The best OnePlus tune-up is to match each setting to your priority: use Auto select refresh rate for a balance of smoothness and battery, lower screen resolution only when you need extra endurance, inspect Battery usage details before restricting apps, and reserve High performance mode for demanding games. Menu names and availability differ by model and OxygenOS release, so search your Settings app or check the manual for your exact phone. The paths below follow the OxygenOS 14.0 User Manual, with version-specific notes from the OnePlus 10 Pro OxygenOS 12 manual.
Start with the changes that affect daily use most
Display, battery and performance controls are trade-offs rather than universal upgrades. A faster refresh rate makes motion look smoother but can drain the battery more quickly. A higher resolution makes fine detail sharper while using more power. Restricting an app may reduce background consumption, yet it can also delay notifications or break foreground functions. High performance mode can help a graphics-intensive game, but OnePlus warns that it may increase power consumption and heat.
Change one setting at a time, use the phone normally for a day, and then decide whether the trade-off is worthwhile. OxygenOS 14 documentation describes qualitative effects; it does not provide a battery-life percentage or a benchmark that applies to every OnePlus model.

How to choose a screen refresh rate
Open the refresh-rate control
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display & brightness.
- Tap Screen refresh rate.
- Choose Auto select, Standard, or High, if those choices are present.
OnePlus describes higher refresh rates as smoother and potentially useful for gaming, with faster battery drain as the cost. Its manual says a standard refresh rate is sufficient for everyday use with better battery performance. Auto select is the sensible starting point when you want the system to balance responsiveness and endurance.

Use app-specific rates only when available
On supported phones, selecting High can reveal App-specific refresh rate controls. The manual lists 60 Hz, 90 Hz and 120 Hz choices for individual apps, but those exact values are not guaranteed on every device. Assign a lower rate to apps where smoothness is unimportant and keep a higher rate for games or interfaces that benefit from it. If your phone does not show this submenu, it is not available in that model or software build.
Should you lower screen resolution?
Find the resolution setting
- Go to Settings > Display & brightness.
- Tap Screen resolution, if your model provides it.
- Choose the higher setting for maximum sharpness or the lower setting for reduced power use.
OnePlus says a higher resolution produces a sharper image. Lowering it reduces display quality but uses less power. Resolution selection exists only on some OnePlus phones, so the absence of this menu is normal. Text, photos and fine interface details are the places where you are most likely to notice the change; judge the result at your usual viewing distance before keeping the lower setting.
Which brightness and color controls are worth changing?
Brightness and automatic brightness
In Settings > Display & brightness, use the brightness slider for immediate control or enable Auto brightness if you move between different lighting conditions. A lower comfortable brightness generally demands less power than a very bright screen, but the manual does not establish a fixed saving percentage. Avoid treating a dim screen that is hard to read as an optimization.

Screen color and Nature Tone Display
Depending on the model, the same area includes Vivid, Natural or Pro screen-color modes, plus Nature Tone Display. These are appearance and comfort preferences. Vivid emphasizes stronger color; Natural or a Pro profile may look more restrained. Nature Tone Display adapts the appearance to surrounding light on supported devices. The documentation does not establish a medical benefit, so choose the mode that looks comfortable and accurate to you.
Dark mode and Eye Comfort
Dark mode and Eye Comfort are also display preferences. Dark mode changes the interface palette, while Eye Comfort changes the screen’s color characteristics. Enable them for your preference or evening readability, but do not expect a guaranteed battery percentage or a clinical health outcome from either feature; the official manuals provide no such measurement.
Do video enhancements justify their extra power use?
Image sharpener and Video Color Boost
OxygenOS lists Image sharpener and Video Color Boost among display options on supported models. OnePlus explicitly warns that both increase power consumption. Leave them off when battery life is the priority, then test them with the video services or content you actually watch. If the visual difference is small on your screen, the additional power draw is difficult to justify.

HDR and the OxygenOS 12 OnePlus 10 Pro note
The OxygenOS 12 manual for the OnePlus 10 Pro says video color enhancement increases battery usage and that a brighter HDR video mode consumes more power and can heat the phone. That is a version- and model-specific warning, not proof that every current OnePlus behaves identically. If your phone offers an HDR brightness or enhancement toggle, disable it when the handset becomes warm or when endurance matters more than maximum highlight brightness.

Check the last 24 hours of usage
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery.
- Open Battery usage details.
- Review the recent app list and consumption for the last 24 hours.
This view helps distinguish a genuinely active app from a general display or signal-related drain. Look for an app whose use is unusually high compared with how often you opened it. Update or troubleshoot that app first; immediately restricting every background process can create notification and reliability problems without identifying the cause.
Which OnePlus battery settings should you enable?
Power saving mode
- Go to Settings > Battery > Power saving mode.
- Turn it on when you need a low-battery extension.
- If offered, set an automatic activation battery level.
- Review the default optimizations and adjust them only when you understand the effect.
OxygenOS 14 documents automatic exit at 90 percent when that option is selected. Power saving mode is an on-demand response to low charge, not a replacement for diagnosing an unusually active app. Its restrictions can reduce background work and change how promptly some tasks run.

Smart charging
- Open Settings > Battery > Battery health.
- Tap Smart charging.
- Enable it if your model and software expose the control.
Smart charging learns charging habits. In the manual’s overnight example, the phone pauses charging at 80 percent and resumes later so it reaches 100 percent near wake-up time. That behavior depends on the phone learning a routine; availability and implementation vary by model and OxygenOS version.
Sleep standby optimization
- Go to Settings > Battery > More settings.
- Find Sleep standby optimization.
- Enable it only if less frequent overnight notifications are acceptable.
OnePlus describes this feature as entering a low-power state while you sleep and reducing push-notification frequency. People waiting for immediate overnight alerts, calls or messages should leave it off or verify that their critical apps still notify in time.
App battery management
- Open Settings > Battery > More settings > App battery management.
- Select the app that appeared unusually active in Battery usage details.
- Choose a more restrictive policy only when delayed work is acceptable.
OnePlus warns that disabling foreground activity can prevent an app from working properly and delay notifications. Messaging, navigation, authentication and work apps are poor candidates for aggressive restrictions. Apply a restriction to a nonessential app, then test its notifications and background behavior before changing anything else.

Should you turn on High performance mode?
Enable it for a specific demanding game
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery > More settings.
- Tap High performance mode.
- Turn it on only for a graphics-intensive task that benefits from additional performance.
OnePlus’s warning is explicit: “It may increase power consumption and cause your phone to heat up. Turn on this feature only when necessary.” It is therefore not a battery-saving switch and should not be left enabled as a default. Turn it back off after the demanding session, especially if the phone is warm.
Use Game Assistant’s low-power option when endurance matters
The OxygenOS manual describes game-specific performance modes in Game Assistant. Its low-power mode limits hardware performance and reduces graphics quality to extend battery life. Menu names and available modes vary, so open Game Assistant from a supported game and select the mode that matches your priority: higher frame-rate consistency, balanced behavior, or longer play time. Do not assume a mode shown in an online guide exists on your handset.

A safe order for tuning your phone
- Set refresh rate to Auto select and keep your current resolution.
- Review Battery usage details for the last 24 hours.
- Restrict only an app that is clearly overactive and nonessential, then test notifications.
- Turn on Smart charging if available and useful for your charging routine.
- Use Power saving mode when charge is low, rather than running every restriction permanently.
- Try display enhancements only when their visual improvement is obvious to you.
- Use High performance mode for a defined gaming session, then switch it off.
If a path is missing, a label differs, or an option has fewer choices, consult the model’s manual and the OnePlus Global Support portal for the applicable documentation and software information. OxygenOS 14 is the reference version for these paths; later releases and other models can reorganize menus or omit features.
The Bottom Line
For most owners, start with Auto select refresh rate, keep the sharper resolution unless battery life is tight, leave power-hungry video enhancements off unless you value their effect, inspect Battery usage details before restricting apps, and reserve High performance mode for games that genuinely need it.
