There is no proven universal winner among these seven document extraction options. Choose by the output your application needs—OCR, layout-aware parsing, typed fields, or RAG-ready content—and test finalists on your own difficult documents. The seven options are LandingAI Agentic Document Extraction (ADE), Reducto, LlamaParse, Docling, Unstructured, AWS Textract, and Google Document AI.
What should a document extraction API do for your application?
“Document extraction” can mean several different jobs. OCR turns page images into machine-readable text; layout parsing preserves structure such as reading order, tables, and page regions; field extraction returns values in a defined schema; classification and splitting identify document types or separate composite files; and RAG ingestion prepares content for retrieval-augmented generation. These outcomes overlap, but they are not interchangeable. A strong OCR result does not by itself establish that a system can reliably extract a field, preserve a table, or show where an answer came from.
Sushrut Mishra, writing for LandingAI on October 6, 2026, framed the choice as whether a team can trust output enough to act on it without someone rereading the page. That is a useful selection question, not a measured finding. His comparison is a vendor-authored map of products, not an independent head-to-head test. The features and figures below attributed to it should be verified against current product documentation before implementation.

How do the seven options differ?
This table summarizes the stated fit and output descriptions in Mishra’s October 6, 2026 LandingAI comparison. “Not stated” means that comparison did not establish the detail; it does not mean the product lacks the capability.

| Option | Stated fit | Output or grounding described | Deployment, integration, and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| LandingAI Agentic Document Extraction (ADE) | Audit-oriented or regulated workflows where extracted fields need verification. | Markdown and typed JSON, with page, character-range, and bounding-box grounding. | The comparison reports a limit of up to 6,000 pages or 1 GB per document; verify current endpoint and plan conditions. Deployment details and pricing unit are not stated in the comparison. |
| Reducto | Hard documents and regulated teams. | Layout-aware chunks and bounding-box citations. | The comparison reports scale and benchmark figures, but they are vendor-reported or article-reported rather than independently verified. Deployment details and pricing unit are not stated in the comparison. |
| LlamaParse | RAG work already built around LlamaIndex. | RAG-ready Markdown and layout coordinates. | The comparison reports support for 90+ formats; treat this as a feature claim and confirm coverage for your files. Deployment details and pricing unit are not stated in the comparison. |
| Docling | Self-hosted, local, or air-gapped processing. | A unified document representation and Markdown. | The open-source path shifts infrastructure, tuning, and support responsibility to your team. Hosted-service SLA and pricing details are not stated in the comparison. |
| Unstructured | Broad, multi-format ingestion. | Typed elements and element-level coordinates. | The comparison identifies the library as a self-hostable/open-source path and notes that complex reading order and tables may need tuning. Distinguish library capabilities from hosted-platform features; pricing unit is not stated in the comparison. |
| AWS Textract | AWS-native managed OCR and form workflows. | Text, tables, forms, and block geometry. | AWS documentation confirms text detection and analysis. The comparison notes that downstream semantic structure may require additional work. Pricing and deployment specifics are not stated here. |
| Google Document AI | Managed extraction in Google Cloud. | Processors for structured extraction, OCR, and specialized documents. | Google describes extraction, classification, splitting, custom extraction, and OCR/layout features. Its product page says custom extraction can be fine-tuned with as few as 10 documents; that is a vendor statement about its workflow, not a cross-product comparison. Validate processor fit and pricing for your workload. |
Which API fits a common starting point?
- For RAG already using LlamaIndex: start by evaluating LlamaParse, whose stated fit is that ecosystem and whose described output is RAG-ready Markdown with layout coordinates.
- For AWS-native OCR and forms: evaluate Textract. Its documented scope covers text detection and analysis, while semantic structure beyond the returned text, tables, forms, and geometry may need additional processing.
- For Google Cloud workflows: evaluate Document AI against the specific processor and extraction task you need, including classification or splitting if those are part of the pipeline.
- For local or air-gapped processing: Docling is a self-hostable option; the Unstructured library is another open-source path. Compare the operating burden as well as the data-control benefits.
- For review-heavy workflows: examine the exact provenance returned with each field. ADE is described as providing page, character-range, and bounding-box grounding; Reducto as providing bounding-box citations. Do not assume a parser’s coordinates automatically remain attached to downstream extracted values.
- For especially difficult or regulated documents: Reducto is positioned for hard documents and regulated teams in the LandingAI-authored comparison. Verify its claims and operational fit on your material rather than treating that positioning as independent evidence.
What do the headline figures establish—and what do they not?
Mishra’s October 6, 2026 comparison reports that Reducto had processed more than 4 billion pages and achieved 99.6% precision and recall over 225 long documents on LongExtractBench. Those are attributed scale and benchmark claims, not results from a common test of all seven options. The comparison does not establish the benchmark methodology here, so the percentage should not be treated as a prediction for your documents or compared directly with a result measured on another corpus.
The same comparison reports “90+ formats” for LlamaParse and up to 6,000 pages or 1 GB per document for ADE. These are feature and limit claims reported by the LandingAI-authored article; confirm current coverage, plan conditions, and endpoint constraints in the relevant product documentation. Format counts alone do not tell you how well a tool handles your particular tables, handwriting, scans, or reading order.

What should you test before choosing?
Run the same representative corpus through two or three finalists. Include routine files and the troublesome cases most likely to break the workflow: poor scans, multi-column pages, complex tables, mixed document types, and documents whose reading order is not obvious. Record expected answers and source locations before running the evaluation, so the review is not based on impressions.
- Define the required output. Specify whether you need searchable text, preserved layout, typed fields, classification and splitting, RAG chunks, or a combination. Include a concrete schema and examples of acceptable output.
- Build a labeled test set. Use documents representative of your real workload and annotate the correct text, fields, table relationships, and page locations. Keep difficult cases in the set rather than excluding them as outliers.
- Score distinct failure modes separately. Check field correctness, table fidelity, reading order, classification and splitting, and whether a reviewer can follow returned page or bounding-region references back to the source. A single aggregate “accuracy” score can conceal a failure that matters to your application.
- Measure workflow performance. Record latency and the human review time needed to correct errors, alongside API charges and the engineering or infrastructure work required. The October 6, 2026 LandingAI comparison does not establish comparable pricing units for these options, so calculate total cost from current quotes and your actual processing volume rather than assuming a common per-page rate.
- Evaluate operational fit. Check data handling, deployment constraints, access controls, integration work, support expectations, and who will maintain the pipeline. For self-hosted paths, include the cost of operating and tuning the system.
- Set a review threshold. Decide which fields or document classes can be acted on automatically and which require human confirmation. Even a useful citation or bounding box supports verification; it does not prove that the extracted value is correct.
Where do Azure tools fit?
Azure is not one of the seven options in the October comparison, but it is relevant if your systems already run on Azure. Microsoft currently describes Document Intelligence as part of Azure Content Understanding in Foundry Tools. Microsoft positions specialized Document Intelligence models for structured documents with common templates, while Content Understanding analyzers address variable-layout, unstructured, and multimodal work. Microsoft says production Document Intelligence APIs, endpoints, SDKs, and billing are unchanged for existing users.

Microsoft’s model documentation says custom extraction training can start with five examples of the same form or document type. That is a Microsoft workflow claim, with API-version and model conditions; it is not directly comparable to Google’s “as few as 10 documents” statement. Check the version-specific tool-selection and model documentation before adopting a preview API, because Microsoft warns that preview versions do not have an SLA.

Shortlist by job and infrastructure, then let a controlled evaluation decide. The available descriptions suggest clear starting points—Textract for AWS-native OCR and forms, Document AI for Google Cloud, LlamaParse for LlamaIndex-oriented RAG, and Docling or the Unstructured library when self-hosting matters—but they do not establish comparative accuracy or a universal best API. Choose the finalist that meets your output, grounding, deployment, and operating requirements on your own documents.
