For most systems, change settings in this order: select the highest practical source quality, decide whether loudness normalization suits your listening, leave EQ flat until you have a specific tonal problem, run your receiver’s room correction from the proper listening position, and then verify speaker, subwoofer, and crossover settings. There is no universally best combination: the right choices depend on whether you want source fidelity, steadier volume, a different tonal balance, or compensation for your room and speakers.

Change one setting at a time and compare at approximately the same playback level. A louder result often sounds “better” even when the setting itself has not improved fidelity.

Start with the setting that limits everything else: source quality

Streaming or download quality determines how much of the original audio reaches your playback chain. Higher quality can reduce compression, but it also uses more bandwidth and storage and may make no audible difference on a particular device, listening environment, or wireless route. Treat it as an option to verify, not an automatic upgrade.

Apple Music

Apple’s Music settings let you choose audio quality for streaming and downloads. Enable lossless only after checking the complete signal path: the phone, computer, cable or wireless connection, receiver, and speakers or headphones. A device or route that resamples, compresses, or cannot decode the selected format may prevent the setting from producing the expected result. Apple documents these controls in About lossless audio in Apple Music.

Spotify

Spotify exposes separate quality choices for online streaming and downloads. The service can adapt quality to reduce stuttering, so the selected maximum is not always the quality delivered at every moment. Check both settings rather than assuming a download preference changes streaming playback.

Also check the active destination. A phone’s app setting does not necessarily control a connected television, smart speaker, game console, receiver, or other third-party device. Spotify’s quality controls and supported levels can vary by platform.

A practical quality decision

  • Choose the highest setting your data plan, network, and storage comfortably support.
  • Use a lower setting when buffering, cellular data limits, or storage capacity are more important than maximum source quality.
  • Test the route you actually use. Wired headphones, Bluetooth, casting, and a receiver’s network client can follow different limitations.
  • Do not use “lossless” as proof that two routes will sound different; the rest of the chain and the recording itself still determine the audible result.

Choose whether loudness normalization belongs in your system

Normalization changes playback level so tracks with different mastering levels play at more consistent loudness. It does not remaster the files or remove the original dynamic range. Turn it on when a playlist jumps uncomfortably between quiet and loud songs; turn it off when you want to preserve the level differences chosen in the recordings.

Spotify’s documented levels

Spotify says, “We use loudness normalization to balance soft and loud songs for a more consistent listening experience.” Its stated normal target is -14 dB LUFS. Premium playback offers three documented choices:

Spotify level Target stated by Spotify When it may fit
Loud -11 dB LUFS When you want a higher normalized playback level, while accepting that the service’s target is not a universal loudness standard.
Normal -14 dB LUFS Spotify’s ordinary normalization target for consistent playlist loudness.
Quiet -19 dB LUFS When you prefer more headroom or a lower overall normalized level.

These figures describe Spotify’s implementation, not an industry-wide definition of correct loudness. Spotify also states that normalization is not used by its web player and by third-party devices such as televisions or speakers. The same playlist can therefore behave differently depending on where it is playing.

Apple’s equivalent control

Apple’s iPhone Music guide describes Sound Check as a way to normalize the volume level of audio. It is analogous to Spotify normalization in purpose, but Apple does not thereby promise identical measurement, targets, or behavior across devices.

How to decide

  • Use normalization: mixed playlists, background listening, parties, or driving, where reaching for the volume control between songs is a nuisance.
  • Disable normalization: album listening, critical comparisons, or any situation where the artist’s track-to-track level relationships are part of the experience.
  • Recheck after changing routes: an app, web player, receiver, and smart speaker may not apply the same processing.

Keep EQ neutral until you can name the problem

EQ changes tonal balance; it does not automatically increase fidelity. A flat or off setting is the most useful baseline when the system has no obvious tonal issue. From that baseline, make small changes for a specific problem or preference and keep the result you prefer.

What to adjust

  • Too much bass: try a modest low-frequency cut before reducing the entire system’s volume.
  • Thin or bass-light sound: try a small low-frequency boost, watching for boom, distortion, or reduced headroom.
  • Dull vocals or detail: a slight upper-mid or treble adjustment may help, but excessive boosts can make cymbals and sibilants harsh.
  • Fatigue or brightness: a small treble reduction is often safer than continually lowering the master volume.

Boosting several bands can consume amplifier and speaker headroom. If a boosted setting distorts, reduce the master level or use cuts elsewhere rather than assuming the speakers are defective.

Availability varies by platform

Spotify’s Equalizer Overview says EQ availability is platform-specific. On Android, support depends on the device manufacturer. Desktop listeners may need to use EQ built into their speakers, receiver, operating system, or another playback component. Apple’s iPhone Music controls include EQ options. Menu names and band controls can change with app and operating-system updates, so verify the current device’s own labels.

Do not copy a fixed “best” curve from another system. Headphone response, speaker placement, room reflections, hearing preferences, and recording style all change what a given curve does.

Run receiver room correction before manual tuning

If an AV receiver supports microphone-based room correction, use it as the starting point for speaker levels, distances, crossover values, and equalization. The measurement is intended to account for the interaction between your speakers, listening position, and room; it is more repeatable than guessing from the couch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare the measurement

  1. Connect every speaker and subwoofer you intend to use.
  2. Place the supplied, receiver-compatible measurement microphone exactly as the receiver manual specifies.
  3. Keep the room quiet. Turn off fans and avoid touching the microphone or tripod during sweeps.
  4. Run the complete automated procedure before changing individual levels or EQ bands.
  5. Save or note the resulting distances, levels, crossover values, and listening mode so you can recover them if a later experiment is worse.

Many receivers include the microphone, but not all accessories are interchangeable. If yours is missing, search for a receiver room calibration microphone only after confirming the exact receiver model and microphone requirement in its manual.

Yamaha RX300A example

Yamaha’s RX300A documentation says its room-correction measurement can determine speaker connection, distance, level, frequency, and phase relative to the measurement position. Its Auto EQ applies values obtained from Room Correction, while the manual also exposes manual EQ and speaker-level controls. The menu sequence and defaults in that manual describe the RX300A; do not assume another Yamaha or another brand uses the same labels.

Denon AVC-X8500H example

Denon’s AVC-X8500H Audyssey procedure directs you to put the microphone at the main listening position, with its tip toward the ceiling and at seated ear height. Denon describes Dynamic EQ as compensating for frequency-response and hearing characteristics during lower-volume listening. If you change speaker connections or subwoofer volume after setup, Denon advises rerunning Audyssey so the measurements match the new configuration.

Onkyo and Dolby guidance

Onkyo’s TX-NR7100 AccuEQ setup measures levels, crossover frequencies, and distance, then adjusts EQ for the acoustic environment. Dolby’s Atmos setup guidance likewise notes that room calibration can optimize an Atmos installation. These procedures are model- and system-specific, so follow the microphone placement and listening-position instructions that came with your receiver.

Check speaker size, subwoofer, and crossover settings

Do not force one crossover frequency onto every system. Start with the values measured by room correction and the recommendations in your speaker and receiver manuals. A crossover that works in a compact satellite system can be wrong for large full-range speakers, a different subwoofer, or a room with strong low-frequency modes.

The documented 80 Hz example

The Yamaha RX300A manual lists 80 Hz as its default crossover. That is a concrete setting for that model, not a universal rule. Use it as a reference point only when your receiver or speakers provide no better measured or documented starting value.

After automatic setup

  • Confirm that every connected speaker is detected.
  • Check that no speaker is accidentally set to “None” or an unintended size.
  • Verify that the subwoofer is powered, connected, and at a sensible volume before calibration.
  • Inspect unusually high or low distance and level results for wiring, placement, or microphone errors.
  • Listen for a gap around the crossover region; if bass disappears or becomes boomy, rerun measurement before making large manual changes.

A setting-by-setting workflow that avoids false improvements

  1. Choose source quality. Set streaming and download quality separately where the app provides separate controls. Confirm the active playback destination.
  2. Set normalization. Decide whether you want consistent playlist loudness or original track-level contrasts. Check whether the current player or device supports the feature.
  3. Return EQ to flat. Disable presets and enhancements temporarily so later comparisons have a known baseline.
  4. Run room correction. Use the supplied microphone, the documented position, and the full measurement sequence.
  5. Verify crossover and levels. Compare the receiver’s results with speaker guidance and correct only clear setup errors.
  6. Make one personal adjustment. Change one EQ band, listening mode, or level at a time. Compare familiar passages at similar loudness.
  7. Keep notes. Record the original values and the reason for each change. This makes it easy to undo a setting that helped one album but harms another.

Troubleshooting common results

The lossless setting made no audible difference

Check whether the playback destination supports the selected format and whether the route applies Bluetooth or other compression. Confirm that you are comparing the same master at matched volume. A higher source setting can still be worthwhile for archiving or future hardware, but it is not guaranteed to sound different today.

Tracks are still jumping in volume

Confirm normalization is enabled in the player actually producing sound. Spotify states that its web player and third-party devices such as televisions or speakers do not use the feature. Disable competing volume modes in the receiver or television while testing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

EQ sounds harsh, boomy, or distorted

Return to flat, then use smaller changes. Multiple boosts reduce headroom; cuts are often less likely to overload the chain. Compare at equal loudness, because a boosted band can make a setting seem better simply by making it louder.

Room correction produced an odd balance

Rerun the procedure with the microphone at the specified height and orientation, a quiet room, and the subwoofer set as instructed. Check speaker wiring and connections. If you changed speaker connections or subwoofer volume afterward, rerun the model’s calibration; Denon explicitly recommends this for the AVC-X8500H.

Bass is missing or excessive after calibration

Inspect the crossover, speaker-size, phase, and subwoofer settings before adding EQ. Use the receiver’s measured values as a starting point, then make a small change and recheck with several recordings. The 80 Hz RX300A default should not be treated as a diagnosis for another system.

How to prioritize the trade-offs

If your priority is… Start with… Watch for…
Source fidelity The highest practical streaming or download quality, then a flat EQ baseline. Bandwidth, storage, unsupported routes, and the possibility of no audible change.
Consistent loudness Sound Check or the player’s loudness-normalization control. Different behavior in web players and third-party playback devices.
Personal tonal balance Room correction first, then small EQ changes. Fixed presets that suit another room or headphone.
Better bass integration or Atmos imaging Microphone-based receiver calibration and verified crossover values. Incorrect microphone placement, changed speaker wiring, or model-specific menus.
Simple operation Automatic correction followed by minimal manual changes. Leaving several hidden enhancements enabled at once, making cause and effect unclear.
