You do not need a keyboard marketed for gaming to play comfortably. For everyday use and casual games, an office-style keyboard can be enough; responsiveness matters more in competitive games, particularly shooters. For one keyboard that balances work and play, the low-profile mechanical Keychron K5 Max is the strongest fit in the available testing. If you care more about familiar, laptop-like typing and play casually, consider the Logitech MX Keys S instead.
What matters when choosing a non-gaming keyboard for games?
“Non-gaming” describes a design or marketing preference, not a technical performance category. Everyday keyboards are generally sufficient for work, browsing and casual or social games. When split-second inputs matter, latency and connection mode deserve more attention; RTINGS says latency is most consequential in competitive games, especially shooters, while modern keyboards are fast enough for most ordinary use. RTINGS’ 2026 keyboard guide provides that broader context.
Match the keyboard to the games and the way you type, rather than assuming a gaming label guarantees a better experience. Consider these factors:
- Responsiveness: For competitive play, look for evidence about latency and the specific connection modes tested. Wireless alone does not describe performance: Bluetooth and 2.4GHz connections are different options.
- Switch feel and noise: Scissor switches feel closer to many laptop keyboards; mechanical switches have a different feel and typically longer travel. Noise matters in shared spaces, too.
- Size and layout: A full-size keyboard includes a numpad. Tenkeyless (TKL) and compact 75% layouts omit the numpad and rearrange or remove some keys, which can free desk space but may take adjustment.
- Lighting and visibility: Check whether backlighting matters in your workspace. The K5 Max’s stock legends can be hard to read in dim rooms, according to RTINGS.
How the leading options compare
| Keyboard | Best fit | What the available reviews support | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keychron K5 Max | Work and play, including competitive games | RTINGS calls it its best low-profile gaming keyboard for most people and reports strong single-key and multi-key latency, with a 1000Hz polling rate in wired and included 2.4GHz modes. Linear and tactile low-profile switch options are identified in its guide. | Mechanical feel differs from scissor-switch office keyboards; stock legends may be difficult to read in dim rooms. |
| Logitech MX Keys S | Office typing and casual gaming | RTINGS recommends it for everyday use, including casual gaming. It is a full-size wireless scissor-switch keyboard that connects through Bluetooth or Logitech’s Bolt receiver. | It is not supported here as a competitive-latency pick and lacks the mechanical typing feel some users want. |
| Logitech Signature K650 | Budget-minded everyday use and casual play | RTINGS names it its best budget keyboard and describes a quiet, full-size wireless design suited to browsing and work. | No backlighting; RTINGS says it feels less premium than the MX Keys S. The evidence supports general-purpose use, not high-performance gaming. |

Keychron K5 Max: the best-supported all-rounder
The K5 Max is a full-size, low-profile mechanical keyboard that combines a relatively understated form with test results relevant to gaming. RTINGS reports strong single-key and multi-key latency for casual and competitive play, and a consistent 1000Hz polling rate over wired and included 2.4GHz connections. Its low-profile switch choices include linear and tactile Gateron options. Those findings make it the clearest choice here for someone who wants one keyboard for office work and games where responsiveness matters.
It is still a mechanical keyboard, not a scissor-switch board: expect a different typing feel and longer travel than on laptop-style keys. If you work in dim lighting, note RTINGS’ warning that the stock legends can be difficult to see. The K5 Max belongs to a family with smaller alternatives: the K1 Max is TKL, while the K3 Max is compact 75%. Those layouts leave out the numpad and differ in key arrangement, so weigh desk space against the convenience of a full-size layout. RTINGS’ low-profile guide covers the K5 Max and those alternatives.

Logitech MX Keys S: prioritize familiar typing and casual play
The MX Keys S is a better match if your main priorities are office work, browsing and a familiar laptop-like typing feel, with casual gaming on the side. RTINGS recommends it for everyday use and casual gaming; the keyboard is full-size, wireless and uses scissor switches. It supports Bluetooth and Logitech’s Bolt receiver. These everyday-use findings should not be read as a claim that it has a competitive-gaming latency advantage. If you want a smaller version without a numpad, the MX Keys Mini is the related option identified by RTINGS’ office guide. See RTINGS’ office keyboard guide.

When should you choose a smaller or different low-profile keyboard?
Choose TKL or 75% if desk space matters more than the numpad
A smaller keyboard can leave more room for mouse movement, but you give up the dedicated numpad and may need time to adapt to the key clusters. The K1 Max (TKL) and K3 Max (75%) are smaller members of the K5 Max family. Pick a layout based on the keys you actually use, not just its footprint. RTINGS’ low-profile guide lists these size variants.
Consider other low-profile models only for a specific reason
RTINGS also lists the Corsair K100 AIR and NuPhy Air75 V3 among low-profile alternatives. Its guide says the K100 AIR has excellent latency and brighter backlighting, and that it edges the K5 Max in competitive titles. The guide discusses the Air75 V3 as an everyday, non-mechanical alternative; the information available here does not establish a specific gaming-performance case for choosing it over the K5 Max. Check the low-profile guide for the context of those comparisons.

How to interpret keyboard testing
RTINGS says it buys keyboards itself and uses a standardized test bench. Its stated methods include a Mecmesin force tester for switch force curves and a Beagle 480 USB analyzer for input-latency testing; reviews may take days or weeks. This gives its comparisons a testing basis, but it does not establish that a particular keyboard will improve an individual player’s skill or guarantee a gaming advantage. The recommendations above describe suitability and measured responsiveness, not player outcomes. RTINGS’ office guide describes its testing approach.
