In MSI Afterburner, the GPU core voltage and Power Limit sliders on the main window are the direct controls for voltage and board-power behavior. The related Temperature Limit can be linked to the power limit. For finer voltage work, open the Curve Editor (or press Ctrl+F). Fan behavior is configured separately under Settings > Fan by enabling Enable user defined software automatic fan control and editing the temperature-to-fan-speed curve.
Those controls are conditional, not universal. Your NVIDIA GPU model, firmware, driver, and—especially for laptops—the manufacturer’s fan design determine which controls appear and how much authority they have. Unlocking a slider exposes a control where supported; it does not make unsupported voltage or fan changes possible.
What each Afterburner control does
Use this map before changing anything. “Available” means the interface can expose a control; it does not promise that the card firmware will accept every value.

MSI describes Afterburner as free graphics-card software and says its fan feature lets users customize a predefined fan-speed curve to determine cooling behavior. The product description is available on the MSI Afterburner product page.

Check support and record a baseline first
Before enabling an option, identify the exact GPU model and whether it is a desktop card or a laptop GPU. Two NVIDIA cards with the same GPU family can expose different voltage, power, temperature, or fan controls because the board, firmware, cooler, and manufacturer policy differ. A driver update or firmware change can also alter what Afterburner can control.
Run a repeatable workload at stock settings and note the behavior rather than relying on a single idle reading. Record:
- GPU core clock and memory clock
- GPU core voltage, if the sensor is exposed
- GPU temperature
- Board power or GPU power reading
- Fan speed and whether the fan is controlled automatically
- Visible artifacts, stutter, crashes, or other stability problems
MSI’s monitoring and on-screen-display guide explains how to display these readings while an application is running. A baseline lets you tell whether a later change actually altered clocks, power, temperature, noise, or stability.

Expose voltage controls in Settings
Afterburner separates the act of exposing a control from the hardware’s ability to use it. The two relevant switches are under Settings > General:

- Unlock voltage control exposes the GPU core-voltage control where the card and Afterburner support it.
- Unlock voltage monitoring exposes voltage telemetry where a usable sensor is available.
Use this procedure:
- Open MSI Afterburner and click the Settings gear.
- On the General tab, enable Unlock voltage control and, if you need to observe voltage, Unlock voltage monitoring.
- Apply the change and restart Afterburner if the interface requests it.
- Return to the main window and check whether GPU core voltage and a voltage reading are now available.
If the slider or telemetry still does not appear, do not assume the installation is faulty. The GPU firmware, board design, driver, or laptop manufacturer may deliberately prevent software voltage adjustment or reporting. An unlock checkbox cannot override those restrictions, and you should not treat a visible slider as proof that every position will be accepted.
Use the main-window voltage, power, and temperature controls
GPU core voltage
The main-window GPU core voltage slider is the straightforward voltage control. Increasing or decreasing the request can change the operating point selected by the GPU, but the actual result is governed by the card’s voltage table and firmware. Some cards clamp the request to an allowed range; others expose the control but make little or no observable change.
Change voltage only while watching the voltage, clock, temperature, and power readings. A voltage adjustment is not a performance guarantee: a higher request may permit a higher clock on a card that has thermal and power headroom, while a lower request can reduce heat or power if the card remains stable. The sources do not establish one safe voltage for all NVIDIA models, so use the limits presented for your own card rather than copying a value from another GPU.

The Power Limit slider defines how much board-power behavior the GPU is allowed within the card-specific range. It is a ceiling used by the GPU’s control logic, not a command that forces the card to consume that amount. Raising the limit can prevent power limiting from constraining a sustained workload; lowering it can deliberately restrict power and may reduce clock speed or performance.

MSI’s overclocking and undervolting guide demonstrates changing power-related controls and then checking power and performance during a workload. Its example values are procedural examples, not universal targets. The percentage range shown in your own Afterburner window is the relevant one for your card.
Temperature Limit
The Temperature Limit is another boundary used by the GPU’s automatic management. Afterburner may show a link between the temperature and power limits; when linked, changing one can move the other or constrain the available combination. Treat this slider as a limit control, not as a promise that the GPU will hold exactly that temperature. Cooling capacity, workload, ambient temperature, fan behavior, and the GPU’s own boost logic still determine the observed result.
Adjust voltage and frequency with Curve Editor
The Curve Editor shows voltage points along one axis and corresponding GPU frequencies along the other. It is the control to use when you want to shape a specific voltage-frequency operating point instead of moving the entire request with a slider. This is commonly used for undervolting, where the goal is to sustain an acceptable clock at a lower voltage, but the same editor can be used for other curve adjustments.
- Click Curve Editor in the main window, or press Ctrl+F, as described in MSI’s guide.
- Inspect the existing curve and identify the voltage/frequency point you intend to change.
- Adjust one point or a small, related section rather than making many unrelated edits at once.
- Close or apply the editor using Afterburner’s controls, then click Apply in the main window.
- Run the same repeatable workload used for your baseline while watching clock, voltage, temperature, power, and fan readings.
Firmware can clip a requested point, reshape neighboring points, or otherwise constrain the final curve. Therefore, verify the curve that the GPU actually runs under load rather than assuming the graph alone proves the setting took effect. A curve that appears stable in a short desktop test can still fail during a longer game or compute workload.

Set a custom fan-speed curve
Fan control is configured independently from voltage and power. To use Afterburner’s software curve:
- Open the Settings window.
- Select the Fan tab.
- Enable Enable user defined software automatic fan control.
- Edit the curve nodes so each GPU-temperature point requests the fan speed you want.
- Click Apply, then confirm that the main window and monitoring overlay show the expected fan behavior.
The curve is a temperature-to-requested-speed map. A flatter, lower curve generally favors less noise at light or moderate loads, while an earlier or steeper increase favors cooling and may produce more audible fan operation. Neither approach is automatically safe: a fan request that is too low for the actual workload can allow overheating and thermal throttling. Test with the applications you really use and watch temperature over a sustained period.
Laptop GPU fans are a special case. MSI notes that a laptop manufacturer may preset the fan behavior and prevent a custom Afterburner curve. If the Fan tab lacks the option, the curve will not apply, or the fan ignores it, the limitation may be intentional firmware or embedded-controller behavior rather than a bad curve.
How the controls interact
These settings influence the same thermal and power-management system, so evaluate them together but change them methodically.

Power-limited workload
If the GPU repeatedly reaches its power limit while temperatures remain acceptable, a higher card-supported Power Limit may remove that particular constraint. It can also allow higher sustained clocks and more heat. Verify both power and performance; do not infer a benefit merely from moving the slider.
Temperature-limited workload
If the GPU reaches its thermal limit, lowering voltage with the Curve Editor or improving the fan curve may reduce heat. Raising the Temperature Limit does not add cooling capacity and can increase thermal stress or noise, so it should not be used as a substitute for adequate cooling.
Noise-sensitive undervolting
A curve-based voltage/frequency adjustment can reduce power at a chosen clock when the card remains stable. Pair it with a fan curve that responds to the resulting temperature, then check for clock oscillation, artifacts, application crashes, or driver resets. The best point is hardware-specific; there is no generally supported voltage or clock target in MSI’s documentation.

- Start at defaults. Save or note the stock profile and baseline readings.
- Choose one objective. Decide whether you are addressing power draw, temperature, noise, or clock behavior.
- Change one control or a small related set. For example, edit a curve point without simultaneously changing several unrelated fan nodes.
- Apply and observe. Confirm that the displayed voltage, clock, power, temperature, and fan speed respond as expected.
- Test under a repeatable load. Use the same game, benchmark, or workload long enough to expose sustained behavior.
- Look for failure signs. Stop and revert if you see visual artifacts, stutter, crashes, driver recovery, excessive temperature, unexpected fan behavior, or a clock that repeatedly drops.
- Keep only a stable profile. Save a tested configuration in an Afterburner profile slot and retain a known-good default profile for recovery.
MSI’s Afterburner tutorial likewise frames adjustment as a process of applying settings, testing, and monitoring temperatures. A short successful launch is not evidence of all-load stability, and a lower temperature reading alone does not prove that performance or power behavior improved.
Troubleshooting controls that do not work
The voltage slider is missing
- Confirm that Settings > General > Unlock voltage control is enabled.
- Restart Afterburner if prompted.
- Check whether the card firmware or board design blocks voltage control; the unlock option cannot override that policy.
Voltage monitoring is unavailable
- Enable Unlock voltage monitoring under Settings > General.
- Understand that a sensor may still be unavailable or restricted by the GPU and driver.
- Do not substitute an unrelated reading and label it GPU core voltage.
The power or temperature range is different from a guide
That is expected across models. Afterburner displays the range exposed by the particular card. Do not copy another model’s percentages, temperature values, or profile file as if they were universal.
The fan curve has no effect
- Recheck that Enable user defined software automatic fan control is enabled under Settings > Fan.
- Click Apply and verify fan speed while GPU temperature changes.
- On a laptop, check for a manufacturer-controlled preset or firmware restriction; some systems do not permit a custom software curve.
The GPU becomes unstable after an edit
Click Reset or restore the saved known-good profile, then retest at defaults. If the system is unstable before Afterburner can be used, reboot and allow the driver to return to its normal state before applying a smaller change. Change fewer variables at a time so the cause is identifiable.

The reliable setting is the one your specific NVIDIA card accepts, remains stable with your workload, and keeps temperature, power, and noise within your own limits. MSI’s controls provide the mechanisms; firmware and testing determine the practical result.
