with Fiserv before shortlisting it.
Rank #4

Global Payments
Global Payments appears in the secondary buyer guide as a representative vendor. The evidence available for this comparison does not establish a detailed current product profile or support a capability score against the other providers. Verify the current offering and product boundaries directly before treating it as a like-for-like alternative.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose a provider for your business
Start with your sales channels
If you sell online and in person, check that the provider supports both channels in the markets where you operate and that reporting and reconciliation work across them. Online-only businesses may place more weight on checkout integration, supported payment methods, recurring billing and cross-border processing. Platforms and marketplaces should also establish how the provider supports payouts to multiple parties.
Map the markets and payment flow you need
List the countries where you sell, the local payment methods customers expect, and the currencies in which you need to accept and settle funds. Then establish whether the provider supplies gateway, processing, acquiring or only selected parts of that flow in each market. A broad country-coverage claim does not by itself confirm local acquiring, merchant eligibility or access to every product.

- A complete countertop point of sale — Combine dual responsive touchscreens, built-in POS software, and durable hardware for a fast, reliable checkout experience.
- Serve customers faster — Run smoothly through busy shifts, complex menus, and big orders with high-speed processing, memory, and responsive touchscreen displays.
- Accept every way they pay — Take all major cards at one simple rate, with no hidden fees or long-term contracts. Receive funds as soon as the next business day.
- Handle real-world demands — Resist everyday spills, dust, and wear with a durable, IP54-rated design.
- Stay reliable through every rush — Maintain strong connectivity and consistent performance through your busiest hours.
Assess risk controls and operational fit
Compare fraud screening, dispute handling, authentication options, authorization optimization, settlement reporting and payout schedules. Ask which functions are included, which are separate products, and what configuration or integration work they require. Vendor-reported uplift or savings should not be treated as a directly comparable benchmark unless the measurement conditions are also comparable.
Get commercial terms in writing
Ask each provider for a proposal based on the same transaction mix, markets, payment methods and sales channels. Compare processing and other fees alongside settlement timing, reserves, underwriting requirements, support arrangements and contract terms. The available product descriptions do not establish normalized pricing or universal settlement conditions, so a headline feature list is not enough to determine total cost or cash-flow impact.
What this shortlist can—and cannot—tell you
The five detailed profiles describe capabilities each company says it offers; they do not establish which provider is best for a particular merchant. The two additional names are relevant to a broader market survey, but the evidence here does not support detailed, comparable product profiles for them. No independent market-share or revenue ranking is established, so “top seven” is best understood as a comparison scope, not a verified order of market leaders.
