Run OrcaSlicer’s core calibration tests in this order: Temperature → Max Volumetric Speed → Pressure Advance → Flow → Retraction. The sequence establishes material behavior first, then the printer’s usable flow limit, pressure compensation, extrusion amount, and finally travel-related stringing control.

After those five, choose the additional tests that match your problem: Cornering for sharp-corner artifacts, Input Shaping for ringing caused by vibration, VFA for resonance-related surface variation, and Tolerance when parts must fit together. Tolerance appears in the calibration section but is not part of the guide’s numbered sequence.

The recommended OrcaSlicer calibration order

OrcaSlicer’s current Calibration Guide places the main tests in a dependency-aware sequence. Changing an upstream setting can alter the result of a later test, so avoid jumping straight to retraction or flow because those are the defects most visible on a quick print.

Order Official test name What it establishes Why it belongs here
1 Temperature Nozzle and bed temperatures appropriate for the filament Temperature changes viscosity, flow behavior and bed adhesion.
2 Max Volumetric Speed The filament’s usable maximum flow rate It identifies the point where demanding flow can produce under-extrusion.
3 Pressure Advance Compensation for pressure changes inside the nozzle It addresses pressure-related artifacts before you judge final extrusion amount.
4 Flow The amount of filament actually extruded It affects dimensional accuracy and layer adhesion, using the earlier settings as a foundation.
5 Retraction Retraction length that limits stringing and oozing OrcaSlicer recommends tuning it after pressure advance and flow are established.
Additional Cornering, Input Shaping, VFA Corner artifacts, vibration ringing and resonance speeds Use these when the corresponding mechanical or motion artifacts are present.
Goal-driven Tolerance Dimensional fit between printed parts The guide lists it separately rather than assigning it a position in the numbered sequence.

Run the core five for each materially different filament or setup. A profile calibrated for one material should not be treated as a universal profile for every spool, because the first two tests are explicitly concerned with filament behavior and flow limits.

1. Temperature: establish a stable material baseline

Start by calibrating both nozzle and bed temperatures. OrcaSlicer identifies temperature as a control for filament viscosity, flow and bed adhesion. Those properties affect every later extrusion test: a temperature that is too low can make later flow look inadequate, while excessive heat can increase oozing and blur the differences between retraction settings.

What to evaluate

  • Whether the filament lays down consistently rather than intermittently or weakly.
  • Whether layers adhere to the bed reliably at the selected bed temperature.
  • Whether the print shows excessive ooze that could be mistaken for a retraction problem.

Record the selected nozzle and bed temperatures with the filament profile. Do not change temperature while comparing the next calibration stages; otherwise, you are no longer comparing the same material conditions.

2. Max Volumetric Speed: find the flow ceiling

Maximum volumetric speed determines how much filament the printer can deliver per unit of time before high-flow moves begin to under-extrude. This is a limit for the filament-and-printer combination, not a promise that every model should be printed at that rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it precedes pressure advance and flow

If a print asks for more material than the hot end and filament can supply, no amount of pressure-advance or flow adjustment can make that demand reliable. Establishing a usable ceiling first prevents later tests from being evaluated under conditions that already exceed the material’s capacity.

How to use the result

  • Use the highest region that remains consistently extruded rather than selecting a visibly failing section.
  • Apply the result as the filament’s practical maximum volumetric speed, leaving room for normal variation if your specimen shows a gradual transition.
  • Keep this value tied to the filament profile; a different material may have a different usable ceiling.

3. Pressure Advance: control pressure-related artifacts

Pressure Advance compensates for changes in nozzle pressure as the printer accelerates, decelerates and changes direction. The goal is to reduce artifacts caused by pressure changes, such as inconsistent line width around motion transitions.

Standard and adaptive approaches

The guide also presents adaptive pressure advance as an advanced method. It is intended to optimize behavior across different speeds and geometries rather than assuming one condition represents every move. Use the advanced method only when you understand that its result is solving a broader, speed-dependent problem; it is not a reason to skip the basic calibration logic.

Keep the test isolated

Use the temperature and maximum-volumetric-speed decisions already established. If you change those while judging pressure advance, a pressure artifact may actually be a viscosity or flow-ceiling artifact. Complete this stage before fine-tuning the amount of filament in the flow test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Flow: set the extrusion amount

Flow calibration adjusts how much filament the printer extrudes. OrcaSlicer associates it with dimensional accuracy and layer adhesion, so it is the stage to use when walls measure incorrectly or layers do not bond as expected even though temperature and speed are appropriate.

Interpreting the result

  • Prefer the setting that produces the intended extrusion without visibly overfilled or starved surfaces.
  • Check the result against the practical requirement: dimensional parts need predictable size, while structural prints also need dependable layer bonding.
  • Do not use flow to compensate for a maximum-volumetric-speed failure. If high-speed sections are under-extruded, lower the speed ceiling rather than inflating flow indiscriminately.

Once selected, keep the flow value fixed while testing retraction. Retraction comparisons are meaningful only when the amount of material being deposited is already established.

5. Retraction: reduce stringing and oozing last

Retraction pulls filament back during travel moves to limit pressure-driven oozing. OrcaSlicer places it after pressure advance and flow because both settings influence the amount of material remaining under pressure at the end of a line.

How to read the retraction tower

The retraction test prints a tower whose sections use different retraction lengths. Inspect the sections and choose the shortest setting that produces the cleanest result. The shortest clean setting is preferable to a larger value that merely masks stringing by adding unnecessary filament movement.

Use the Calib_Retraction_tower comment in the G-code preview to map each tower section to its retraction length. The page warns that a visible ; retract command may not show the full effective amount because the retract-before-wipe setting can contribute to the total movement.

Documented starting ranges

Extruder arrangement Example starting range Increment Qualification
Most direct-drive extruders 0–2 mm 0.1 mm Documentation examples, not universal values.
Bowden extruders 1–6 mm 0.2 mm Documentation examples, not universal values.

These ranges are starting points, not specifications. Extruder geometry, filament behavior and the rest of the extrusion profile determine the useful value.

When more retraction is the wrong fix

For a low-oozing material, a tower that is clean from the beginning may need only about 0.2–0.4 mm. If stringing remains heavy, dry the filament and check that the nozzle is installed correctly and is not leaking before simply increasing retraction. Moisture or a nozzle leak can create stringing that retraction cannot reliably solve.

Optional calibration tests: run them for a reason

The guide lists three additional motion-related tests and a separate tolerance calibration. They are not mandatory steps for every print profile. Select them according to the defect or dimensional requirement you are trying to address.

Cornering (Jerk or Junction Deviation)

Use cornering calibration when artifacts cluster around sharp corners or abrupt direction changes. It addresses how the printer transitions through those changes, rather than how much filament is extruded. Run it after the core extrusion settings when corner-specific defects remain.

Input Shaping

Input shaping is an advanced calibration for ringing caused by mechanical vibration. If repeating echoes appear after sharp features, the issue may be motion-system resonance rather than temperature, flow or retraction. Input shaping compensates for that vibration instead of trying to correct it with extrusion settings.

VFA

The VFA speed test is used to find resonance speeds associated with variable-frequency artifacts. It is useful when surface bands or repeating patterns change with speed and do not respond to the core material calibrations.

Tolerance

Tolerance calibration checks dimensional fit. Use it when a printed pin, hole, sliding joint or other mating feature must fit a companion part. Because the current guide does not place tolerance in its numbered sequence, treat it as a goal-driven check rather than inserting it between two official steps. It is most informative after the extrusion-related values you intend to use for the part have been stabilized.

A practical calibration workflow

  1. Choose the exact filament and printer configuration. Keep the material, nozzle setup and extruder arrangement unchanged while running the sequence.
  2. Run Temperature. Set nozzle and bed temperatures that provide consistent flow and adhesion.
  3. Run Max Volumetric Speed. Identify the usable high-flow limit and record it in the filament profile.
  4. Run Pressure Advance. Tune pressure compensation with the earlier temperature and speed decisions fixed. Consider adaptive pressure advance only as the advanced option described by the guide.
  5. Run Flow. Set the extrusion amount for the dimensional and layer-adhesion behavior you need.
  6. Run Retraction. Compare tower sections, map them with Calib_Retraction_tower, and choose the shortest clean result.
  7. Add only the relevant optional tests. Choose cornering, input shaping or VFA for motion artifacts, and tolerance for mating dimensions.
  8. Save the profile deliberately. Record the filament, temperatures, maximum volumetric speed, pressure-advance value, flow and retraction settings together so a later change can be traced.
  9. Exit calibration mode correctly. OrcaSlicer’s official instruction is: “After completing the calibration process, remember to create a new project in order to exit the calibration mode.”

Choose the next test by symptom

Observed problem First calibration to consider Check before changing the value
Poor bed adhesion or inconsistent material behavior Temperature Both nozzle and bed temperature are part of the calibration.
Under-extrusion only during fast, high-flow moves Max Volumetric Speed The requested flow may exceed the filament’s usable ceiling.
Artifacts at acceleration or direction changes Pressure Advance Keep temperature and the flow ceiling fixed while comparing results.
Incorrect wall size or weak layer bonding at normal flow Flow Do not use flow to hide a high-speed volumetric limit.
Stringing between separate features Retraction Check filament dryness and nozzle leaks before increasing retraction.
Defects concentrated at sharp corners Cornering This is a motion-transition issue, not automatically an extrusion issue.
Repeating echoes after sharp features Input Shaping Look for vibration-related ringing that persists after extrusion tuning.
Speed-dependent repeating surface bands VFA Use the speed test to identify resonance speeds.
Parts do not mate or slide as intended Tolerance Run a dimensional-fit check using the stabilized extrusion profile.

Common mistakes that make calibration misleading

  • Changing several variables at once: If temperature, flow and retraction all change between specimens, you cannot identify which setting caused the improvement.
  • Tuning retraction before flow and pressure advance: The official sequence deliberately places retraction last among the core tests.
  • Treating example retraction ranges as rules: The documented direct-drive and Bowden ranges are starting ranges, not universal targets.
  • Using retraction to hide a hardware or material problem: Dry wet filament and inspect the nozzle installation for leaks first when stringing remains severe.
  • Ignoring the G-code mapping: Read the Calib_Retraction_tower comment rather than assuming the visible ; retract value represents the complete effective retraction.
  • Running every optional test automatically: Cornering, input shaping, VFA and tolerance answer different questions. Run the one connected to the defect or fit requirement.
  • Forgetting calibration mode: Create a new project after finishing, as OrcaSlicer’s guide instructs.
