For a versatile standard zoom on a full-frame Nikon Z camera, the NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II is the strongest all-round choice in TechRadar’s 2026 guide. Its constant f/2.8 aperture suits varied light and event work, but it is expensive, has no in-lens stabilizer, and may not offer enough of an upgrade for owners of the original 24-70mm f/2.8. The right lens for you depends on your camera’s format and what you photograph.

Start by matching the lens to your Nikon Z camera

Nikon’s Z lens catalog includes both full-frame and APS-C/DX lenses. Check your camera’s format and the exact lens compatibility before buying; a lens recommendation is not universal across every Z body. Nikon’s catalog is the primary reference for the current lineup and its format labels: Nikon’s lens catalog.

Then choose by subject and working distance. A standard zoom is a flexible starting point, while portraits, close-up work, wide interiors, and distant wildlife often call for a more specialized focal length or range.

Best all-round full-frame zoom: NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II

TechRadar’s 2026 guide names the 24-70mm f/2.8 S II its best standard zoom for full-frame Nikon Z cameras. Its 24–70mm range covers many everyday and event situations, and its constant f/2.8 maximum aperture is useful when light is limited. TechRadar also positions it for weddings and events. These are editorial assessments, not results from our own testing. Read TechRadar’s Nikon Z lens guide.

#1 Best Overall
Nikon NIKKOR Z 28-400mm f/4-8 VR Mirrorless Lens
  • Covers a broad range of focal lengths—from 28mm to 400mm, with a 14.2x zoom.
  • A minimum focus distance of 0.2 m at the maximum wide-angle position and a maximum reproduction ratio of 0.35x at 28mm allows users to get closer to their subjects for dynamic expression.
  • A total length of approx. 5.57 in. (141.5 mm) and a weight of approx. 1.6 lbs (725 g)—the lightest lens in its class—make this an easy lens to carry and shoot hand-held.
  • Stable VR performance equivalent to a 5.0-stop increase in shutter speed effectively reduces blurring in dimly lit surroundings and with hand-held shooting. When paired with a compatible camera, Synchro VR can be activated to achieve up to 5.5-stop stabilization by combining in-camera VR and lens VR.
  • Support for linear MF drive enables smooth focusing, which is especially useful for video shooting.

TechRadar lists these specifications: 24–70mm focal range, f/2.8 maximum aperture, no lens image stabilizer, weather seals, a 0.24m minimum focus distance, a 77mm filter thread, dimensions of 84 × 142mm, and a weight of 675g. Digital Camera World also reports 675g and a 77mm filter thread. These are source-reported specifications, not independent measurements by this publication. When it makes sense

  • You want one full-frame zoom for a range of subjects, including events.
  • A constant f/2.8 aperture matters more to you than minimizing cost or carrying weight.
  • You value the standard 24–70mm range and do not need a longer telephoto reach from the same lens.

When to consider another lens

  • If you already own the original 24-70mm f/2.8, TechRadar cautions that the improvements may not justify replacing it.
  • If you want built-in lens stabilization, note that TechRadar lists none for this model.
  • If you would rather have more reach than a brighter maximum aperture, consider the 24-120mm f/4 S instead.

Choose by what you photograph

Nikon’s current catalog lists lenses for several distinct jobs. The model names below are options to investigate, not a universal ranking: the reviewed material does not establish a single best lens for every category.

Rank #2
Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S | Premium Constant Aperture All-in-one Zoom Lens for Z Series mirrorless Cameras (Wide Angle to telephoto) | Nikon USA Model
  • Camera compatibility: Compatible with FX and DX format Nikon Z series mirrorless (24mm-120mm on an FX format Z camera), (36mm – 180mm on a DX format Z camera).
  • Close focusing: Show the smallest details by getting as close as 1.15 ft. from your subject at any zoom position, including 120mm.
  • Autofocus: Autofocus is split between two high-speed, ultra-quiet STM stepping motors, enabling close focusing, edge-to-edge sharpness and virtually no color bleeding or focus breathing.
  • Custom control ring: Turn the ring on the lens to control, aperture, ISO or exposure compensation.
  • Dedicated manual focusing ring for smooth and precise manual focusing.

Travel and general photography: 24-120mm f/4 S

The NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S offers a longer zoom range than the 24-70mm f/2.8 S II. That extra reach can be useful when you want to reframe without changing lenses; the trade-off to weigh is its f/4 maximum aperture against the 24-70mm’s f/2.8. Nikon lists the 24-120mm f/4 S in its catalog, but the sources reviewed do not establish a universal winner between these zooms.

Portraits: 85mm f/1.8 S or 85mm f/1.2 S

Nikon lists both the NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.8 S and 85mm f/1.2 S. An 85mm prime is a focused option to explore for portrait framing and shallow-depth-of-field goals. The available comparisons do not establish which of the two is best overall, so consider the aperture you need and compare the current specifications and price in your region before choosing.

Rank #3
Nikon NIKKOR Z DX 50-250mm VR | Compact All-in-one telephoto Zoom Lens with Image stabilization for APS-C Size/DX Format Z Series mirrorless Cameras (Standard to Long telephoto) | Nikon USA Model
  • 50-250mm zoom range equivalent to a 75-375mm lens in 35mm format
  • Built-in VR image stabilization up to 5 stops
  • Features an assignable control ring
  • Image Stabilization: Optical

Wildlife and distant subjects: 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR and longer primes

For distant subjects, Nikon’s catalog includes the NIKKOR Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR and 400mm, 600mm, and 800mm options. Your choice depends on how much reach you need and how you balance portability and budget. The sources reviewed do not provide a single comparative winner across these lenses.

Close-up photography: MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S

The NIKKOR Z MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S is Nikon’s listed special-purpose full-frame macro option. Consider it when close-up work is a central need rather than choosing a standard zoom for every job.

Rank #4
Nikon NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8 S | Premium Large Aperture Prime Lens (nifty Fifty) for Series mirrorless Cameras | USA Model, Black
  • Fast 50mm prime for Z Mirrorless cameras
  • Uncanny f/1.8 performance, extreme sharpness and virtually zero distortion
  • New ultra-quiet stepping motor for silent focusing
  • Beautiful bokeh and superior Low-light performance
  • 5-Axis Dual detect optical VR powered by Z cameras

Wide-angle landscapes, architecture, and interiors: 14-24mm f/2.8 S or 14-30mm f/4 S

Nikon lists both the NIKKOR Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S and 14-30mm f/4 S. Compare their maximum apertures, size, and the kind of work you plan to do. The sources reviewed identify these catalog options but do not provide a tested ranking for landscape, architecture, or interior photography.

What the f/2.8 zoom trio means

Nikon’s UK product page groups the 14-24mm f/2.8 S, 24-70mm f/2.8 S II, and 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S as its professional S-line f/2.8 zoom trio, spanning 14mm to 200mm across the three lenses. That is system context, not a recommendation that every photographer needs all three. Nikon UK’s lens lineup.

Best Value
NIKON NIKKOR Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR
  • Ease of use. At its widest setting, the NIKKOR Z 180-600 f/5.6-6.3 VR is great for locating your subject. With a mere 70° turn of the zoom ring, you can reach all the way to 600mm for tight framing with beautiful background compression.
  • Handheld shooting. Built-in optical Vibration Reduction (VR) provides a stabilization effect equivalent to a shutter speed of 5.5 stops* faster, reducing camera blur when panning to track fast-moving subjects.
  • Versatile close shooting. The lens features a minimum focus distance of 4.27 ft at the 180mm zoom position and a large 0.25x reproduction ratio, to turn an unexpected close encounter into a once-in-a-lifetime photo or video. Pairs great with Z teleconverters. Increase your reach by 2x (up to 1200mm) with the Nikon Z Teleconverter TC-2.0x or 1.4x (up to 840mm) with the Z Teleconverter TC-1.4x (sold separately).
  • Feature rich. Quick release tripod foot, strap eyelet, customizable control ring and function buttons provide effortless operation.
  • Balanced and Built-tough. Internal zooming maintains size and center of gravity, as well as minimizes dust intrusion.

TechRadar Cameras Editor Timothy Coleman describes the Z mount’s design implications this way: “The larger-diameter flange on Z-mount cameras and its closer proximity to the image sensor means there’s more freedom in lens design.” That is Coleman’s explanation, not a quotation from Nikon.
