For most viewers, the best starting point is to leave the TV’s screen saver and pixel shift enabled, then turn on low or default logo dimming if you regularly watch channels or play games with fixed graphics. Keep brightness comfortable for the room rather than following a universal number, avoid leaving bright static images paused for long stretches, and let the TV run its built-in panel compensation. These protections can reduce avoidable wear without imposing a blanket dim picture.
Menu names, defaults, and availability vary by model, region, and firmware. Use your TV’s manual or manufacturer support page to confirm the exact control before changing it.
What settings make the biggest difference?
Start with protections that act only when they are needed or make changes that are difficult to notice in ordinary viewing. Screen savers limit how long a still image remains on screen; pixel or screen shift moves the image slightly over time; and logo dimming reduces the brightness of detected fixed graphics. Each addresses a different part of the risk, so enabling one does not make the others unnecessary.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Leave the screen saver enabled. It helps prevent a paused picture or idle screen from staying bright and static indefinitely.
- Leave pixel shift or screen shift enabled. It makes small image movements intended to spread the effect of static elements across pixels.
- Enable low or default logo dimming if your normal viewing includes persistent channel logos, captions, or game HUDs.
- Use a comfortable, room-appropriate brightness. Avoid unnecessarily high output during long sessions dominated by fixed graphics, but do not assume one numeric cap suits every TV, room, and type of content.
- Let automatic panel compensation run. Do not turn routine manual pixel-refresh cycles into a frequent maintenance ritual.
These are ways to reduce risk, not guarantees against burn-in. The relevant question is not simply whether an OLED TV can develop uneven wear—it can—but how your content, viewing habits, brightness, and the TV’s protections combine over time.

Burn-in and temporary image retention are different
Temporary image retention is a short-lived ghost of a previous image that may fade after the content changes. Burn-in is longer-lasting uneven wear: a trace of a fixed graphic can remain visible over other pictures. It is more useful to distinguish these outcomes than to treat every faint afterimage as permanent damage.
LG’s US support guidance, updated June 26, 2026, identifies channel logos, paused games, vivid mode, and very high brightness used over extended periods as risk factors. The pattern matters: a bright graphic that stays in the same place for long viewing sessions presents a different exposure from varied content that changes across the screen. That does not mean one channel or a gaming session inevitably causes damage; it means reducing prolonged, repeated static exposure is a sensible precaution.
Room brightness and picture preference matter too. Turning down the entire TV can reduce the intensity of what reaches the panel, but it also makes every scene dimmer. A targeted control such as logo dimming can preserve most of the picture while reducing brightness in a detected area. The best adjustment depends on whether the fixed element is frequent enough to justify a visible change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow each protection affects the picture
The settings below differ in what they act on, how noticeable they can be, and whether they operate automatically. Exact behavior and menu labels depend on the TV; the descriptions are manufacturer-specific where noted.
| Setting | What it addresses | Picture or usability trade-off | How it operates |
|---|---|---|---|
| Screen saver | Idle, paused, or still-image display | May replace or interrupt the image when its trigger conditions are met | Automatic; trigger conditions vary by model and input |
| Pixel shift / screen shift | Static elements that stay in one screen position | Usually subtle; edges can move beyond the screen border | Automatic, with small image movement over time |
| Logo detection or logo dimming | Detected fixed graphics such as logos; some controls also address captions | The affected graphic or area may appear dimmer, especially at stronger levels | Automatic detection and local dimming; labels and levels vary |
| Lower overall brightness | High output during content with substantial static imagery | The whole picture becomes less bright | Manual picture adjustment |
| Pixel refresh / panel cleaning | Panel compensation performed by the TV | Requires the TV to complete its process; a manual cycle may take a long time | Automatic cycles are available on some TVs; manual availability varies |
This comparison is about the role of each control, not a claim that all brands implement them identically. In particular, a screen saver cannot protect against a static image if that input or app does not trigger the saver, and logo detection is useful only to the extent the TV detects the graphic and its dimming behavior is acceptable to you.

Set up the protections in a low-impact order
- Find the model-specific controls. Check the TV’s settings menu and manual or support page for terms such as “Screen Saver,” “Pixel Shift,” “Screen Shift,” “Logo Detection,” “Auto Logo Brightness,” “Logo Luminance Adjustment,” “Pixel Refresh,” or “Pixel Cleaning.” Do not assume the same path or label applies to every model.
- Confirm the screen saver is enabled. Leave its built-in idle protection on. This is especially useful if you pause video, leave a still image displayed, or step away while a console or streaming device remains on.
- Enable pixel or screen shift. Unless the behavior interferes with your use, leave this protection active. It shifts the image slightly over time; Samsung notes that edges may move beyond the screen border. If a border or edge looks different, check whether shift is operating before treating the appearance as a fault.
- Start logo dimming at low or default. Turn it on if recurring logos, captions, or HUDs remain in fixed positions during your normal viewing. Watch a familiar program or game and decide whether the local brightness change is acceptable.
- Raise logo dimming only if your use warrants it. If you routinely watch bright fixed graphics for long periods, try a stronger level and judge the picture in that area. Samsung says High lowers brightness further; LG says High provides the most logo-brightness reduction. The additional protection comes with a more visible dimming trade-off.
- Choose overall brightness for the room, not a burn-in formula. Use a normal picture mode and a level that is comfortable in your ambient light. If your viewing is unusually static-heavy, lowering output somewhat is a reasonable option; there is no supported universal OLED brightness number that guarantees protection while preserving picture quality.
- Keep automatic compensation available. Let the TV complete its own cleaning or compensation cycle when it is off. Use a manual refresh only when the manufacturer recommends it for observed retention, and follow the exact model’s instructions.
When and how screen savers activate
Screen savers are automatic protections, but their trigger rules are not universal. LG says its screen saver activates after approximately two minutes when video is paused or there is no signal. Samsung describes a default screen saver that activates after two minutes on a still image or with no input. These are examples from manufacturer support guidance, not a promise that every OLED TV will behave the same way.
Samsung also lists exceptions: its screen saver may not activate for live TV, full-screen video, some external inputs, or some apps. In practice, test the behavior with the device and app you actually use. If a paused console screen remains visible instead of changing to a saver, do not assume the TV will eventually protect itself; resume or stop the content, turn off the display, or use the input device’s own idle behavior.
A saver is most helpful when the TV would otherwise show an unchanging image. It is not a reason to leave static content running indefinitely, and a brief pause is not equivalent to the long, repeated exposure associated with wear. Treat it as an automatic backstop, not as a substitute for sensible handling of a bright paused screen.
Choosing logo dimming without over-dimming the picture
Logo dimming is the most directly targeted control for a persistent bright graphic. Samsung’s Logo Detection reduces brightness only in the detected static area; its India support page, updated July 29, 2026, lists Off, Low (the default), and High. Samsung’s Hong Kong guidance describes Auto Logo Brightness as dimming logos and captions, with High dimming further. LG calls its control Logo Luminance Adjustment and offers Off, Low, and High, with High providing the strongest reduction. Names, levels, and availability may differ by model and region.
For most people who need this feature, Low or the default is the sensible first trial. It limits the change to the detected graphic rather than reducing brightness across the whole screen. If you watch a channel with a bright logo for many hours or play games with a persistent HUD, a stronger setting may be worthwhile. The cost is local: the logo, caption, or detected area can become noticeably darker, and a user who dislikes that change may prefer the lower setting.

Do not turn logo dimming up simply because the option exists. If your viewing is varied and fixed graphics are not a regular part of it, the visual change may offer little practical benefit. Conversely, a setting that is barely visible in a mixed movie may be more useful over a long sports broadcast, news channel, or game. Adjust based on the content pattern you actually watch.
Brightness: why there is no universal safe number
Reducing overall OLED brightness is a blunt but understandable response to unusually static-heavy use. It can lower panel output during long sessions with fixed graphics, but it also dims films, sports, games, and everything else. A numeric recommendation detached from a model, picture mode, room, and viewing pattern would imply more certainty than the available evidence supports.
Use a normal picture mode and set brightness to suit the room. Avoid leaving an unnecessarily high-output mode in use for long periods when most of the screen contains persistent graphics. If your current setting is comfortable and your viewing is varied, there is no evidence here that you should impose a particular cap. Targeted logo dimming and avoiding long idle displays can address specific risks without making every scene darker.
RTINGS’ 2026 comparison of OLEDs from 2020–2023 with a 2017 LG C7 used each TV at its maximum SDR brightness during CNN-only testing. At the 10,500-hour checkpoint, it found no consistent reduction in permanent retention compared with the earlier C7 test. Because the TVs were not matched for luminance output, the comparison does not isolate panel durability at equal brightness. It should not be used to derive a household brightness setting.
Pixel shift and screen shift: leave the subtle protection on
Pixel shift moves the displayed image slightly over time, so a fixed graphic does not always sit on precisely the same pixels. Samsung describes Pixel Shift as a recommended protection for static content and notes that edges can move beyond the screen border. The movement is generally subtle, and the practical trade-off is that image edges may shift or be cropped slightly.

Leave the feature enabled unless the particular model’s behavior interferes with something you need to see. A small edge movement is not evidence that the TV is failing; it is part of how the protection works. Since the feature name and menu location can change, check the model’s manual rather than following a path written for a different TV generation.
Pixel refresh and automatic panel cleaning
Panel compensation is maintenance the TV can perform to address panel behavior; it is not a routine task to run manually after every viewing session. LG’s US support page describes an automatic short pixel-cleaning cycle after every four cumulative hours and a longer calibration after 2,000 cumulative hours. Those intervals are LG-specific guidance and should not be generalized to other manufacturers or models.
Samsung says its manual Pixel Refresh can take more than an hour, should not be interrupted, and is not available on some models. LG describes automatic short and long cycles. These differences are why the TV’s own instructions matter: features, timings, and whether a manual option exists are model-dependent.
- Keep automatic compensation available and allow the TV to complete it when it is off.
- Do not start a long manual process casually or interrupt one in progress.
- Use a manual refresh when the manufacturer recommends it for observed retention, not as frequent preventive maintenance.
- If a ghost image fades after content changes, distinguish that temporary retention from a lasting mark before concluding that a manual cycle is needed.
What burn-in testing says—and what it does not
Accelerated static-content testing shows that OLED burn-in is possible, but its results cannot be translated directly into a prediction for every household. RTINGS’ August 14, 2026 analysis reports an intentionally severe CNN test lasting 18,000 hours, with visible permanent retention mainly in static areas. RTINGS explicitly cautions that this is not equivalent to ten years of ordinary mixed viewing.
The comparison also has limits: in its earlier 10,500-hour checkpoint, RTINGS used maximum SDR brightness for each tested TV rather than matching luminance across sets. That is useful context for interpreting the test, but it does not establish a universal lifespan, a safe number of hours, or a brightness level that prevents wear. A test built around repeated exposure to one channel is evidence about sustained static content, not a forecast that a mixed-use TV will reproduce the same result.

The practical takeaway is narrower: fixed, bright elements deserve more attention when they remain in place for long stretches, while varied content and built-in protections are relevant to everyday use. Neither the existence of a severe test nor its outcome justifies making ordinary viewing unnecessarily dim.
Practical habits for static-heavy viewing
If you watch news or sports with a fixed channel logo, or play games with a persistent HUD, you do not have to abandon that content. Combine the TV’s targeted protections with a few low-friction habits:
- Use low/default logo dimming as a starting point, then increase it only if the static graphic is frequent and the dimming is acceptable.
- Do not leave a bright paused game or still screen displayed while away for an extended period; resume, exit, turn off the display, or rely on a confirmed idle saver.
- Keep pixel shift and automatic compensation enabled unless your model’s manual says otherwise.
- Use a comfortable picture mode and avoid unnecessary high output during sessions dominated by static imagery.
- Vary content when convenient; do not mistake this as a requirement to constantly change what you enjoy watching.
These habits focus on repeated exposure and long idle periods rather than treating every logo, subtitle, or brief pause as an emergency. If you see an image ghost, change content and give it time to fade before assuming it is permanent wear.

Manufacturer support pages describe specific brands, regions, and software. LG’s June 26, 2026 US guidance covers its own screen saver, logo adjustment, and cleaning behavior. Samsung’s July 29, 2026 India page describes its Logo Detection levels; Samsung’s Hong Kong guidance discusses Pixel Shift, Auto Logo Brightness, refresh availability, and cases where a saver may not activate. Those examples clarify the kinds of protections to look for, but do not establish one cross-brand menu path.
Search the support page or manual for your exact model number and region. If the feature is absent from your menus, do not assume the TV is missing all protection: it may use another name, manage a function automatically, or lack that particular control. Avoid copying instructions for another model merely because the menu names sound similar.
