No macOS setting turns a MacBook’s built-in display into a touchscreen. If you mean making a MacBook easier to operate or read, the most useful options are Accessibility > Pointer Control for trackpad behavior, trackpad settings for tap-to-click, and Accessibility > Zoom for enlarging the screen. They address different tasks, so choose the one that matches what feels difficult.
Can you enable touchscreen input on a MacBook?
No. The settings below help with the trackpad, pointer, and visibility; they do not add touch input to the built-in display. Apple’s MacBook Air specifications describe a Liquid Retina display and Force Touch trackpad, while the touchscreen criterion in Apple’s conformance document for the MacBook it covers is marked “Not applicable.” That document applies to the model covered, not every possible external accessory. Which setting should you change?

These settings are not interchangeable: Pointer Control changes how you operate the pointer, Tap to click changes how the trackpad registers a click, and Zoom enlarges content.

Open Apple menu > System Settings > Accessibility > Pointer Control. The available controls can vary by Mac. Depending on your setup, you may be able to adjust double-click speed or open Trackpad Options for scrolling, inertia, scroll speed, and dragging behavior. - If double-clicking is unreliable, adjust double-click speed.
- If scrolling feels too fast or continues longer than you want, explore the scrolling and inertia controls in Trackpad Options.
- If dragging is difficult, review the available dragging options and choose a style that suits your movements.
Change one control at a time, then try it in the app or task where you noticed the problem. This makes it easier to tell whether the adjustment helped without disrupting other familiar actions.
Turn on Tap to click
If pressing the trackpad is uncomfortable or takes more effort than you want, enable Tap to click in the Mac’s trackpad settings. Tap to click applies to the trackpad: you tap its surface to register a click. It does not make the display respond to taps.

Zoom in to read or inspect screen content
Go to Apple menu > System Settings > Accessibility > Zoom. Apple documents keyboard shortcuts, a trackpad gesture, and a modifier-key scroll gesture for zooming. Its guide describes the trackpad gesture as a three-finger double tap and drag. Choose a zoom style based on how much of the screen you want magnified: Full Screen enlarges the display view, while Split Screen or Picture-in-Picture magnifies a smaller area. Zoom is useful when content is too small to read or inspect; it does not change pointer or trackpad behavior. Review the controls in Zoom settings to select the activation method and view style that work best for you.
