Usually, none. A driver update is not a signal to apply a standard “best settings” list or reset every NVIDIA option. First identify whether your system still uses the classic NVIDIA Control Panel or the NVIDIA app, then check whether the update created a real problem. If one game is affected, change that game’s profile rather than global settings. If the only symptom is a brief stutter on the first launch, NVIDIA says the driver has deleted the shader cache and the game may be rebuilding it.
Start by identifying the NVIDIA software on your system
NVIDIA’s current GeForce guidance says supported Control Panel features are moving into the NVIDIA app. RTX PRO users are treated separately and will continue using Control Panel while NVIDIA migrates professional features. The transition is not identical on every computer: the GPU category, driver branch, Windows installation and software version determine which interface and controls you see.
An existing classic Control Panel installation generally remains unless you perform a clean driver installation. NVIDIA also says it will not add features, fixes or changes to the classic panel. That means an older menu may still work, but a missing option is not necessarily a damaged installation. For a GeForce card, open the NVIDIA app first and look for the relevant graphics settings. For an RTX PRO workstation, check the Control Panel and the professional-driver documentation that applies to that card.
Why a driver update does not require a blanket reset
Control Panel options are conditional. Availability and behavior can depend on the graphics processor, driver, application, display connection and software version. A setting that helps one game can be unnecessary or counterproductive for another, and a global change can override choices that individual games make correctly.

There are two separate layers:

NVIDIA documents separate restore controls for these layers. Therefore, do not use a full-page reset to solve a problem that belongs to one game. Review the narrowest scope that matches the symptom.
A safe post-update checklist
- Identify the GPU category and interface. Confirm whether the machine has a GeForce or RTX PRO GPU and whether the needed controls are in NVIDIA app or Control Panel.
- Describe the symptom before touching a setting. Note the affected game, whether every application is affected, and whether the behavior started immediately after the update.
- Allow for shader-cache rebuilding. If the first launch stutters but later launches improve, this can be the expected cache rebuild after a new driver installation.
- Inspect the game profile first. In classic Control Panel, open Manage 3D Settings, select Program Settings, choose the game and review only its values. Use the equivalent per-application controls in NVIDIA app when they are available there.
- Change one relevant option at a time. Apply the change, relaunch the game when requested, and check whether the named symptom changes.
- Use a restore control only at the right scope. Restore the selected program for a profile problem; use the global Restore control for global values. The Restore Defaults link for the whole Manage 3D Settings page is a wider reset.
- Apply the settings. NVIDIA’s procedure requires clicking Apply after changes. Some preferred-GPU selections require restarting the program before they take effect.
Settings worth reviewing—and when to leave them alone
Antialiasing: leave control with the game by default
NVIDIA identifies application-controlled antialiasing as the preferred choice when a game provides its own antialiasing controls. That lets the application select the technique it was designed and tested to use. After an update, do not force a driver override simply because a new driver is installed.
Consider an override only for a specific, repeatable compatibility or image-quality reason—for example, a title whose built-in control is missing or visibly malfunctioning. Make that change in the individual program profile whenever possible. If the game has a working antialiasing menu, set the feature there and keep the driver value application-controlled.

Power management mode: a trade-off, not a universal FPS switch
The power-management choices describe different behavior. Adaptive allows the driver to reduce performance according to application needs. Prefer maximum performance runs the GPU at maximum performance for most 3D applications. The latter can be useful when a particular application repeatedly drops clocks or shows a reproducible performance problem, but it is not an across-the-board frame-rate upgrade.
Use maximum performance for the affected program rather than globally when the need is limited to one game or workload. A global setting can keep the GPU at higher performance states in many applications, increasing power use, heat and fan activity without improving a workload that is already running correctly. If you cannot demonstrate a repeatable issue, leave the existing value unchanged.
Preferred graphics processor and other conditional controls
Some systems expose a preferred-GPU choice, while others let Windows or the application manage that decision. The option can also depend on display routing and hardware. If a laptop game is using the wrong adapter, review the game’s program profile or the current NVIDIA app control rather than changing every global 3D value. Restart the program after applying a preferred-GPU change, because NVIDIA notes that some selections do not take effect until the application is restarted.

Do not assume that every item in an older optimization guide is present or meaningful on the current driver. Vertical sync, texture filtering, low-latency behavior and display-related controls can have hardware- or application-specific effects. Change one only when you have a named goal and can test that goal in the affected application.
What to do about stutter after the update
NVIDIA’s help reference states that installing a new driver deletes the shader cache. The first time a game runs afterward, it may stutter while shaders are compiled again. This is a plausible explanation for first-run hitching, not proof that every stutter is caused by the cache.
- If the hitching is limited to the first run or first area, leave your settings alone and allow the game to rebuild its shaders.
- If stutter continues across later launches, check whether one game or all games are affected. Use a Program Settings profile for a single title; investigate global settings only when multiple applications show the same behavior.
- If the game reports a separate shader-compilation or cache option, use the game’s documented control rather than forcing unrelated driver overrides.
- Do not perform a full Manage 3D Settings reset solely because of a first-launch pause; that reset removes intentional customizations while addressing a symptom that may be temporary.
How to restore settings without losing more than necessary
Restore one program profile
Open Manage 3D Settings, select Program Settings, choose the affected application and use that program’s Restore control. Apply the result and relaunch the application. This removes custom values for the selected profile without resetting unrelated global settings.

Restore global values
In Global Settings, use the global Restore control when you have identified a global value that should return to its default behavior. Apply the change and retest more than one affected application so you know whether the issue was genuinely global.
Reset the entire Manage 3D Settings page
The page also provides a Restore Defaults link. Treat it as a last resort for settings troubleshooting, because it can remove deliberate global and profile customizations. Before using it, record any values you intentionally changed for accessibility, compatibility or a specific workflow. Afterward, reapply only the settings supported by a demonstrated need.

Troubleshooting branches
The game still stutters after several launches
Separate first-run cache behavior from a persistent fault. Test another game or 3D application. If only one title is affected, restore or adjust that title’s profile and use its own graphics settings. If multiple applications are affected, review global values and confirm that the driver interface you are using exposes the controls you expect.

Your change appears to do nothing
Confirm that you clicked Apply. Close and relaunch the game; a preferred-GPU change may require a restart. Also verify that you edited the intended program profile instead of Global Settings, or vice versa.
You cannot find the old Control Panel option
GeForce users may now find supported features in NVIDIA app, while RTX PRO users follow a separate Control Panel path. Existing installations can retain the classic panel, but its feature set is no longer being expanded. Check the current interface for the card and driver installed instead of assuming a missing menu indicates corruption.
A display or 3D option is unavailable
Some controls depend on the GPU, application, display connection and driver. A laptop’s internal panel, a monitor connected to a different adapter and a workstation display path can expose different choices. Treat unavailability as a hardware or routing condition to verify, not as a reason to reset every setting.

After an NVIDIA driver update, inspect rather than indiscriminately optimize. Identify the current NVIDIA software, wait out possible shader-cache rebuilding, use Program Settings for isolated problems, keep antialiasing application-controlled when the game supports it, and reserve Prefer maximum performance for a specific, repeatable need. Restore only the scope that is actually misconfigured, and apply and relaunch before judging the result.
