Start with Auto select if your OnePlus phone offers it. It is the least disruptive way to let the phone balance motion smoothness and power use. If you want longer runtime, choose Standard. If you want the smoothest scrolling and touch response, choose High, then use App-specific refresh rate where available so only useful apps receive the higher setting. OnePlus documents the trade-off clearly: higher refresh rates look and feel smoother but consume battery faster, while Standard is intended for everyday use with better battery-life performance.
The settings to try first
OnePlus refresh-rate controls normally present three choices: Auto select, Standard and High. Their names describe the decision more reliably than any universal battery percentage, because OnePlus does not publish one percentage that applies to every model, display panel, processor or software version.

If your phone shows App-specific refresh rate after you select High, that is the most precise compromise: retain High only for apps where motion feels meaningfully better and select a lower option for apps where it does not.

Refresh rate is how often the display can update its image, expressed in hertz (Hz). A higher rate can make scrolling, transitions and touch-driven movement appear more continuous because the screen is capable of updating more frequently. OnePlus describes this as “a smoother image quality and control.” That description concerns perceived motion and interaction, not a promise that every application will render at the panel’s maximum rate.

The cost is power. More frequent display updates can increase energy use, so OnePlus says higher refresh rates drain the battery faster. The documentation gives the direction of the trade-off but no controlled, model-by-model battery test and no universal percentage saved by Standard. Treat any exact percentage found elsewhere as a result for a particular phone and test condition, not as a rule for all OnePlus devices.
Check your model before changing anything
Menu names and available features vary by device and software version. The path below comes from the OxygenOS 14.0 User Manual, but your phone may place the control elsewhere or offer fewer choices. OnePlus explicitly cautions that features can vary across different models and versions.
- Open Settings and use the search box for refresh rate if the menu path does not match.
- Confirm the exact model and OxygenOS version under the phone’s About device screen before comparing instructions from another model.
- Do not assume that a rate listed in one Nord or flagship manual exists on every OnePlus phone.
The current OxygenOS 16 US software page provides general software context, but it does not establish that every current model has identical refresh-rate controls. Your handset’s own settings and manual take priority.
How to change the general refresh-rate mode
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display & brightness.
- Tap Screen refresh rate.
- Choose Auto select, Standard or High, depending on the choices shown on your device.
- Use the phone normally for a few minutes, especially in the apps where you notice judder or battery loss. The menu changes the display behavior immediately; it does not require a separate calibration step.
If your labels differ, do not force the procedure. Search Settings for “refresh rate” or open the model-specific manual instead. A missing option may reflect the phone’s hardware or software rather than a fault.
When Auto select is the right answer
Auto select is the sensible first setting for most owners who want a smoother phone but do not want to manage every application. It allows the device to make the selection rather than locking the panel to the highest available mode. OxygenOS 14 lists Auto select, but the manual does not explain its exact switching rules or promise a particular battery outcome.

That limitation matters: Auto select is a practical middle-ground recommendation, not a laboratory guarantee. If your phone still feels less fluid than you want, move to High and test the apps that matter to you. If runtime becomes more important, move to Standard. Make the change based on your own use rather than an assumed savings figure.
When Standard is the better choice
Choose Standard when battery endurance matters more than the extra smoothness. OnePlus states that a standard refresh rate is more than capable of handling everyday use with better battery-life performance. This is especially reasonable if you mostly read static pages, write messages, check email or use apps where scrolling speed is not important to you.

Standard does not mean the phone is malfunctioning or that animations are disabled. It simply gives up the higher-rate behavior in exchange for the lower-power mode described by OnePlus. If the difference is difficult for you to see, Standard avoids paying the higher-rate power cost for a benefit you are not using.
When High is worth trying
High is the setting to test when scrolling, animation or touch control feels noticeably better at a faster rate. OnePlus says a higher refresh rate gives smoother image quality and control. The benefit is most relevant in motion-heavy interaction: rapidly scrolling a long page, moving through a responsive interface or playing software that can take advantage of faster updates.
High is not a guarantee that every app will run at the display’s maximum. The Android 12 system introduction from OnePlus notes that some apps may be limited to 60 Hz for compatibility. Video content can also have a frame rate below the panel’s maximum, so selecting High cannot create extra frames in content that does not provide them.

Use High because you can identify a real improvement, not simply because the number is larger. If the phone feels the same in an app, that app is a good candidate for a lower per-app setting.
Using App-specific refresh rate
On phones that expose the control, select High first and then look for App-specific refresh rate. The exact screen and choices depend on the model. A Nord CE4 Lite manual documents 60, 90 and 120 Hz choices, but those values must not be treated as universal OnePlus options.
- Go to Settings > Display & brightness > Screen refresh rate.
- Select High.
- Open App-specific refresh rate if it appears.
- Review the listed applications and assign a higher rate only where smoother motion is useful to you.
- Assign a lower available rate to apps that are mostly static, already limited by compatibility or do not look different at High.
- Return to the app and scroll or interact long enough to judge the change before adjusting another app.
This approach is an editorial use of the control’s purpose, not a published battery test. It reduces the time that high-rate behavior is selected for apps where you gain little, while preserving it where you notice the benefit.
How compatibility limits affect what you see
A refresh-rate choice is a ceiling or operating preference, not a command that every application must obey. OnePlus’s Android 12 guide says some apps support only 60 Hz because of compatibility. In those apps, choosing High may not produce a visible change. The display can still be capable of a higher rate while the application remains constrained.
Check the result in the app itself. Compare a long, continuous scroll or an animation rather than judging from the settings label alone. If two modes look identical, leave that app at the lower available choice and reserve High for software that responds visibly.

Practical profiles for common priorities
Balanced everyday use
Set Auto select. Keep it as your baseline if you want a simple setting and are satisfied with both the phone’s feel and its runtime. Because OnePlus does not publish Auto select’s exact decision rules, evaluate the result on your own device.
Longest practical runtime
Set Standard. This follows OnePlus’s stated battery-life positioning for the standard mode. If you later discover that a particular activity genuinely benefits from more fluid motion, consider High with per-app controls rather than changing the entire phone permanently.
Smoothness where it matters
Set High and configure App-specific refresh rate when available. Keep a faster choice for frequently scrolled or highly interactive apps where you can see the improvement. Use a lower choice for apps that are static, compatibility-limited or visually unchanged.
Testing a suspected problem
Switch temporarily between Auto select and Standard, then between Standard and High, while repeating the same action in the same app. This isolates the refresh-rate setting from changes in network speed, content or workload. Do not convert a short impression into a universal battery claim; the official documentation does not provide a percentage for these comparisons.

The Screen refresh rate menu is missing
Search Settings for refresh rate and verify the OxygenOS version. If no result appears, consult the manual for the exact model. The feature may differ by model or version, and a phone that does not expose the control cannot be made to show it through a different menu path.

High is selected but an app still looks like 60 Hz
That may be normal. OnePlus documents compatibility limits in which some apps support only 60 Hz. Test another application that contains continuous scrolling; if the second app is also limited, check the app-specific panel and your model documentation before assuming the display is defective.
Battery life falls after choosing High
The change is consistent with OnePlus’s warning that higher refresh rates drain the battery faster. Return to Auto select or Standard, or lower the setting for individual apps if your phone provides that control. There is no official universal savings percentage to use as a target.
The options differ from another OnePlus tutorial
Use your phone’s labels and model manual. A documented 60/90/120 Hz menu on one model does not establish that every OnePlus phone offers those same rates. Software updates can also change the presentation of the setting.

A decision checklist
- Do you clearly notice smoother scrolling or control at High?
- Does that improvement occur in the apps you use most, or only in a brief test?
- Does your phone provide App-specific refresh rate?
- Are any target apps limited to 60 Hz for compatibility?
- Is longer runtime more valuable than the smoother feel?
- Have you checked the exact model and OxygenOS version rather than borrowing another phone’s menu instructions?
If the answer to the last question is no, verify the model first. If the answer to the runtime question is yes, choose Standard. If smoothness matters but only in selected apps, use High with per-app choices. Otherwise, begin with Auto select and adjust only when your own use reveals a reason.
