After a Galaxy update, do not reset every setting pre-emptively. First identify the installed One UI and Android version, read Samsung’s update notes, then check only the areas connected to a real change: notification panels, app alerts and permissions, battery use, and app or system updates. Samsung states that available features and functions can vary by device, carrier, network, country and software version, so a menu shown on one Galaxy may not exist on another.

The checklist below is designed for an owner who has just installed an update and wants to restore a familiar setup without weakening privacy, battery life or app compatibility.

1. Confirm exactly what installed before changing settings

An update can change the interface, add a setting, or fix a problem without resetting your personal choices. Knowing the model and software build prevents you from applying instructions for a different Galaxy.

Read the update notes

  1. Open Settings > Software update.
  2. Open Last update, Software update history, or the equivalent entry shown on your phone. Samsung’s label differs by model and software version.
  3. Read the “What’s new” information in the update screen. On One UI 7 devices, also check the setup wizard and the phone’s User Manual or Tips and Help area for “What’s new in One UI 7.”

Verify the version and model

Go to Settings > About phone > Software information. Record the One UI version, Android version and build number. The model name and model number appear in About phone as well. Keep these details when searching Samsung’s support pages or asking for help; “Galaxy” alone is not specific enough to identify the correct menu.

Do not assume that an update released for one country, carrier or Galaxy generation has the same options elsewhere. If a setting described below is missing, check the update notes and your device manual before treating that absence as a fault.

2. Relearn notification and Quick settings navigation in One UI 7

One UI 7 changes the way the top edge is divided on supported devices. Notifications and Quick settings open from different areas instead of always appearing in one combined shade.

Open each panel

  • Notifications: swipe down from the top-left or top-center area.
  • Quick settings: swipe down from the top-right area.

A swipe that begins in the wrong area can make the phone appear to have lost notifications or toggles when the panel has simply changed. Practice both starting points from the home screen and from inside an app.

Combine the panels if you prefer the old workflow

Samsung’s One UI 7 instructions provide an optional combined view:

  1. Swipe down from the top right to open Quick settings.
  2. Tap Edit (the pencil icon).
  3. Tap Panel settings.
  4. Under Notification and quick settings view, choose Together.
  5. Tap Back, then Done.

The combined-view option is a One UI 7 behavior and may not appear on every model or regional software build. If you do not see it, use the separate swipe zones supplied by your phone rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings.

3. Restore individual app alerts without opening unnecessary access

If one messaging, calendar, banking or media app stopped alerting after the update, inspect that app first. Changing notification and permission settings for every app can create unwanted alerts or grant access that an app does not need.

Check an app’s notification controls

  1. Open Settings > Apps.
  2. Select the app that has a problem.
  3. Tap Notifications.
  4. Confirm that notifications are allowed and review the categories shown for that app.

Notification categories are app-specific, so two apps will not necessarily expose the same switches. An app may separate direct messages, calls, promotions, silent alerts or background activity into different categories. Enable only the categories you actually need and check whether the category is set to silent rather than fully blocked.

Review permissions by type

  1. Open Settings > Apps.
  2. Tap the three-dot menu.
  3. Choose Permission manager.
  4. Select a permission type, then select the app to review or change its access.

Use a concrete symptom to guide the change: a navigation app may need location, a camera app may need camera access, and a voice or messaging app may need microphone access. Samsung warns that denying a permission can prevent an expected function from working. If an app still works without a permission, leaving that access denied can be the more privacy-preserving choice; if a core feature fails, restore only the permission required for that feature.

4. Investigate battery draining fast before enabling aggressive restrictions

Battery behavior can look different immediately after a major software update, but there is no universal setting that guarantees a longer runtime on every Galaxy. Start by finding the consumer rather than disabling services at random.

Identify the apps and activity using power

Open the phone’s battery settings and inspect the usage list for apps with unusually high background consumption. Menu names and the exact location of the list vary by One UI version, so use the battery section’s usage or app-activity view shown on your device.

  • Look for an app that continues using power when you have not opened it.
  • Check whether a navigation, streaming, social, backup or synchronization app is active in the background.
  • Compare the timing of the battery change with the update and with any newly installed app.

Make targeted changes

For an identified background-heavy app, review its background activity controls and notification behavior. If location is involved, review the app’s location permission and the phone’s location services rather than turning off location globally without considering navigation, emergency or device-finding functions. Samsung recommends adjusting relevant background-app and location settings after checking which process is consuming power.

Power-saving changes can affect performance, synchronization or notification timing. Apply them to the app or service that explains the drain, then observe the result. Do not promise a fixed percentage improvement: battery capacity, signal strength, screen use, app behavior and model all influence the outcome.

5. Troubleshoot apps that freeze or crash in a safe order

If an app crashes after One UI changes, work from reversible checks to consequential ones. An app written for an older Android version may not behave correctly on a newer system, so an update from its publisher is often more useful than repeatedly changing phone-wide settings.

  1. Install the app’s current update. Check the app’s listing in the Google Play Store and, when applicable, the Galaxy Store. If no compatible update exists, the publisher may not yet support the newer Android version.
  2. Recheck permissions. Use Settings > Apps > [the app] > Permissions or the Permission manager path above. Restore only access required by the feature that fails.
  3. Restart the Galaxy. A restart clears a temporary process problem without deleting your app data.
  4. Run Device care. Open Settings > Device care and tap Optimize now when that control is available. This is a general cleanup and diagnostic step, not a guarantee that an incompatible app will be fixed.
  5. Use Safe mode to isolate downloaded apps. Safe mode starts the phone with downloaded apps disabled. If the problem disappears there, a downloaded app is a likely contributor; remove or update recently changed apps after returning to normal mode.
  6. Clear app data or reinstall only after the earlier checks. Clearing data signs the app out and can remove locally stored content. Reinstalling can also remove local data unless the app synchronizes it to an account or backup.
  7. Reserve a factory reset for a last resort. A reset erases personal data and settings. Back up important photos, messages, authenticator information and other data before proceeding, and make sure you know the account credentials needed to set the phone up again.

These steps are deliberately graduated: updating, checking access and restarting are low-risk; clearing data, reinstalling and resetting have increasing consequences.

6. Check for a follow-up system update

Samsung commonly publishes additional updates after a major One UI release to deliver security patches, fixes or corrections for issues discovered during rollout. If notification behavior, battery use or app stability remains abnormal after the checks above, look for a newer system package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > Software update (or System updates on some models).
  2. Tap Download and install or the equivalent check-for-update control.
  3. Install an available update when the phone has sufficient battery and a reliable connection, following the on-screen restart instructions.

Samsung also documents computer-assisted updating with Smart Switch for Windows or Mac when a compatible update is offered. Use that route only if the phone’s normal updater cannot complete and the computer meets Samsung’s requirements.

7. Choose settings by the problem you are actually seeing

Observed outcome First area to inspect Decision to make
Notifications and toggles seem to have moved One UI 7 panel navigation Use separate left/center and right swipes, or select Together in Panel settings if the option exists.
One app stopped alerting Settings > Apps > app > Notifications Enable only the needed notification categories and check whether they are silent or blocked.
An app feature no longer works Permission manager Allow the specific permission required for that feature; do not grant unrelated access.
Battery falls faster than before Battery usage and background activity Identify the consuming app first, then adjust its background or location behavior.
An app freezes or crashes Store update, permissions, restart, Device care and Safe mode Escalate from reversible checks to data clearing, reinstalling and finally a backed-up factory reset.
The problem persists after troubleshooting Software update Check for a follow-up patch; major One UI releases can receive corrective updates.

8. What not to assume after a Galaxy update

  • Not every update resets settings. A changed screen or behavior may reflect a new default, a relocated control or an app update rather than a wholesale reset.
  • Not every Galaxy has the same menu. Model, country, carrier, network and software version can change both the available feature and its label.
  • Do not disable important services to chase a battery number. Broad changes can interfere with location, synchronization, security or timely notifications.
  • Do not change permissions indiscriminately. Review the app connected to the symptom and understand what its denied access affects.
  • Do not factory-reset before making a backup. A reset is a data-erasing recovery step, not a routine post-update adjustment.

Use the installed version, the update notes and the phone’s own manual as the authority for your specific Galaxy. The practical goal is a targeted adjustment: restore the notification workflow you want, preserve app functions with the least necessary access, identify the actual source of battery use, and apply increasingly powerful troubleshooting only when the simpler step has failed.
