For sharper monitor text, select the display’s resolution marked Recommended in Windows. If that makes text too small, increase Scale or Text size rather than lowering resolution. Then set brightness for the room, use Night light only when warmer evening colors feel more comfortable, select a refresh rate your monitor supports, and deal with reflections through monitor placement and room lighting. These controls solve different problems, so change one setting at a time.
What each monitor setting actually changes
“Sharper” and “more comfortable” are not the same display problem. Resolution determines how precisely letters and interface graphics are drawn. Scaling and text size determine how large those letters appear. Brightness and color settings affect visual comfort in a particular room, while refresh rate affects motion smoothness rather than static text detail. Reflections are caused by light reaching the screen and can require a physical change to the room or monitor position.
| Setting or adjustment | Primary purpose | What it does not fix |
|---|---|---|
| Recommended/native resolution | Text and image sharpness | Text that is physically too small |
| Display Scale | Larger interface elements at the correct resolution | Reflections or room brightness |
| Text size | Larger text, including for accessibility | Blurry text caused by a wrong resolution |
| Brightness | Screen luminance matched to the room | Low resolution or unsupported refresh rates |
| Night light | Warmer colors at selected times | Sharper text or higher resolution |
| Refresh rate | Smoother scrolling, pointer movement and inking | Static text detail at a given resolution |
| Monitor angle, room lighting or glare filter | Fewer reflections | Pixel-level sharpness |
The settings below apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11 labels as described by Microsoft Support. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so a Windows 10 computer should be treated as an unsupported operating system unless your organization has a separate support arrangement. Labels and available choices can vary with Windows updates, graphics drivers, monitor firmware, connection type and the monitor itself.
1. Select the recommended resolution first
Resolution is the first setting to check when letters look fuzzy, have colored fringes, or appear less crisp than expected. A flat-panel monitor has a physical pixel grid. Its native resolution is the one that maps the image most directly to that grid; Windows normally identifies the appropriate choice as Recommended.

Windows steps
- Open Settings.
- Choose System, then Display.
- If more than one monitor is connected, click the monitor you want to change.
- Expand Display resolution and select the option marked Recommended.
- When Windows asks whether to keep the change, choose Keep changes if the picture is correct.
Microsoft cautions that a monitor can accept resolutions below its native resolution, but “text won’t look as sharp and the display might be small, centered on the screen, edged with black, or stretched.” A lower setting can therefore make a desktop look worse even if it makes some items appear physically larger. Use scaling for size; do not use a lower resolution as a magnification tool.
If the expected resolution is missing
Do not assume the next lower option is the right fix. Check that the cable is firmly connected, that the monitor is connected to the intended graphics output, and that Windows has the correct graphics driver. A dock, adapter or older connection can limit the resolutions and refresh rates that Windows offers. Recheck the Display resolution list after correcting the connection or driver. If the monitor’s manual specifies a native resolution that Windows never presents, consult the computer or monitor manufacturer’s support documentation.
2. Make text larger with Scale or Text size
At the recommended resolution, menus and web pages may look too small on a high-density display. Increase their size without sacrificing the pixel mapping that keeps edges sharp.

Change overall interface size with Scale
- Open Settings > System > Display.
- Select the monitor you are adjusting.
- Under Scale & layout, open Scale.
- Choose a larger percentage, then check your usual applications.
Scale enlarges interface elements such as windows, buttons and menus. The available percentages depend on the display and Windows configuration. Some older applications may not respond perfectly until they are restarted, and a few may have their own zoom control that remains independent of Windows Scale.
Enlarge text separately
- Open Settings.
- Go to Accessibility > Text size.
- Move the text-size slider until sample text is comfortable to read.
- Select Apply.
Text size is useful when you want larger lettering without enlarging every control. Browser zoom, document zoom and an application’s own accessibility settings can still be adjusted for a particular task. Keep the recommended resolution while making these changes.
3. Set brightness for the actual room
There is no single brightness number that is comfortable for every monitor, workspace or time of day. A screen that is much brighter than its surroundings can feel harsh; one that is too dim can make you strain to distinguish details. Match the display to the light around you while viewing the type of content you normally use.

Where to change brightness
On a laptop or an all-in-one, Windows may provide a brightness control in Settings > System > Display or in the Quick Settings panel. Many external desktop monitors do not expose a Windows brightness slider. Use the monitor’s physical buttons or on-screen display (OSD) menu instead. The exact menu name varies by manufacturer; look for Brightness, Picture or a similar image control.
A practical adjustment method
- Display a page with normal black text on a light background, along with the applications you use most.
- Remove or reduce direct light shining onto the panel.
- Lower or raise the monitor brightness until the white background does not look like a glowing lamp and dark text remains easy to distinguish.
- Recheck the setting when the room changes substantially, such as in the evening or when sunlight enters through a window.
Brightness changes luminance; it does not restore detail lost through a low resolution. Avoid treating a brightness adjustment as a substitute for selecting the recommended resolution.
4. Use Night light for color comfort, not sharpness
Windows Night light shifts the display toward warmer colors. Some people prefer that appearance in the evening, especially when a cool white screen feels uncomfortable. It is an optional color preference, not a resolution or focus setting, and it can change how photographs, video and other colors appear.

Turn Night light on or schedule it
- Open Settings > System > Display.
- Turn on Night light, or open its settings to adjust the strength.
- Use the schedule options for sunset-to-sunrise or choose custom hours.
If you work with color-sensitive material, turn Night light off while judging colors. If the warmer cast is distracting or does not feel comfortable, there is no requirement to use it. Text will not become sharper when Night light is enabled.
5. Choose a supported refresh rate
Refresh rate is the number of times per second the display can update. A higher supported rate can make scrolling, pointer movement and pen inking look smoother. It does not replace the correct resolution and does not by itself improve the static detail of a letter.

- Open Settings > System > Display.
- Select the monitor you want to configure.
- Open Advanced display.
- Under the refresh-rate control, choose a rate that the monitor supports at the current resolution.
- Confirm the change, then return to the Display page and verify both refresh rate and resolution.
Available rates depend on the monitor, graphics hardware, cable, adapter and resolution. Some combinations are not supported. Windows may change the resolution when you select a rate that cannot operate with the current one, so check both values after every refresh-rate change. If the screen goes blank or the picture becomes unstable, wait for Windows to revert the setting or use the recovery option presented on screen, then choose a supported combination.

6. Reduce reflections before buying an accessory
Reflections can make text difficult to read even when resolution, scaling and brightness are correct. Start with the free changes recommended in digital-eyestrain guidance: adjust the monitor angle, alter room lighting and use display settings to reduce the amount of reflected light.
Change the monitor and room
- Turn the screen so windows and bright lamps are not reflected directly in it.
- Use blinds, curtains or a shade to control strong daylight behind you or beside the monitor.
- Move a lamp or use indirect lighting rather than placing a bright source in front of the panel.
- Tilt the monitor slightly if its surface is catching a ceiling light.
- Clean dust and fingerprints from the panel with the method specified by the monitor manufacturer; smears can scatter light.
When a glare filter makes sense
The American Optometric Association names a glare filter as an option for decreasing reflected light. It is not required for every workspace and is not a sharpness upgrade. If you buy one, measure the visible screen area and match the filter to the monitor’s dimensions and mounting method. A poorly sized filter can cover part of the image, interfere with a webcam or bezel, or introduce its own texture. Treat the filter as a solution for remaining reflections after positioning and lighting have been addressed.
Change settings in a controlled order
Changing several controls at once makes it difficult to know what helped. Use this sequence and pause after each adjustment:

- Increase Scale or Text size if the correct-resolution image is too small.
- Set brightness for the current room and task.
- Choose a supported refresh rate if motion looks uneven.
- Enable Night light only if warmer colors are more comfortable for the time of day.
- Remove reflections by changing the monitor angle and room lighting before considering a filter.
Test each change with the same text-heavy tasks: a web page, an email or document, and the applications you use for work. A setting that looks good on a bright afternoon may need a different brightness at night, while resolution and Scale usually remain stable.
Common symptoms and the setting to check
| Symptom | First check | Likely next action |
|---|---|---|
| Letters look fuzzy or stretched | Display resolution | Select the option marked Recommended; check cable and graphics driver if it is missing. |
| Everything is sharp but too small | Scale and Text size | Increase Scale for the interface or use Accessibility > Text size for lettering. |
| The screen feels glaring in one room | Brightness and reflected light | Adjust the monitor OSD and reposition the display or light source. |
| Colors look unusually orange | Night light | Reduce its strength, change its schedule or turn it off when accurate color matters. |
| Scrolling looks choppy | Refresh rate | Select a supported higher rate and verify that resolution did not change. |
| Text is hard to see because of bright patches | Reflections | Change angle and room lighting; consider a correctly sized glare filter only afterward. |
Limits of these adjustments
These controls cannot correct every display problem. A damaged panel, faulty cable, unstable graphics driver, failing adapter or application-specific rendering issue may require hardware or software support. Display-specific color calibration, professional photography or video workflows, and medical concerns about persistent discomfort are outside these general Windows steps. If discomfort continues despite sensible brightness, glare and text-size changes, take breaks and seek appropriate professional advice rather than continually increasing brightness or changing resolution.
Monitor menus, Windows labels and available refresh-rate combinations can change with software, drivers, hardware and connection type. Use the monitor’s manual for controls that Windows does not expose, and verify the final resolution and refresh rate after connecting a dock, adapter or second display.
