Start at 1000 Hz. It is a sensible gaming baseline: the mouse reports once every 1 millisecond. If your mouse supports 2000 or 4000 Hz, try those settings and keep the higher rate only when your game remains smooth and frame times stay stable. Use 8000 Hz as an optional high-rate setting, not a requirement. It reports every 0.125 milliseconds, but it also creates more processing work and some older game engines handle it poorly.

Polling rate affects only the mouse-reporting portion of input latency. A shorter report interval does not reduce monitor scan-out, game processing, rendering, or display latency by the same amount. The right setting is therefore the highest rate your exact mouse, connection, computer and games can sustain without stutter.

What mouse polling rate means

Polling rate is the frequency at which a mouse sends movement and button data to the computer. It is measured in hertz (Hz), or reports per second. A 1000 Hz setting sends up to 1000 reports each second; 8000 Hz sends up to 8000.

The nominal report interval is calculated as 1 ÷ polling rate. These are arithmetic intervals, not independent latency-test results:

Polling rate Nominal report interval How to view it
500 Hz 2 ms Lower-load option when available
1000 Hz 1 ms Practical starting point for gaming
2000 Hz 0.5 ms Optional higher-rate experiment
4000 Hz 0.25 ms Optional higher-rate experiment
8000 Hz 0.125 ms High-rate mode that needs a capable setup

The interval describes how long the computer may wait between reports in the idealized polling schedule. It is not a promise that a click appears on screen in that time. USB transfer, the operating system, the game engine, CPU scheduling, rendering, display refresh and other parts of the input path still contribute to end-to-end latency.

Why a higher rate is not automatically better

The gain is limited to one part of the path

Moving from 1000 to 8000 Hz changes the nominal report interval by 0.875 milliseconds. That is a real change in the mouse-reporting interval, but it is not an equal reduction in total click-to-screen latency. If another stage of the system takes longer, that stage remains the limiting factor.

More reports require more processing

Higher rates create more input events for the computer and game to handle. Corsair warns that higher polling rates can increase CPU usage. Razer also cautions that some older game engines may not handle high-rate input well. A setting that looks faster on paper can therefore produce worse play if it causes frame-time spikes, hitching or instability.

Smoothness is the deciding test

Keep a higher rate only when mouse movement remains smooth, frame delivery is stable and the game does not become less responsive. If a game stutters after increasing the rate, the lower setting is the better setting for that game, even if its nominal interval is longer.

Which rate to choose by situation

Most gaming PCs: 1000 Hz

Set 1000 Hz first unless you already know your mouse and games behave well at a higher value. It is widely available on gaming mice and gives a 1 ms nominal report interval without making high-rate compatibility the first problem to solve.

Modern system with a compatible mouse: 2000 or 4000 Hz

Try 2000 Hz, then 4000 Hz, when the mouse exposes those steps and your game remains smooth. These settings reduce the nominal interval to 0.5 and 0.25 milliseconds respectively. They are optional improvements to test, not mandatory upgrades for every player.

8000 Hz enthusiast use

Use 8000 Hz when all of the following are true: the exact mouse supports it, the required wired connection or receiver is available, your CPU has headroom, and your games remain stable during real play. The 0.125 ms nominal interval is the shortest setting in the cited examples, but no manufacturer documentation establishes it as the measured optimum across games or systems.

Older games or a system showing stutter

Drop to 1000 Hz first. If the problem continues, test 500 Hz where the mouse offers it. A 500 Hz setting has a 2 ms nominal interval and can reduce input-event load. Do not treat the lower value as a failure; reliable, smooth input is more useful than a nominal number that causes hitching.

Check support before changing the setting

Polling steps differ by model, firmware and connection type. Confirm the specification for your exact mouse rather than assuming that a high number printed on a product family applies to every version.

  • Verify that the mouse itself lists the desired rate. The Razer Viper 8KHz, for example, lists 125, 500, 1000, 2000, 4000 and 8000 Hz steps.
  • Check whether high-rate operation requires a particular receiver, booster or wired USB connection.
  • Confirm that the receiver and mouse firmware are compatible if you use wireless mode.
  • Check the game and operating-system requirements before interpreting a setting as a performance gain.

The Sony MSE-G500 specifications provide one concrete example of model-specific support: 500, 1000, 2000, 4000 and 8000 Hz are listed, along with a 2.4 GHz dongle and a wired USB connection. ASUS describes its ROG Polling Rate Booster as an accessory for compatible ROG devices, so it should not be treated as a universal adapter for every mouse.

How to change polling rate and test it safely

  1. Identify the exact model and connection. Read the mouse manual or support page and note the available polling steps. If the mouse is wireless, identify whether the high-rate mode works through its standard receiver, a separate receiver or only by cable.
  2. Install or open the mouse configuration utility. Select the polling-rate control, often labelled Polling Rate, Report Rate or a manufacturer-specific name such as HyperPolling. If the mouse has onboard memory or a physical selector, use that documented control instead.
  3. Begin at 1000 Hz. Apply the setting and restart the game if it does not detect the change immediately. Record the setting so later comparisons are meaningful.
  4. Use a direct USB connection while testing wired high rates. Razer recommends connecting the Viper 8KHz directly to an available USB port rather than routing it through an untested hub. Close unnecessary background programs during the test so avoidable CPU activity does not confuse the result.
  5. Play the same demanding scenario. Use a repeatable match, training area or camera movement pattern. Watch for visible hitching, inconsistent cursor motion, input drops and frame-time instability rather than judging only by the number in the utility.
  6. Increase one step at a time. Test 2000 Hz, then 4000 Hz, and finally 8000 Hz if each previous level is stable. Changing one variable at a time makes it easier to identify which setting caused a problem.
  7. Keep the highest stable value. If the game becomes less smooth, return to the last stable setting. There is no benefit in retaining a higher rate that makes actual play worse.

Symptoms, causes and fixes

What you notice Likely explanation What to try
Stutter or frame-time spikes when moving the mouse The game or CPU is handling the extra reports poorly Reduce the rate to 4000, 2000 or 1000 Hz; close background programs and retest
High-rate option is missing The exact mouse, firmware or connection does not support it Check the model specification and required receiver or accessory
Wireless high-rate mode does not activate The standard receiver may not support that mode Use the documented compatible receiver, booster or wired connection
Performance changes between games Games use different input and engine implementations Choose a stable per-game setting rather than forcing one global maximum
No noticeable aiming improvement The report interval is only one part of total input latency Do not infer a problem from the lack of a visible difference; prioritize smoothness and consistency

Razer’s guidance for high-rate operation specifically recommends lowering the HyperPolling rate when game performance suffers and notes that older engines may not handle high polling well. That makes a downgrade the first troubleshooting step, not a sign that the mouse is defective.

Do you need 8000 Hz?

No. 8000 Hz is an option for a compatible setup, not a baseline requirement for gaming. It changes the nominal report interval from 1 ms at 1000 Hz to 0.125 ms, but the practical value depends on whether the game can consume the reports smoothly and whether the rest of the input path is already the larger source of delay.

Choose 8000 Hz when you specifically want to experiment with the shortest available report interval and your system remains stable under it. Choose 1000 Hz when you want a broadly compatible default. Choose 2000 or 4000 Hz when those settings are stable and you prefer to test an intermediate point. There is no controlled, cross-game manufacturer statistic establishing one of these rates as universally fastest or most accurate.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing report interval with total latency: 0.125 ms is not a complete click-to-screen measurement.
  • Assuming the highest number wins: CPU overhead and engine compatibility can outweigh the nominal interval reduction.
  • Testing only in a menu: A setting can appear fine in a low-load screen and stutter during a real match. Test the game scenario that matters to you.
  • Changing several settings at once: Altering polling rate, sensitivity, frame cap and graphics settings together prevents a clear comparison.
  • Assuming wireless and wired support are identical: Receiver requirements vary by mouse and mode.
  • Using a product-family specification as a guarantee: Confirm the exact model, firmware and included accessories.
  • Expecting a universal battery figure: The cited manufacturer material does not establish a controlled, cross-model battery-life statistic for different polling rates.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Set the mouse to 1000 Hz.
  2. Play normally and confirm that movement and frame delivery are stable.
  3. If the mouse supports it, test 2000 Hz without changing other settings.
  4. Continue to 4000 Hz only if 2000 Hz is smooth.
  5. Try 8000 Hz only when the exact mouse, receiver or cable and game support it.
  6. At the first sign of stutter, frame drops or instability, return to the last stable rate.

For most players, that process ends at 1000 Hz or a stable 2000–4000 Hz setting. The goal is not the largest number in the control panel; it is consistent input in the games you actually play.
