For the current macOS 27 generation, Apple Intelligence works on Apple-silicon Macs, but the chip is only one part of eligibility. Your Mac also needs the appropriate macOS release, matching language settings, enough available storage, and a region where Apple enables the features.
Hardware requirement: Apple silicon M1 or later
Apple’s current requirements identify Macs with an Apple silicon chip, starting with M1, as the supported class for Apple Intelligence on macOS 27. This includes M1, M2, M3, M4 and later Apple silicon generations, across supported MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac mini, Mac Studio and Mac Pro configurations. Apple does not list Intel Macs as compatible with the current Apple Intelligence requirements.
Model names and purchase years are not reliable eligibility tests. Two MacBooks sold in nearby years can use different processors, and only the chip shown in macOS determines which hardware class you have. To check yours, choose Apple menu > About This Mac:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- If the panel has a Chip entry such as “Apple M1” or “Apple M3 Pro,” it is an Apple-silicon Mac. The number must be M1 or newer.
- If it has a Processor entry naming an Intel Core processor, it is an Intel Mac and is outside Apple’s current supported class.
Apple’s requirements page also lists a MacBook Neo with an A18 Pro in a broader cross-device eligibility list. That does not change the Mac-computer rule above: for conventional Mac models, look for Apple silicon M1 or later rather than assuming every Apple-branded computer qualifies.

Which macOS version do you need?
Apple’s minimum depends on whether you mean the current feature generation or the first release of Apple Intelligence for Mac. Treat these as two different reference points:
| Feature generation | macOS requirement | What the requirement means |
|---|---|---|
| Current generation covered by Apple’s 2026 requirements | macOS 27 | Apple’s current support article lists Apple-silicon Macs, M1 or later, for this generation. Feature availability can still vary by language and region. |
| Initial Mac availability | macOS Sequoia 15.1 or later | Apple records this as the release in which most Apple Intelligence features first became available on supported Mac models. |
Sequoia 15.1 is therefore a historical baseline, not a promise that every feature available in macOS 27 exists on that older release. Apple changes feature sets, language coverage and regional access over time. If you are checking a Mac today, use the macOS 27 requirements for the current generation and update to the newest release offered for your model.

Storage and unified-memory requirements
Apple describes on-device storage allowances rather than a single permanent download size. Its current support material lists:
| Mac category | Apple-listed storage figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Other compatible devices | Up to 8 GB | This is Apple’s stated allowance for other eligible devices; the amount can change with software and feature updates. |
| Certain Macs with M3 or later | Up to 14 GB | Applies to specified M3-or-newer Macs with at least 12 GB of unified memory. |
These figures refer to storage used for Apple Intelligence resources on the device. They are not a claim that every compatible Mac always consumes the maximum amount. Apple can revise the space required as models and features change, so leave more free space than the listed allowance when possible and check the current support page before a major upgrade.
The 12 GB unified-memory condition is attached to Apple’s “up to 14 GB” Mac category; it is not a general statement that every M1-or-later Mac must have 12 GB of memory to qualify. Apple’s published requirement does not provide a separate minimum-memory figure for every supported Mac configuration.

If space is tight, remove or move large files before installing a macOS update. Do not interpret a storage warning as proof that the processor is unsupported: hardware eligibility and available disk space are separate checks.

Language settings must match
Apple Intelligence requires the language used for the Mac and the language used by Siri to be the same supported language. Changing only one of them can prevent setup or limit which features appear.
Apple’s current list includes:
- English
- Danish
- Dutch
- French
- German
- Italian
- Norwegian
- Portuguese
- Spanish
- Swedish
- Turkish
- Vietnamese
- Simplified Chinese
- Traditional Chinese
- Japanese
- Korean
Apple warns that individual features can differ by language and region, so a supported language does not guarantee that every function is available in the same form. Review the language-specific notes in Apple’s Use Apple Intelligence on your Mac guide.
To check the pairing, open System Settings > General > Language & Region to see the Mac’s primary language, then open System Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri and inspect Siri’s language. Set both to the same supported language, then return to the Apple Intelligence panel. If you intentionally use different languages for daily work and Siri, you may need to choose one supported matching pair before enabling the feature.
Region and purchase-location restrictions
Compatibility is not worldwide or determined by the Mac alone. Apple’s current support article describes restrictions for supported devices purchased in mainland China. It also describes conditions for devices bought elsewhere that depend on where the user is located and which country or region is associated with the Apple Account.

That means two identical Apple-silicon Macs can show different availability when they are used in different countries, or when one was purchased in a restricted market. Apple’s rules can change, so check the live requirements page for your purchase location, current location and Apple Account region rather than relying on a model-year list.
When a feature is unavailable because of region, changing the Mac’s display language will not necessarily resolve it. Confirm the account and location conditions first, and do not treat a missing Apple Intelligence switch as evidence that the Mac’s chip is incompatible.
How to check and turn on Apple Intelligence
- Identify the chip. Choose Apple menu > About This Mac. Confirm that the Chip field shows Apple silicon M1 or later.
- Check the macOS release. In the same window, note the version. If an update is offered, open System Settings > General > Software Update and install the latest release supported by the Mac.
- Review available storage. Open System Settings > General > Storage. Make room if the Mac cannot accommodate the on-device Apple Intelligence resources or the macOS installer.
- Align languages. In System Settings > General > Language & Region, choose a supported primary language. In System Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri, set Siri to that same language.
- Enable the feature. Open System Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri and turn on Apple Intelligence. Follow any on-screen setup instructions.
- Recheck availability. If the control is still missing, compare the Mac’s purchase location, current region and Apple Account region with Apple’s current regional conditions.
Apple’s Mac user guide recommends updating macOS to access the latest available capabilities. The labels above reflect Apple’s current System Settings paths; Apple may adjust wording in later releases.

What to do when Apple Intelligence is not offered
Work through the checks in this order so that a software or settings issue is not confused with an unsupported Mac:
Best Value
- LEAN. MEAN. M3 MACHINE — The blazing-fast MacBook Air with the M3 chip is a superportable laptop that sails through work and play.
- PORTABLE DESIGN — Lightweight and under half an inch thin, so you can take MacBook Air anywhere you go.
- GET MORE DONE FASTER — The powerful 8-core CPU 8-core GPU of the Apple M3 chip keep things running smoothly.
- UP TO 18 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — Amazing, all-day battery life so you can leave the power adapter at home.
- A BRILLIANT DISPLAY — The 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display supports 1 billion colors.
- About This Mac shows Intel: The Mac is outside Apple’s current supported hardware class. Updating macOS does not turn an Intel processor into Apple silicon.
- The Mac has M1 or later but an older system: Install the applicable macOS update, then return to System Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- The switch is present but setup will not complete: Verify that the device language and Siri language are identical and supported.
- Only some tools are visible: Check the language and region notes. Apple states that features can vary by language and location even on eligible hardware.
- A regional message appears: Review where the Mac was purchased, where it is being used and the Apple Account region against Apple’s current support conditions.
- Storage warnings appear: Use System Settings > General > Storage to free space, then retry the macOS update or Apple Intelligence setup.
If all checks pass but the interface still differs from Apple’s documentation, compare the installed release with Apple’s current support page. Requirements are version-sensitive, and the settings shown in a later macOS release may not exist on an earlier one.
Apple Intelligence versus the Siri AI beta
Apple Intelligence is the broader set of system features. Apple’s separate Siri AI beta has its own requirements and should not be used as a synonym for Apple Intelligence.
Apple’s How to get Siri AI page specifies macOS 27 and Apple-silicon requirements for the beta. It also requires matching supported device and Siri language settings, says the beta is initially available in English, and applies additional regional limits, including conditions for mainland China and the European Union.
Recommended Free Tools
Consequently, a Mac can meet the general Apple Intelligence requirements while a particular Siri AI beta capability is unavailable because of language, region or beta rollout status. Check the Siri AI page separately whenever the question concerns the new Siri experience rather than Apple Intelligence features generally.
Do you need a new Mac?
Start with the chip check, not the Mac’s age or appearance. An Apple-silicon Mac that meets the current macOS, language, storage and regional conditions does not need a replacement solely to use Apple Intelligence. The normal path is to update macOS, align the settings and enable the feature.
An Intel Mac cannot satisfy Apple’s current M1-or-later hardware requirement. In that case, software updates and language changes cannot add Apple Intelligence support. A hardware change becomes relevant only if these features are important to you; Apple’s requirements do not call for a special accessory, repair part or external device.
Before buying anything, record the exact chip shown in About This Mac, the macOS version in use, the available storage, and the language and region settings. That four-part check prevents an unnecessary upgrade when the real problem is an outdated system, an unmatched Siri language or a regional restriction.
