What are the best keyboards for Mac? It depends on whether you value Touch ID, a full-size layout, a compact budget option, an ergonomic-style bundle or mechanical gaming features. Macworld’s comparison names five options for those different needs; its judgments are review opinions, not results from independent testing for this guide.
At a glance: which Mac keyboard fits your needs?
| Keyboard | Best suited to | Key trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Magic Keyboard with Touch ID (USB-C) | Mac users who want Apple’s Touch ID integration | Touch ID has Mac compatibility limits; keys are not backlit |
| Logitech MX Keys S for Mac | Productivity, a number pad and illuminated keys | Backlighting shortens Logitech’s stated battery estimate |
| Logitech POP Icon Keyboard | A compact, lower-cost keyboard for several devices | Cramped layout, no backlighting and replaceable AA batteries |
| Logitech Signature Comfort Plus Combo MK880 | Buyers who want a curved keyboard and bundled mouse | Mouse is right-handed only; the set uses replaceable batteries |
| Lemokey L1 HE | Mac gaming and mechanical-keyboard customization | Heavy, premium-priced and limited to a US layout in Macworld’s review |
1. Apple Magic Keyboard with Touch ID (USB-C): the Apple-integrated choice
Choose this if Touch ID on the keyboard is a priority and your Mac supports it. Apple’s USB-C model is wireless and rechargeable, and Apple includes a USB-C charge cable. Apple specifies macOS 15.1 or later for this model; Macworld says Touch ID works only with Macs using Apple silicon. Check your particular Mac and macOS version before buying—having a Mac-compatible keyboard does not by itself guarantee Touch ID support. Apple’s technical specifications identify this as a 2024 model and estimate “about a month or more” between charges. That is Apple’s estimate, not an independent measurement. Apple describes it as delivering “a remarkably comfortable and precise typing experience”; that is the manufacturer’s characterization, not independent evidence of comfort.
Macworld lists the lack of backlighting and higher price as drawbacks. If you often type in dim rooms, consider a backlit alternative instead.
2. Logitech MX Keys S for Mac: a full-size productivity keyboard
This is the most suitable of the five if you want a number pad, backlit keys and a dedicated Mac layout. Macworld describes its function-key customization and full-size design. Logitech lists smart illumination and programmable keys, and says the keyboard can pair with up to three Apple devices over Bluetooth Low Energy, switching between them with a button. Details are on Logitech’s MX Keys S for Mac page.
#1 Best Overall
- Magic Keyboard delivers a remarkably comfortable and precise typing experience.
- It’s also wireless and rechargeable, with an incredibly long-lasting internal battery that’ll power your keyboard for about a month or more between charges.
- It pairs automatically with your Mac, so you can get to work straightaway.
- It features a USB-C port and includes a woven USB-C Charge Cable that lets you pair and charge by connecting to a USB-C port on your Mac.
Logitech’s battery-life estimates, as reported by Macworld, are up to five months without backlighting and around 10 days with backlighting used continuously. These are manufacturer estimates under different lighting conditions, not independent test results. If you want a smaller footprint, the MX Keys Mini for Mac omits the number pad. Logitech’s US page showed a time-limited sale price when accessed; prices and offers change, so check the current price and your local layout rather than treating a discount as standard.
3. Logitech POP Icon Keyboard: a compact budget pick
Macworld names the POP Icon its budget pick. Its compact size and ability to connect to up to three devices make it worth considering if desk space and multi-device switching matter more than a full-size layout. Macworld describes the keys as quiet and contoured, but also finds the layout somewhat cramped.
Rank #2
- WIRELESS, RECHARGEABLE CONVENIENCE — Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad connects wirelessly to your Mac, iPad, or iPhone via Bluetooth. And the rechargeable internal battery means no loose batteries to replace.
- WORKS WITH MAC, IPAD, OR IPHONE — It pairs quickly with your device so you can get to work right away.
- ENHANCED TYPING EXPERIENCE — Magic Keyboard delivers a remarkably comfortable and precise typing experience. Its extended layout features document navigation controls for quick scrolling and full-size arrow keys. The numeric keypad is ideal for spreadsheets and finance applications.
- GO WEEKS WITHOUT CHARGING — The incredibly long-lasting internal battery will power your keyboard for about a month or more between charges. (Battery life varies by use.) Comes with a Lightning to USB Cable that lets you pair and charge by connecting to a USB port on your Mac.
- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS — Requires a Bluetooth-enabled Mac with macOS 10.12.4 or later, an iPad with iPadOS 13.4 or later, or an iPhone or iPod touch with iOS 10.3 or later.
There is no backlighting, and the keyboard uses replaceable AA batteries rather than rechargeable power. Macworld reports Logitech’s claim of up to 36 months of battery life; that is a manufacturer claim, not an independently verified duration. Consider whether you prefer replaceable cells or charging before choosing it.

Macworld includes this set as a lower-cost customizable option. Its keyboard has a curved layout and integrated wrist rest, connects over Bluetooth and can pair with up to three devices. It makes most sense if you want a matched keyboard-and-mouse bundle and the included mouse suits your hand.
Rank #3
- Magic Keyboard is available with Touch ID, providing fast, easy and secure authentication for logins and to unlock your Mac.
- Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad delivers a remarkably comfortable and precise typing experience.

- The numeric keypad is also ideal for spreadsheets and finance applications.
- It’s wireless and features a rechargeable battery that will power your keyboard for about a month or more between charges.
The set is wireless-only and uses replaceable batteries. Macworld describes the mouse as right-handed only, which makes the bundle a poor fit if you need a left-handed mouse or want to choose your pointing device separately.
5. Lemokey L1 HE: a specialized mechanical option for gaming
Macworld selects the Lemokey L1 HE as its Mac gaming pick. Its 75% layout retains a function row while leaving out the number pad, and it uses magnetic Hall effect switches with customization options and Mac and Windows layouts. This is the specialized choice for someone seeking a mechanical, gaming-oriented keyboard—not the default recommendation for general office typing.
Rank #4

Macworld’s review notes substantial weight, no height adjustment, a US-only layout and a premium price. Check the layout and desk setup carefully if those constraints matter to you.

Check compatibility before paying for a special feature
For the Magic Keyboard with Touch ID, verify both the Apple silicon requirement and Apple’s macOS 15.1-or-later requirement for the USB-C model. For other keyboards, basic typing compatibility does not guarantee that every vendor app, programmable key or special feature works with every macOS version.
Best Value
- Magic Keyboard is available with Touch ID, providing fast, easy and secure authentication for logins and to unlock your Mac.
- Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad delivers a remarkably comfortable and precise typing experience.

Match the layout to your work and desk
- Choose a full-size layout if you regularly use a number pad; the MX Keys S for Mac has one.
- Consider a compact board if saving desk space matters more than having every key. The POP Icon is compact, while the MX Keys Mini for Mac leaves out the number pad.
- The L1 HE’s 75% layout keeps a function row but has no number pad.
Think about typing feel, lighting and power together
The Magic Keyboard, MX Keys S and POP Icon are low-profile choices; Macworld describes the POP Icon’s keys as quiet. The L1 HE offers a different, mechanical Hall effect design. Typing feel is personal, so no one style is objectively best. Backlighting can help in dim settings but affects the MX Keys S battery estimate. Rechargeable power, replaceable AA cells and the Magic Keyboard’s Apple-stated charge estimate involve different maintenance trade-offs.
Verify the details that vary by region or over time
Prices, discounts, stock and layout variants can change. Check the current seller listing for the exact model, local key layout and included accessories. Treat battery duration as a manufacturer estimate that depends on use, not as a guaranteed result.
