Quartz’s October 6, 2026 roundup names four Consumer Reports countertop water filter favorites priced below $180: Home Master TMJRF2 Jr F2 Elite, WaterChef C7500, Apex MR 1050, and Aquasana AQ-CWM2-B. The best fit depends on whether you want a faucet-connected filter or a manual-fill dispenser, which contaminants matter to you, and the replacement-filter cost—not just the unit’s purchase price.
The comparisons below reflect Quartz’s summary of Consumer Reports testing and reported product details. Consumer Reports’ original test materials and the models’ certification records were not independently checked. Quartz says its testing covered taste improvement, flow rate, and resistance to clogging. Read the Quartz roundup.
How the four filters compare
| Model | Setup | Price reported by Quartz | Cartridge capacity and estimated replacement cost | Reported performance and certifications |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Home Master TMJRF2 Jr F2 Elite | Faucet-connected | $95 | 500 gallons; about $112 per year | Quartz says Consumer Reports ranked it ahead of the other countertop filters it tested. It improved taste, reduced odors, and maintained flow as the cartridge aged. Quartz says it is not certified to reduce chlorine, lead, or PFAS. |
| WaterChef C7500 | Faucet-connected | $111.96–$139.95 | 1,000 gallons; about $65 per year | Reported to improve taste and smell, maintain steady flow, and resist clogging as the cartridge aged. Includes a filter-life indicator. Quartz says it has NSF certification for reducing chlorine, lead, and PFAS. |
| Apex MR 1050 | Faucet-connected | $85 | 1,500 gallons; annual replacement cost not stated in the Quartz article | Reported to clear unpleasant tastes and smells and maintain steady flow as the cartridge aged. Quartz says it is not certified to reduce chlorine, lead, or PFAS. |
| Aquasana AQ-CWM2-B | Plug-in, manual-fill dispenser | $179.99 | 300 gallons; about $146 per year | Reported to improve taste and smell; includes a filter-life indicator. Quartz says flow was below average and that it has NSF certification for reducing chlorine, lead, and PFAS. |
Prices and annual cartridge-cost estimates are those reported by Quartz in its October 6, 2026 update; they are not live quotes and may change. Cartridge capacities are stated ratings, not a guarantee of how long a cartridge will last in your household.
Which model makes sense for your priorities?
Choose by contaminant certification
Quartz identifies the WaterChef C7500 and Aquasana AQ-CWM2-B as the two models in the roundup with NSF certification for reducing chlorine, lead, and PFAS. It says the Home Master and Apex do not have certification for reducing those substances. This is Quartz’s report, not an independent check of certification records. Before buying, verify the exact model and the specific contaminant-reduction claim in current product documentation; a general claim that a filter improves water does not establish reduction of every contaminant.
#1 Best Overall
- 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗣𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗣𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱: The DREO 7‑in‑1 RO water filter filters out 99.9% of possible contaminants in water including PFOA, PFOS, chlorine, fluoride and more. It was tested by SGS meeting NSF/ANSI 58 Standards.
Choose by setup
The Home Master, WaterChef, and Apex connect to a faucet and provide filtered water on demand. The Aquasana is a plug-in, manual-fill dispenser: you fill it rather than drawing filtered water directly from the faucet. That difference may matter if you cannot or do not want to attach a faucet unit, but Quartz reports below-average flow for the Aquasana.
Choose by cartridge capacity and upkeep
The Apex has the largest stated capacity at 1,500 gallons, while the Aquasana has the smallest at 300 gallons. Quartz estimates annual replacements at about $65 for WaterChef, $112 for Home Master, and $146 for Aquasana; it gives no annual cost estimate for Apex. Capacity alone does not determine value: actual replacement timing and cost depend on use and the cartridge’s instructions, and the roundup does not provide an Apex annual estimate.

- 𝗘𝗰𝗼-𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 & 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁-𝗦𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴: Advanced RO filtration delivers a 3:1 pure-to-drain ratio, reducing water waste and plastic trash. The filter lasts 265 gallons(1000L) of filtered water (about $0.025/bottle) and replaces in seconds with a simple twist-to-install design
- 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁, 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲-𝗦𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻: With a slim 14.51" L × 6.73" W × 13.35" H footprint, DREO countertop reverse osmosis system fits easily in kitchens, living rooms, bedrooms, or offices. A 3L tank plus 1.1L pitcher is ideal for daily use by 1 to 2 people
Choose by reported flow and convenience features
Quartz reports steady flow as cartridges aged for Home Master, WaterChef, and Apex; it also reports clog resistance for WaterChef. The Aquasana’s flow was below average. WaterChef and Aquasana include filter-life indicators, according to Quartz.
What the roundup does—and does not—establish
The Quartz article provides a useful comparison of four models, but it does not supply a complete contaminant-by-contaminant performance sheet, current certification links, or the Apex’s annual cartridge replacement cost. Its certification statements and performance descriptions should therefore be treated as claims reported by Quartz, rather than as a substitute for checking the exact model’s current documentation.

- 6-STAGE ADVANCED FILTRATION WITH UV LIGHT: The Bluevua RO100ROPOT-UV boasts a superior 6-stage filtration system, featuring a 0.0001μm RO membrane, including UV light and an added remineralization filter. Certified by WQA against NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 for lead-free and tested by SGS, this combination effectively reduces TDS, PFOA, PFOS, Chlorine, Fluoride, Arsenic, Lead, and more, while also enriching water with essential minerals, balancing taste and health benefits.
- COUNTERTOP FILTRATION + PREMIUM-QUALITY CARAFE: No plumbing or installation is required for this RO system. Simply plug this portable piece of tech into any power source and you're ready to fill it up and go! Better yet, the water container is constructed of a high borosilicate glass carafe instead of the traditional plastic, reducing the risk of secondary pollution and making this one of the best countertop water filter systems.
- POWER SAVING + WATER SAVING: The water system automatically enters power-saving standby mode when not in use to reduce power consumption. Filters are also designed to help save water with an impressive 2:1 Pure to Drain ratio. Leftover water from a cycle isn't deemed wastewater so more water is saved to use for various household purposes.
- FILTER LIFE MONITOR: The countertop water filters last for a long time between 12-24 months to provide 1-2 years of clean drinking water before needing replacement. Monitor display shows the service life of filters and water quality so you can easily keep track of filter replacement and periodically switch out filter tubes.
- SUSTAINABLE HYDRATION: 1-year limited manufacturer warranty included upon registration. Designed with premium quality components for years of reliable use, our RO system delivers bottled-quality water at home, reducing plastic waste and supporting sustainability efforts with ClimatePartner Certification.
The Apex is marketed as an alkaline-water filter. Quartz notes that Mayo Clinic characterized claimed health benefits of alkaline water as unsubstantiated; the filter’s reported taste performance should not be taken as evidence of a health benefit from alkalinity.
