How to choose between the top picks
Choose Axatana for flexibility
The guide places Axatana in S tier as an option for both bosses and crowds. That breadth makes it a reasonable first trial if you want one moveset to handle different encounter types. It is not evidence that Axatana out-damages every alternative or suits every shell.

The guide also puts Axe & Dagger in S tier, emphasizing fast, multi-hit attacks and its availability as an early option. Consider it if you prefer to build pressure with quick sequences rather than wait for a heavy punish opportunity.

Keep an upgraded weapon that already works
The same guide lists The Iconoclast as a reliable all-round starter. If you have already invested in it and are comfortable with its timing, a higher tier label alone is not a reason to switch. Compare a new weapon against the one you have upgraded, including what you would need to spend to bring the alternative up to a useful level.
What changed after launch?
Cold Symmetry’s official Steam news feed documents post-launch weapon adjustments. Its Week 1 update says Obsidian Hammer received a balance pass and now hits substantially harder, Great Martyr’s Blade deals more damage, and Axatana’s weapon ability was adjusted. These notes establish that the weapons changed; they do not provide a complete comparative damage ranking.

Because the independent tier guide is dated August 24, 2026, check the latest official notes before treating its ordering as current. A patch can change how a weapon feels or performs without making every prior use-case description irrelevant.

- Start from your current setup. Note the shell, Tarstones, and upgrade state you are using; those can affect whether a weapon’s strengths suit your build.
- Try the candidate in the role you want it for. Test its reach, attack speed, multi-hit pressure, swing coverage, and how much commitment its attacks demand in a boss encounter or against a group.
- Compare it directly with your upgraded weapon. Judge the moveset and comfort you actually get, not just the candidate’s position in the guide.
- Decide whether the difference is worth the materials. Upgrade only after the new weapon’s handling and build fit give you a practical reason to change.
How much should you trust this tier list?
Official game, platform, and developer sources confirm release information, combat features, and patch changes. The specific weapon ordering comes from one independent fan guide, which says it cross-checks other launch-build lists and developer notes. Since only that guide and official patch material underpin the ranking here, confidence in the exact tier order is moderate, not definitive.
For scope, the official PlayStation listing describes more than 80 dungeons. That scale is another reason to think in terms of a weapon’s fit across the content you play, rather than assuming one ranking settles every encounter. The listing gives August 20, 2026 as the PS5 release date; Mortal Shell II is also available on PC and Xbox.
