Start with the settings that affect visual comfort and camera control: camera shake, sway or bob, motion blur, automatic camera movement, and field of view. Next adjust look sensitivity in small increments, then choose hold or toggle behavior for sprint, crouch, auto-move, and other repeated actions. Because every game, platform, controller, and player is different, treat this as an inspection order rather than a universal preset.
Change one option at a time and test it during ordinary play. That approach shows which setting actually improves comfort or control without forcing you to relearn several controls at once.
1. Check camera movement and visual effects first
Camera behavior is the best first stop when a new game feels uncomfortable, visually busy, or difficult to follow. Look through Accessibility, Camera, Video, and Gameplay menus for controls that move the image independently of your character’s intentional input.

Turn screen or camera shake down, or disable it, if explosions, impacts, sprinting, landings, or weapon recoil make the view jump. A shake switch may cover only one effect, so test several situations after changing it. Microsoft’s accessibility guidance treats screen-shake disablement as a separate check from other camera-motion options.

Sway, bob, and head-bob effects
Sway and bob imitate the movement of a person’s head or body while walking, running, or turning. They can add atmosphere but may make text, targets, or the horizon appear to move constantly. If the game offers separate sliders for camera sway, head bob, or weapon sway, reduce them individually rather than assuming the shake option controls all of them.
Motion blur
Motion blur softens frames during rapid camera movement. Some players find it cinematic; others find it makes aiming, reading signs, or tracking enemies harder. Disable it or choose the lowest setting, then turn quickly in a familiar area to check whether the image is easier to read.
Forced and automatic camera movement
Search for camera follow, auto-center, automatic rotation, cinematic camera movement, or camera-relative movement options. These can rotate the view when you move, enter a vehicle, trigger an animation, or approach an object. Reducing camera rotation speed or disabling automatic behavior can make the camera obey your input more consistently.
Field of view
Field of view (FOV) determines how much of the scene is visible horizontally or vertically, depending on the game. A wider view can show more around your character but may make objects appear smaller or introduce edge distortion; a narrower view can enlarge the center of the image but may feel restrictive during movement. Change FOV only after checking the other motion effects, and adjust it gradually while walking, turning, and aiming.
Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 117 identifies field of view, camera movement, sensitivity, and related screen-motion settings as controls that help players who are susceptible to motion sickness, distracted by moving content, or who need more time to read. The exact names and locations vary by title.

2. Use a practical inspection checklist
Before launching into a long session, scan for these controls. They may be spread across several menus rather than grouped under “movement.”
- Camera shake or screen shake
- Camera sway, head bob, or weapon sway
- Motion blur and other motion effects
- Camera follow, auto-center, or automatic rotation
- Camera rotation speed
- Field of view or view angle
- Look, turn, and aim sensitivity
- Sprint, crouch, auto-move, and other hold/toggle behaviors
- Motion-reduction or motor-accessibility presets
Microsoft’s accessibility feature tags specifically encourage checking whether visual effects can be disabled and whether player-controlled camera motion can be reduced across all game modes. A setting that works in gameplay may not automatically apply to cutscenes, vehicles, menus, or multiplayer modes, so test the situations you expect to use.

Once the picture is stable, tune how quickly the view responds to your stick or mouse. Sensitivity is not a quality score and has no universally correct number. The useful value is the one that lets you turn, stop, and aim without fighting the controls.
Separate look and aim sensitivity
Many games provide one value for general camera movement and another for aiming down sights or using a precision mode. Set look sensitivity first while walking and turning. Then adjust aim sensitivity while tracking a nearby target. If the game offers separate horizontal and vertical values, change only the axis that feels wrong.
Use repeatable tests
- Stand in an ordinary gameplay area rather than an unusually open training room.
- Turn toward a fixed landmark and stop on it. If you repeatedly overshoot, lower sensitivity; if you cannot turn far enough without lifting your mouse or making several stick movements, raise it.
- Walk a short route containing corners, stairs, or doors. Check whether you can keep the view steady while moving.
- Track a moving character or object at normal combat distance. Tune aim sensitivity separately if the reticle feels too twitchy or too slow.
- Play for several minutes before making another change. A value that feels strange for the first few seconds may become comfortable, while a value that feels exciting can cause fatigue over time.
God of War Ragnarök, for example, exposes camera and aiming-related speeds alongside motion-reduction controls. Its menu demonstrates why “sensitivity” may mean several independent settings rather than one master slider. Do not copy a number from another game; scales, defaults, field of view, input devices, and frame rates differ.

4. Choose movement input behavior for comfort and reliability
After the camera responds predictably, inspect how movement actions are triggered. The key question is whether an action should require a continuous hold, one press to switch it on or off, or repeated presses.

Hold-to-sprint gives immediate release when you let go, which can help when a game uses sprint as a precise, temporary action. Toggle sprint reduces the time you must keep a button depressed and can be more comfortable during long travel. In a game with stamina, weapon restrictions, stealth, or context-sensitive actions, test toggle behavior carefully: the convenience of a persistent sprint can also make stopping or changing stance less predictable.
Crouch and stance controls
Toggle crouch can reduce hand strain during stealth or low-profile traversal. Hold crouch may be safer when standing up at the wrong moment would expose your character. Check whether the game supports separate crouch, slide, prone, or stand commands, and whether a toggle interacts with sprinting or jumping.
Auto-move and repeated presses
Auto-move can handle long, straight journeys without a continuous input. It is useful only when you can cancel it quickly and the game clearly indicates that it is active. Some accessibility systems also convert a held action into a toggle or turn multiple presses into a single press. Ubisoft’s accessibility guidance for Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope describes these kinds of alternatives, including changing hold actions to toggles and repeated presses to single presses.
Remapping and alternate layouts
If the default movement layout forces an awkward reach, remap the action before you build muscle memory. Prioritize sprint, crouch, jump, interact, dodge, and camera-reset commands—the actions you will use repeatedly or under pressure. Keep a distinct button for emergency actions when possible, and verify that the new layout does not create duplicate bindings or remove a required command.

5. Use accessibility presets as a starting point, not a final configuration
A motion-reduction or motor-accessibility preset can reveal a group of useful controls quickly. Far Cry 6, for instance, presents a motion preset alongside individual options for camera shake, motion effects, aiming, and sprinting. God of War Ragnarök includes a motor preset with sprint style and other input-behavior choices.
Presets differ by game. One may disable blur and shake but leave camera rotation unchanged; another may alter aiming, sprinting, or button behavior. Apply a preset, then open each affected menu and record what changed. Restore any control that conflicts with the game’s mechanics or your preferred layout.
6. A change-and-test workflow that avoids confusion
Changing everything at once makes it impossible to identify the cause of an improvement or a new problem. Use this sequence instead:
- Record the baseline. Note the original values or photograph the settings screen, especially if the game has no reset option for individual controls.
- Change one visual effect. Start with shake, sway, blur, automatic camera movement, or FOV—the effect that bothers you most.
- Test normal play. Walk, turn, climb, aim, enter combat, and view a cutscene if the game includes one.
- Keep or undo the change. Do not stack another adjustment until you know whether the first one helped.
- Adjust sensitivity. Move the slider one or two increments, repeat the same turning and aiming tests, and stop when control feels predictable.
- Change an input behavior. Try sprint or crouch toggle in a low-risk area, then test it during the situations where timing matters.
- Write down the final values. This is useful after patches, platform changes, or switching between controller and mouse.
Use ordinary gameplay for testing rather than a single cinematic moment. A setting can feel good while standing still but become distracting during traversal, combat, driving, or camera transitions.

7. What different games may expose
Official accessibility examples show a broad range of available controls. They are feature examples, not a ranking of games or a universal configuration.

PlayStation’s feature list for The Last of Us Part I illustrates how camera shake, motion blur, camera follow distance, field of view, and control schemes can coexist as independent choices. Ubisoft’s Far Cry 6 guidance similarly separates motion effects, camera shake, aiming, and sprinting. When a game offers a control, inspect its description rather than assuming it covers every related effect.
8. Troubleshooting common problems
The view still feels unstable after disabling shake
Reduce sway or bob, turn off motion blur, and check automatic camera rotation or follow behavior. Shake may be only one layer of movement. Test vehicles, cutscenes, and special abilities because they can use separate camera effects.
A wider FOV feels worse
Lower it gradually and check whether the game uses a horizontal or vertical FOV scale. A wider setting can make peripheral objects smaller or stretch the edges, so “more” is not automatically more comfortable.
Turning is comfortable but aiming is not
Use independent look and aim sensitivity if available. Lower the precision or aiming value without changing ordinary camera movement, then test different distances and target speeds.
Toggle sprint causes accidental movement
Check whether sprint remains active after releasing the stick, whether stamina cancels it, and whether another action cancels sprint. If timing becomes unreliable, return to hold-to-sprint or remap the command to a button you can release quickly.
Options disappear in a particular mode
Some games expose settings only in certain modes, editions, or platforms. Recheck Accessibility, Camera, Video, and Gameplay menus while in the affected mode, and consult the current in-game descriptions after updates. Do not assume a setting available in single-player applies to multiplayer or vehicles.
9. A quick decision guide
- Your main problem is nausea or visual discomfort: inspect shake, sway/bob, blur, automatic camera movement, and FOV before touching sensitivity.
- Your main problem is overshooting turns: lower look sensitivity in small increments and test fixed landmarks.
- Your main problem is imprecise aiming: tune aim sensitivity separately from general look sensitivity.
- Your main problem is hand fatigue: try toggle sprint, toggle crouch, auto-move, alternate layouts, or reduced repeated presses.
- You are unsure where to start: apply a relevant motion or motor preset, inspect every resulting option, and then test one change at a time.
10. The order to remember
Inspect camera shake and other visual motion first; adjust FOV only as needed; tune look and aim sensitivity separately; then choose hold, toggle, auto-move, and remapping options that fit the game’s mechanics and your hands. No setting number is universal, and an option’s name does not guarantee that it controls every related effect. A short, controlled test after each change produces a setup you can understand, reproduce, and revise when the game or your input device changes.
