The best place to sell an online course depends on whether you need a marketplace to help buyers discover it, a branded course site you control, or an all-in-one platform that also handles marketing and community. There is no verified universal winner among these 15 options: the available comparisons are vendor-authored, not independent hands-on tests. Use the list to narrow the model that fits your audience, teaching format and workflow, then confirm current plan terms directly with the platform.

Choose a platform model before comparing features

Start by deciding how customers will find and buy your course. A marketplace can put courses in a discovery environment, but its revenue model and control differ from running your own branded school. Hosted course software gives you more ownership of the customer journey, but you generally have to bring the audience. All-in-one creator platforms aim to combine course delivery with tools such as email, sales pages or community.

Model Best fit Main trade-off
Course marketplace Creators seeking marketplace discovery, particularly when they do not yet have a large audience. Revenue share and marketplace rules can affect earnings and control.
Hosted course platform Creators who want a branded school and can attract buyers through their own channels. Subscription and payment costs sit alongside the work of marketing the course.
All-in-one creator platform Businesses that want course delivery and marketing or community tools in one system. Check whether the bundled tools fit your needs and what plan limits apply.

These model distinctions are described in a current platform comparison from Teachable, a course-platform vendor: Teachable’s comparison of online course platforms. They are useful selection criteria, not independent performance findings.

Compare the complete workflow, not just the monthly price

A course platform is part of a business workflow. List the capabilities you need before evaluating plans, and assess the cost at your expected volume rather than relying on a headline starting price. Vendor comparisons in this set publish inconsistent figures, and terms can change; this article does not present an independently verified price ranking.

  • Work efficiently by using Bookmarks and tools like Effect Chain, which allow you to apply multiple effects at a time

  • Sales and marketing: Decide whether you need landing pages, checkout, email, funnels, upsells, memberships, coaching or affiliate tools.
  • Community and engagement: Determine whether discussion is central to your course, built into the platform or dependent on an integration.
  • Access and control: Review custom domains, branding, student data, mobile access, integrations and support.
  • Total cost and capacity: Confirm subscription billing frequency, platform and payment fees, product, student or contact limits, taxes, app charges and required third-party services.

Format matters, too. A self-paced video course needs dependable lesson delivery and progress tools; a cohort course needs a way to coordinate live sessions and engagement; a blended course may need both. Thinkific’s guide describes asynchronous, scheduled, cohort and live-course formats, while LearnWorlds’ comparison discusses interactive video and assessments. These are vendor descriptions, not independent evaluations: Thinkific’s guide to online course platforms and LearnWorlds’ platform comparison.

Match the shortlist to your course business

  • You need discovery: Investigate marketplace options such as Udemy, Skillshare or Maven, and scrutinize how discovery, control and revenue work for creators.
  • You already have an audience and want a branded school: Focus on hosted course platforms and check custom-domain, branding, student-management and integration requirements.
  • You want marketing tools with course delivery: Compare the bundles described by Kajabi and Podia with what you currently use, including any tools that would remain separate.
  • Your course depends on interaction: Compare community-oriented positioning from Mighty Networks with the assessment and interactive-learning features described by LearnWorlds.
  • You teach cohorts or live sessions: Prioritize event scheduling, live delivery and student engagement; confirm current plan availability rather than assuming a listed feature is included.
  • You want a WordPress-centered site: Evaluate LearnDash in the context of the WordPress setup and integrations you will maintain.

How to verify the real cost before choosing

  1. Set your scenario: Estimate expected course sales, student count, products, contacts, payment methods and required integrations.
  2. Compare the same billing basis: Check each official pricing page for the plan name and whether the quoted rate is monthly or tied to annual billing.
  3. Calculate variable charges: Add applicable platform and payment fees to the subscription. Do not assume marketplace revenue share and hosted-platform fees work the same way.
  4. Check limits and add-ons: Confirm product, student and contact caps, as well as costs for apps, community tools or integrations you need.
  5. Validate regional terms: Verify tax and payment handling, availability and fees for your country and account type with the platform.
  6. Recheck before launch: Pricing, features and limits change; use the current official terms when you are ready to publish or migrate.

Vendor-published prices can conflict across comparison articles, so an old or cross-platform table is not a dependable substitute for the current plan page. For example, Teachable publishes its own figures for its plans and a break-even calculation, but those figures are its claims, not an independent validation. See Teachable’s comparison.

What the available comparisons can—and cannot—tell you

The 2026 roundups considered here are vendor-authored or hosted by platform vendors. They can help identify product positioning and questions to investigate, but they do not establish a neutral winner, independently tested performance or typical creator earnings. Treat feature, payment, tax, app and price claims as vendor statements, and verify them against current official documentation for your region and plan.
