Start with NARUTO SHIPPUDEN: Ultimate Ninja STORM Trilogy if you want to follow Naruto’s story in order. Its three games move from Naruto’s origins through Shippuden and the Akatsuki battles to the beginning of the Great Ninja War. Choose NARUTO X BORUTO Ultimate Ninja STORM CONNECTIONS instead if you want one standalone title with an optional low-input control scheme, or choose Ultimate Ninja STORM Legacy if you want the publisher’s collection of all four numbered Storm games.
The right choice depends mainly on story coverage, how many games you want to own, your platform and whether you want Connections’ Simple Control Mode. Current prices, stock, online activity and comparative combat quality are separate questions because they vary by region and date.
The short answer
For a first playthrough that follows the anime-inspired game storyline, buy the edition of Ultimate Ninja STORM Trilogy available for your platform and begin with the first Storm game. Nintendo’s official Switch description says the package starts with Naruto’s origins, continues through Shippuden and his battles with the Akatsuki, and reaches the beginning of the Great Ninja War.
There are two sensible alternatives:
- Choose Ultimate Ninja STORM Legacy if you want all four numbered Storm games in one publisher collection, including Storm 4: Road to Boruto.
- Choose STORM CONNECTIONS if you want one newer, standalone game, a condensed Naruto-and-Sasuke story feature, a separate Boruto story and an optional Simple Control Mode.
Connections is not presented as a complete replay of every earlier campaign. Its story feature selects Naruto and Sasuke scenes, while its Boruto material is a separate story.

What each edition actually contains
Ultimate Ninja STORM Trilogy
Trilogy is a three-game package. The sequence is:
- Ultimate Ninja Storm — Naruto’s origins.
- Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 — the Shippuden period and battles with the Akatsuki.
- Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 — the beginning of the Great Ninja War.
The Nintendo Switch listing says the package also includes earlier downloadable content, such as missions, outfits and episodes. That makes Trilogy the clearest cited starting point for someone who wants the first three Storm campaigns in story progression rather than a summary.
The cited Nintendo US listing displays an April 26, 2018 release date and is specifically for Switch. That date identifies the listed edition; it is not a promise that every region or storefront still carries the same physical or digital version.
Ultimate Ninja STORM Legacy
Legacy is the publisher’s collection of all four numbered Storm games:
- Storm (the original game, credited to 2008).
- Storm 2 (credited to 2010).
- Storm 3: Full Burst (credited to 2013).
- Storm 4: Road to Boruto (credited to 2017).
Bandai Namco’s product page lists Legacy for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. If your goal is to play the complete numbered sequence, Legacy extends the Trilogy route with the fourth game. If you only want to sample Naruto’s game adaptation, its larger package may be more than you need.
The Legacy product page also reports more than 16 million NARUTO SHIPPUDEN: Ultimate Ninja STORM games sold worldwide. The page does not provide a dated sales snapshot, so treat that as a publisher-stated historical figure, not as evidence that Legacy is automatically the best beginner choice.

NARUTO X BORUTO Ultimate Ninja STORM CONNECTIONS
Connections is described by Bandai Namco as the next entry in the series rather than as a bundle of the earlier campaigns. Its story feature presents selected scenes from Naruto’s childhood through the final battle with Sasuke, then adds an exclusive Boruto story. That makes it useful for a recap, but it should not be bought on the assumption that it reproduces every prior Storm story mission in full.
Connections is listed for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch. Bandai Namco’s 2024 launch announcement says it has more than 130 playable characters. The official product page repeats the roster claim without a visible publication date, so the 2024 announcement is the dated attribution for that number.

Choose according to the kind of beginner you are
You want the story from the beginning
Pick Trilogy and start with Ultimate Ninja Storm. It is the only option in the cited material explicitly described as beginning with Naruto’s origins and then moving through the first three major Storm story stages. Play the games in the package order rather than starting with Storm 2 or Storm 3; that preserves the intended progression and avoids jumping into later story material.
You want every numbered Storm game
Pick Legacy if it is available on your PlayStation 4, Xbox One or PC storefront. Its defining advantage is scope: it includes Storm, Storm 2, Storm 3: Full Burst and Storm 4: Road to Boruto. Trilogy stops after Storm 3, so it cannot substitute for Legacy when the fourth numbered game is the deciding requirement.
You want one title instead of a multi-game package
Pick Connections. It is the practical route when you prefer a single current entry rather than working through three or four separate campaigns. Be clear about the compromise: its Naruto-and-Sasuke material is a selection of scenes, not a claim to reproduce the complete earlier campaign sequence.

You want simplified inputs
Connections is the only option in the cited material with a named accessibility-style control feature. Bandai Namco says Simple Control Mode lets players perform a series of actions with one button, ranging from a Chakra Dash to complex combos. That describes how inputs can be assigned; it does not establish that every mode, mission or opponent is easier, nor does it provide comparative difficulty testing against the older games.

You specifically want Boruto content
Connections includes a separate Boruto story, while Legacy includes Storm 4: Road to Boruto as part of its four-game package. These are different buying paths: Connections is one standalone title with its own Boruto story, whereas Legacy gives you the numbered Storm sequence and the Road to Boruto edition inside that collection.
How the story options differ
Trilogy: a sequential route through three games
Trilogy is easiest to understand as a chronological starting route. The first game establishes Naruto’s origins. Storm 2 shifts into Shippuden and the Akatsuki conflicts. Storm 3 reaches the beginning of the Great Ninja War. The Nintendo description’s wording is important: it says the package reaches the beginning of that war, not that the three-game package covers every later event.
The included missions, outfits and episodes from earlier downloadable content add material to those games, but their inclusion does not turn Trilogy into a fourth Storm game. You are still buying a three-game package whose stated story endpoint is Storm 3’s portion of the war.
Legacy: the broadest numbered-game sequence
Legacy follows the same first-three-game route and then adds Storm 4: Road to Boruto. For a player who wants to see how the numbered series develops across its full four-game run, this is the most complete collection named in the official descriptions. The individual game credits—2008, 2010, 2013 and 2017—also show the release-era span represented by the package.

Those years are credits for the original games listed by Bandai Namco, not a guarantee that a current remaster, port or storefront edition launched in the same year. Check the exact edition shown in your store before buying.
Connections: recap plus a separate Boruto story
Connections takes a different approach from a sequential collection. Its Naruto-and-Sasuke feature selects scenes from Naruto’s childhood through their final battle. That can be convenient if you want the central rivalry in one place, but selected scenes inevitably provide a different experience from playing the earlier campaigns in order.
The separate Boruto story is an additional reason to choose Connections, not evidence that the game contains every Storm story chapter. Treat it as a standalone entry with recap material and new Boruto-focused content.

For players who find traditional fighting-game inputs difficult, Connections’ Simple Control Mode is the clearest documented advantage. The publisher’s feature statement says one button can trigger a chain of actions, specifically mentioning Chakra Dash through complex combos.
- What is established: the mode can reduce the number of inputs needed for described actions.
- What is not established: that every character, mission or online mode uses identical one-button behavior.
- What is not established: that Connections has lower overall difficulty than Trilogy or Legacy.
If input simplicity is your deciding factor, confirm that the mode appears in the edition and platform you intend to buy, then look for its setting in the game’s control options after installation. The cited material identifies the feature but does not provide a platform-specific menu path or a complete list of supported actions.

Platform and regional checks before purchase
The three named editions do not share the same listed platforms. Trilogy’s cited official listing is for Nintendo Switch. Legacy is listed for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Connections is listed for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch.
Use this checklist before you pay:
- Identify your exact hardware. Distinguish, for example, between an Xbox One and an Xbox Series X|S, or between a PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
- Open your regional storefront. The official Naruto catalogue warns that information can vary by region and may only be current as of publication.
- Confirm the edition name. “Trilogy,” “Legacy” and “Connections” are different products with different story coverage.
- Check the included content description. Look for the three-game package, the four named Legacy games or Connections’ Boruto story and Simple Control Mode.
- Verify format and availability. The cited material does not establish current physical stock, digital inventory or prices for every region.
Do not assume that a game listed for one console is automatically available in the same format on another. The cited platform lists establish the named editions, not universal backward-compatibility, bundle or stock policies.
A sensible first-playthrough plan
Plan A: story-first player
- Choose Trilogy on a storefront that lists the Switch edition available in your region.
- Launch the first Storm game, not Storm 2 or Storm 3.
- Complete the first game before moving to Storm 2, then continue to Storm 3.
- Use the included missions, outfits and episodes as optional additions after you understand the main progression.
- If you want the continuation represented by the fourth numbered game, reassess Legacy rather than assuming Trilogy contains it.

- Confirm that Legacy is listed for your PlayStation 4, Xbox One or PC storefront.

Final decision
Choose Ultimate Ninja STORM Trilogy for the clearest story-first beginning. Choose Ultimate Ninja STORM Legacy when owning all four numbered Storm games matters more than having the smallest package. Choose STORM CONNECTIONS when you want one standalone title, selected Naruto-and-Sasuke story scenes, a separate Boruto story and the documented Simple Control Mode. Whichever route you take, verify the platform edition and regional storefront listing before purchasing.
