The highest-impact NAS changes are straightforward: remove unnecessary internet exposure, replace default administrator access, require multi-factor authentication (MFA), limit each account to the shares and apps it needs, enable failed-login protection, install firmware and application updates, and maintain both snapshots and a separate backup. Exact labels differ by NAS maker and software version, so verify every path on your installed release.

1. Remove unnecessary internet exposure first

A NAS is safest when its management interface and file services are reachable only from your home network. In your router, delete port-forwarding rules that point to the NAS and turn off UPnP-based automatic port mapping unless you have a specific, understood requirement for it. Do not put the NAS in the router’s DMZ, and keep the router firewall enabled.

QNAP advises disabling port forwarding and UPnP forwarding to avoid exposing NAS services. Its guidance describes direct forwarding as fast but vulnerable; the recommendation applies broadly even though menu names and defaults differ by vendor. See the QNAP security best-practice FAQ and the QNAP product-security overview.

Leave remote access off when you do not need it

If you only use files, photos, backups, or media while at home, disable the NAS vendor’s remote-access feature as well as router mappings. This removes an entire class of internet login attempts and avoids maintaining a service you do not use.

Choose a safer method when outside access is required

Remote access is a trade-off, not a single setting. Compare the practical choices before enabling one:

Method Exposure and setup Trade-offs QNAP describes Best fit
Direct port forwarding or UPnP NAS services are reachable through a router port; setup can be automatic. Fast and convenient, but vulnerable because services are exposed to the public internet. Generally avoid for home administration and file access.
VPN on the router Connect to the home network through a supported router VPN. Relatively simple for users, but performance and client capacity can be limited by router hardware. Households wanting remote access without publishing NAS services.
VPN hosted by the NAS The NAS runs the VPN service and authenticates clients. More configurable, but requires more setup and ongoing maintenance. Users comfortable managing VPN software and updates.
Vendor relay service A relay connects the client without exposing the NAS directly through a router port. Easy to set up and avoids direct exposure, but connection speed can be slower and controls depend on the vendor. Occasional remote access where simplicity matters more than maximum throughput.

Whichever option you choose, restrict permitted users, require MFA where supported, and turn it off when no longer needed. A changed management port may reduce background scan noise, but it is not a security boundary and must never substitute for removing public exposure, patching, and controlling accounts.

2. Replace default administrator access and reduce permissions

Create and verify a named administrator

Known default usernames are attractive targets. Create a personal administrator account with a unique, long password, sign in successfully with it, and only then disable the default administrator account if your NAS supports that operation. QNAP specifically recommends disabling the default admin account where applicable. If your platform cannot disable it, use a different administrator name, a strong password, MFA, and failed-login protection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

QNAP’s FAQ gives an eight-character minimum with mixed character classes. That is a vendor-specific recommendation on a page last modified 2022-12-16, not a universal current standard; use a longer passphrase that is unique to the NAS and store it in a password manager.

Separate administration from everyday file use

Do not use an administrator account for ordinary file browsing, media playback, synchronization, or backup jobs. Create individual accounts for household members and services. Grant each account only the shared folders, applications, and operations it needs. Remove stale accounts promptly, and review inherited group permissions as well as direct permissions.

Synology documents per-folder and per-application permissions, firewall controls, Auto Block, Account Protection, and MFA in its Security Solutions overview. The same principle applies to other platforms even when the labels differ.

Require MFA and block repeated failures

Enable MFA for every administrator and for other users who can access sensitive data or remote services. Supported DSM configurations can use app approval, one-time passwords, or compatible hardware security keys such as FIDO2/U2F devices. Turn on failed-login blocking or account-protection features, set a notification destination you monitor, and ensure the lockout policy does not prevent a legitimate recovery path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Disable unused services, applications, and accounts

Every enabled service adds code, credentials, and a possible attack surface. Uninstall applications no one uses and disable services such as Telnet, FTP, or SSH when they are not required. Check dependencies first: a backup job, scanner, camera system, or synchronization client may rely on a service you are considering disabling. If SSH is needed for administration, limit it to the local network or VPN, use key-based authentication when the platform supports it, and do not expose it through a router port.

Review the NAS application list for packages you did not install, remove unknown accounts, and investigate unfamiliar login alerts rather than dismissing them. Keep certificates valid for any encrypted web interface or service, and use the vendor’s security-notification controls so important events reach you.

4. Keep firmware and applications current

Enable automatic security updates when your model and household can tolerate automatic restarts; otherwise check the vendor’s update page regularly and install supported firmware and package updates promptly. Firmware availability depends on the exact model and software branch, so an instruction written for one generation may not match your interface.

Synology says its NAS products will receive firmware and software updates for up to five years. That is a vendor statement, not a guarantee for every model or region; check the support status of your device. An old, unsupported NAS should not be exposed to the internet. Isolate it on the home network, place it behind a VPN, or replace it if it stores irreplaceable data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

QNAP’s best-practice FAQ also recommends current firmware and application versions, but the page was last modified in 2022. Use it for the security principle and verify the current update workflow in your installed interface.

5. Run the platform’s security checks

Synology DSM

In DSM 7.4, firewall, Auto Block, and Account Protection are under Control Panel > Security. The version-specific DSM 7.4 User’s Guide also documents certificates and MFA options. Synology’s Security Advisor can scan settings, identify malware or vulnerable configuration, and flag unusual login activity. Run it after major configuration changes and review each finding instead of blindly applying every suggestion.

QNAP and other platforms

QNAP provides tools including QuFirewall and Malware Remover, while other vendors use different names or package sets. Treat these tools as checks and detection aids, not substitutes for removing exposure, limiting permissions, and maintaining recoverable backups. Confirm that a package is supported by your model before installing it.

6. Configure snapshots and an independent backup

Use snapshots for quick rollback

If your NAS supports snapshots, schedule them for the volumes that contain important files and define a retention policy that fits available capacity. A snapshot can help recover from accidental deletion or unwanted file changes, but it normally remains on the same storage system. A compromised administrator account, ransomware event, controller failure, or physical damage can affect both the live data and its snapshots.

On QNAP systems, snapshots require a storage pool and volume. Other platforms have their own filesystem and capacity requirements, so check the model documentation before enabling them.

Keep a separate copy

Maintain at least one backup destination independent of the NAS. Vendor documentation names external storage, another NAS, and cloud storage as possible targets. Select a destination using these criteria:

Destination Physical separation Recovery characteristics Costs and constraints
External USB drive Can be disconnected and stored separately from the NAS. Fast local restores; versioning depends on the backup software and capacity. One-time hardware cost; requires a rotation and safe-storage routine.
Another NAS at a different location Can survive a local theft, fire, or power event if genuinely off-site. Good for automated, versioned replication; restore speed depends on the link. Requires second hardware, administration, and reliable connectivity.
Cloud storage Normally off-site and provider-hosted. Convenient remote recovery and versioning when the service supports it. Recurring charges, upload bandwidth, region availability, and provider-account security.

Encrypt backups when the platform and destination support it, protect the backup account with MFA, and keep at least one copy disconnected or otherwise protected from the same credentials that administer the NAS. Periodically restore a representative file or folder; a backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a verified recovery plan.

RAID can help a system remain available after a disk failure, but it is not an independent backup. Treat redundancy and backup as separate controls.

7. A practical hardening sequence

  1. Inventory access: list every router rule, UPnP mapping, remote-access feature, user, group, application, and enabled service.
  2. Close the perimeter: remove NAS port forwards, disable UPnP mapping, confirm the NAS is not in a DMZ, and turn off remote access you do not need.
  3. Secure recovery access: create and test a named administrator, then disable the default administrator where supported. Store recovery codes for MFA securely.
  4. Apply least privilege: create individual accounts, remove stale users, and review share and application permissions.
  5. Enable defenses: turn on MFA, failed-login blocking or account protection, firewall rules, and security notifications.
  6. Reduce services: remove unknown packages and disable unused Telnet, FTP, SSH, and similar services after checking dependencies.
  7. Patch: update firmware and applications, then run the platform’s security-advisor or malware-scan tools.
  8. Protect recovery: schedule snapshots, configure a separate backup destination, set retention, and perform a test restore.

8. Troubleshoot common problems without weakening security

You locked yourself out

Use the platform’s documented local recovery procedure or a second administrator account. Do not solve a lockout by re-enabling public port forwarding. After recovery, rotate affected credentials, review login logs, and regenerate MFA recovery codes if they may have been exposed.

A remote connection stopped working

First verify whether the VPN or relay client is connected and whether the NAS service is listening on the local network. Check router and NAS firewall rules, certificate validity, DNS, and account permissions. Avoid opening a new public port as a quick fix; use the supported VPN or relay path and restrict it to the users who need it.

Snapshots consume too much space

Review snapshot frequency and retention, remove obsolete versions according to your recovery needs, and reserve capacity for normal file growth. Do not delete the separate backup merely to make room for snapshots; they protect against different failure modes.

The NAS has no more security updates

Disconnect it from the public internet immediately, restrict local access, migrate data to a supported platform, and verify that your independent backup can be restored. Unsupported firmware should not be treated as safe simply because the NAS is behind a router.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Recheck settings after changes

After a firmware upgrade, router replacement, new application install, or household-user change, repeat the exposure and permission review. Confirm that UPnP has not recreated a port mapping, that MFA still works, that notifications arrive, and that a recent backup and snapshot are visible. Vendor interfaces evolve, so use documentation for the exact model and release rather than copying a path from another product generation.
