Choose the edition that matches your device and the people you want to play with. On Windows, the Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition bundle includes both, so you can launch the one your friends use. Mac and Linux players should choose Java Edition; console and mobile players use Bedrock Edition. If your group plays across Windows, consoles, and phones or tablets, Bedrock is the shared option. Java and Bedrock do not join one another’s standard multiplayer games.
Which Minecraft edition should you buy for your device?
The practical starting point is platform compatibility, not a contest over which edition is “best.” Minecraft offers Java Edition for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Bedrock Edition is the version used on Windows, consoles, and mobile devices. Windows is the overlap: its Java & Bedrock PC bundle gives players access to both editions.

| Windows PC, with Java friends or an interest in Java mods and servers | Java Edition | Launch Java from the PC bundle. It is the edition associated with community mods and third-party Java servers. |
| Windows PC, with console or mobile friends, controller input, or Marketplace content in mind | Bedrock Edition | Launch Bedrock from the PC bundle for the Bedrock multiplayer network and Bedrock features. |
| Mac or Linux | Java Edition | Java is the supported native edition for these platforms; the Windows bundle does not make Bedrock available as a native Mac or Linux edition. |
| Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, iPhone or iPad, or Android device | Bedrock Edition | These console and mobile platforms use Bedrock. |
| Family seeking local split-screen on a console | Bedrock on a supported console | Minecraft’s current comparison lists split-screen for console Bedrock, not Java. Check the particular console’s current store listing for its details. |
| You have not checked which edition your friends launch | Ask before buying or joining | Find out whether they use Java or Bedrock; owning both on Windows does not let one edition join the other’s ordinary sessions. |
The Windows bundle is useful when your plans change or your friends are split between editions: you can select the appropriate one at launch. It does not merge the two editions. A Windows player who starts Java still needs Java-playing friends; starting Bedrock is the route to a Bedrock group. If you are buying specifically to join a friend, confirm the edition they actually launch rather than relying on the shorthand “Minecraft on PC.”
For Mac and Linux, the choice is simpler because Java is the supported edition on those platforms. Console and mobile buyers likewise choose Bedrock for their device. A Windows PC owner can choose between the two based on the group and features, but that flexibility is not the same as cross-play between editions.

Can you play Minecraft cross-platform?
Cross-play follows the edition’s network. Bedrock is the choice for a group combining Windows with supported consoles or mobile devices. Java multiplayer connects Java players on Windows, macOS, and Linux. The fact that a person is on a PC does not by itself tell you which group they can join: a Windows player can launch either edition, while a Mac or Linux player uses Java.
Minecraft’s official store FAQ, accessed in 2026, describes Bedrock cross-play across Windows 10 and Windows 11, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, PS4, and mobile. Availability and supported platform generations can change, so confirm current compatibility for the specific device in the Minecraft store information. In particular, do not assume that a Java player can join a Bedrock friend simply because both are playing Minecraft. Minecraft’s official Java/Bedrock guide puts it plainly: “This means that Java and Bedrock players can’t play together – so make sure to ask your friends which version they have.”
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That edition boundary is the key to avoiding a frustrating purchase or setup. A Windows buyer who receives both editions still has to start the one that matches the intended session. A Bedrock phone player and a Java PC player do not become compatible just because both use Microsoft accounts or have the same game title. For Java cross-play, the PC, Mac, and Linux players need to be using Java; for the mixed Windows-console-mobile group, use Bedrock on supported devices.
Before joining a friend’s game
- Ask which edition they launch. “Minecraft on PC” is not specific enough: a Windows player might be running Java or Bedrock.
- Match the edition. Use Java for a Java session and Bedrock for a Bedrock session.
- Use the latest release. Minecraft’s multiplayer guidance recommends that players use the latest release.
- Check the connection. A stable internet connection is needed for online play; a local network can be used for a local game.
- Check accounts and permissions if access fails. Console and mobile play uses a Microsoft account, and a child account needs multiplayer permissions enabled.
If an online console player cannot use multiplayer, check the console platform’s online-play subscription as well as the game edition and account settings. Minecraft’s current support guidance lists Xbox Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus, and Nintendo Switch Online as requirements for online console multiplayer. These subscriptions are sold separately from Minecraft; the exact terms are set by each platform. The subscription does not change which edition your group needs: it is an additional console online-play requirement, not a way to connect Java to Bedrock.
For a local network game, check that players are on the same network and using the matching edition. For an online game, check the release, connection, account sign-in, and any child-account permissions alongside edition compatibility. If you have confirmed those basics and a console player still cannot access online multiplayer, review the current subscription requirement for that console platform.

Java mods and servers versus Bedrock Marketplace content
Choose Java if your main interest is the community-created mod and third-party server ecosystem associated with that edition, and you are comfortable managing that ecosystem. “Mods” here means community additions for Java, not a set of files that can automatically be moved into Bedrock. Java and Bedrock content and worlds should not be assumed to transfer freely between editions.

It also means your choice needs to match the people and server you plan to join: a Java server is not the same as a Bedrock session. If you do not need that ecosystem and mainly want to play with friends on a console or phone, Bedrock is likely the more direct fit.
Bedrock offers Minecraft Marketplace content, character customization, and add-ons. Marketplace content is purchased or accessed through Microsoft’s in-game store, and Minecoins are associated with Bedrock content. Those add-ons are not interchangeable with Java mods. Pick based on the type of customization you want and the edition your multiplayer group uses, rather than assuming that content bought or installed for one edition will carry over to the other.
Marketplace content and Minecoins are optional Bedrock content, not a requirement for playing the base game or joining friends. Likewise, the existence of Java mods does not mean a player must install mods to play Java. Treat each ecosystem as edition-specific and check that any content is intended for the version and edition you use.
Controls and playing together on one console
Bedrock supports controller input, which can suit console play and Windows players who prefer a controller. Mobile Bedrock also supports touch controls. Minecraft’s official store FAQ, accessed in 2026, states: “Minecraft: Java Edition does not have native controller support at this time.” A controller is not a prerequisite for Bedrock; it is an input option. Java players who want controller input should not mistake the lack of native support for a claim that every possible third-party approach is impossible.

For a family that wants several players sharing one console, the official edition comparison lists split-screen for console Bedrock and not for Java. The specific console’s current store details are the right place to check how the feature applies to that device. This is a separate decision from online cross-play: local split-screen is about playing together on the console, while cross-play is about joining players on other devices.
Input preference can help settle a Windows buyer’s choice when cross-play does not decide it. If you want controller support or Marketplace access, Bedrock is the relevant option; if you want Java’s community mods and server ecosystem, Java is the one to launch. On mobile, Bedrock’s touch controls let you play on the device without requiring a separate controller purchase.
PC memory requirements: Java and Bedrock
Mojang Studios’ current PC store page, as accessed in 2026, lists these memory requirements. They are published requirements, not benchmark results or a guarantee about performance on every machine.
| Edition | Minimum memory listed | Recommended memory listed |
|---|---|---|
| Java Edition | 8 GB with a discrete GPU; 12 GB with integrated graphics | 16 GB |
| Bedrock Edition | 4 GB | 8 GB |
Use the figures as a first compatibility check, not as a direct speed ranking. The Java minimum differs depending on whether the PC has a discrete GPU or integrated graphics. Before buying or installing, compare the current official requirements with the actual configuration of your computer, including its memory and graphics hardware. Requirements can change, and meeting a minimum does not mean every world, setting, or added community mod will run the same way.
For example, a PC with integrated graphics should be compared with Java’s listed 12 GB minimum rather than the 8 GB figure that applies to a discrete GPU. The page lists 16 GB as the recommended memory for Java, while Bedrock lists 4 GB minimum and 8 GB recommended. Those figures can help you check basic fit, but they do not establish that one edition will run faster on every computer. Check the current store page before making a decision because published system requirements can change.

Realms, private multiplayer, and subscriptions
If you want a private hosted world rather than a public server or a game hosted by a friend, choose the Realms service for the edition you play: Java Realms is for Java, while Bedrock Realms Plus is for Bedrock. They are not a bridge between the editions. Minecraft’s current store comparison lists Realms as supporting up to 10 friends at a time. Treat that as a current product detail, not a permanent rule about Minecraft multiplayer; check the live product information for present terms.
Console online multiplayer has a platform subscription requirement: Minecraft’s current support page names Xbox Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus, and Nintendo Switch Online. That requirement concerns online console multiplayer; it is distinct from choosing a matching Minecraft edition. Console and mobile players also use a Microsoft account, and child accounts need multiplayer permissions enabled. If a child cannot join, check the account’s permissions rather than repeatedly changing editions.

Realms and Realms Plus are optional services for private hosting, not prerequisites for all multiplayer. You can also play through a friend’s hosted game or use other multiplayer options appropriate to your edition. If you choose a Realm, make sure it corresponds to the edition the group will use; the “up to 10 friends” detail is the current store comparison’s stated capacity, not a promise that terms will never change.

- Windows? The PC bundle includes Java and Bedrock; launch the edition that fits your friends or the features you want.
- Mac or Linux? Choose Java.
- Console or mobile? Choose Bedrock for that device.
- Playing with a mixed-device group? Use Bedrock across Windows, console, and mobile; Java is the choice for Java players on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
- Want Java community mods and servers? Choose Java and plan to use its community ecosystem.
- Prefer Marketplace add-ons, touch controls, or controller support? Choose Bedrock.
- Unsure what a friend has? Ask whether they launch Java or Bedrock before you buy or set up a session.
Those answers resolve the purchase decision for most players. There is no universal winner: the edition that works is the one compatible with your platform and the people you want to play with. Before purchasing, verify the edition your friends use and, on PC, check the current hardware requirements. Console buyers should also account for their platform’s online subscription if they plan to play online.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get both Java and Bedrock Edition?
On Windows, the Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition PC bundle includes both editions, and you can launch either one. They remain separate editions with separate multiplayer networks, so you still need to start the edition your friends use. The Windows bundle does not provide Bedrock as a native edition for Mac or Linux; those platforms use Java.
Best Value
Can you play Minecraft cross-platform?
Yes, when players use the same edition on supported devices. Bedrock is the cross-play choice for Windows, supported consoles, and mobile; Java multiplayer connects players on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Java and Bedrock players cannot join one another’s ordinary multiplayer sessions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhich Minecraft edition should I buy for a Mac or Linux computer?
Choose Java Edition. Minecraft lists Java for macOS and Linux; Bedrock is not offered there as a native edition.
Do I need a subscription to play Minecraft online on console?
Minecraft’s current support guidance lists Xbox Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus, and Nintendo Switch Online for online console multiplayer. These platform subscriptions are separate from buying Minecraft. Check the current terms for your platform.
Does Java Edition support controllers, and can Bedrock be played on mobile with touch controls?
Minecraft’s official store FAQ says Java does not have native controller support at this time. Bedrock supports controller input, and mobile Bedrock supports touch controls. A controller is optional, not required to play Bedrock.
Can Java mods or Bedrock Marketplace add-ons transfer between editions?
Do not assume so. Java community mods and Bedrock Marketplace content and add-ons belong to different edition ecosystems and are not interchangeable. Choose the edition that supports the content you want.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Buy or launch Bedrock for console, mobile, and Windows-to-console/mobile cross-play; choose Java on Mac or Linux, or on Windows if you want Java mods and Java servers. Windows buyers get both editions in the Java & Bedrock bundle, but Java and Bedrock still cannot join each other’s normal multiplayer sessions. Ask friends which edition they use before buying, and check current PC requirements or console online-subscription terms where relevant.
