There is no reliable, publisher-verified list of Mac games that render natively at 3840×2160 on Apple-silicon Macs. Apple-silicon Macs can run many Mac games and, on supported models, send a 4K signal to an external display. Those facts do not prove that a particular game renders internally at 4K or maintains a specific frame rate.
To answer the question accurately, you must check three separate things for every title: a Mac and Apple-silicon build, an in-game 3840×2160 option (or documented equivalent), and a test on specified hardware, settings, macOS and display connection.
What “4K on a Mac” actually means
People use “4K” to describe several different parts of the display pipeline. Keeping them separate prevents the most common mistake: treating a 4K monitor signal as proof that a game is rendering every frame at 3840×2160.
4K output from macOS
The Mac’s graphics hardware and port determine whether macOS can drive an external display at 3840×2160, and at which refresh rate. Apple’s HDMI documentation lists up to 4K at 240 Hz for some newer Mac models and up to 4K at 60 Hz for other specified Mac families. The limit is model-specific and also depends on the connection path.

Resolution rendered by the game
A game can render at 1920×1080, 2560×1440 or another internal resolution while macOS outputs a 3840×2160 signal. The monitor will report 4K input even though the game’s image was produced at a lower resolution.
Upscaled or reconstructed 4K
Apple describes MetalFX as an upscaling technology: it can create a higher-resolution output from a lower-resolution source. A game using MetalFX may look close to 4K while using less GPU work than native 3840×2160 rendering. Unless the developer documents the internal and output resolutions, call this upscaled or reconstructed output, not native 4K.
What the available Mac-game evidence establishes
The available official material confirms Mac gaming and Apple-silicon compatibility for some titles, but it does not provide a title-by-title 4K certification. These examples show how to read the evidence without overstating it.
| Evidence | What it confirms | What it does not confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Steam requirements for Baldur’s Gate 3 | Apple M1 is listed as the minimum Mac processor/graphics; Apple M1 Pro or better is recommended. The listing specifies macOS 14.7.1 or newer, with 8 GB minimum and 16 GB recommended memory. | No 4K mode, native-rendering claim or frame-rate result. |
| Apple’s current Mac-gaming editorial | Titles such as Frostpunk 2, Stray and Resident Evil 4 are presented as Mac games, with Game Mode and other Mac features discussed. | No game-specific confirmation that any of those titles renders at 3840×2160. |
| Apple’s macOS Sonoma announcement (2023) | It named DEATH STRANDING DIRECTOR’S CUT, Stray, Fort Solis, World of Warcraft: Dragonflight, HUMANKIND, Resident Evil Village, The Medium, ELEX II, Firmament, SnowRunner, Disney Dreamlight Valley, No Man’s Sky, Dragonheir: Silent Gods and Layers of Fear as Mac titles at that time. | It does not establish that every title remains available, runs natively on Apple silicon or offers 4K rendering today. |
| Apple Silicon Games community library | User-submitted compatibility and performance reports can help identify games worth investigating. | Community reports are not publisher certifications. They do not prove universal 4K support unless they record resolution, hardware, settings and reproducible measurements. |
Why a fixed “Mac games that support 4K” list would be misleading
Game support is not one binary capability. A title may have a native Apple-silicon build, run through Rosetta, or be unsupported on macOS. Its graphics menu may expose 3840×2160, restrict resolution by display mode, or rely on dynamic resolution. A patch can also change available settings or performance.
Minimum requirements only establish that the publisher intends the game to run under a stated baseline. They do not promise a particular resolution or frame rate. Baldur’s Gate 3 illustrates this distinction: its Apple-chip and memory requirements establish Mac compatibility, while the listing says nothing about a 4K mode.
Even when a game offers a 3840×2160 selector, the result depends on the chip, unified-memory capacity, macOS version, graphics preset, upscaling mode, scene complexity and refresh target. A result measured on an M3 Max cannot be presented as the experience on an M1 MacBook Air.

How to verify a game before calling it 4K-compatible
Use the following process for each title. Record the evidence instead of inferring support from the monitor’s information panel.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall- Confirm the Mac release. Check the current publisher or storefront requirements for a macOS version and supported processor. Classify the game as native Apple silicon, Intel-only but Rosetta-compatible, or unsupported. Note the minimum macOS release exactly; for example, the Baldur’s Gate 3 listing requires macOS 14.7.1 or newer.
- Inspect the game’s graphics settings. Look for a display-resolution entry that explicitly offers 3840×2160. Also record whether the game uses MetalFX, another upscaler, dynamic resolution or a resolution scale below 100 percent. A 4K desktop mode selected in macOS is not a substitute for this check.
- Document the test machine. Write down the exact chip tier, memory amount, Mac model and macOS build. “Apple silicon” alone is too broad to reproduce a result.
- Document the display chain. Record the monitor’s native resolution and refresh rate, the Mac port, cable and any adapter or dock. Apple advises checking adapter specifications for supported resolutions and other details.
- Use a repeatable graphics preset. Record every relevant setting, including preset, texture quality, shadows, ray tracing, upscaling quality, frame-rate cap and vertical sync. If the game has a built-in benchmark, use it; otherwise measure the same scene or route each time.
- Measure rendered and output resolutions separately. Note the game’s selected render resolution or scale and the signal reported by macOS or the display. A 3840×2160 output with a 67 percent render scale is not native 4K.
- Record performance and date. Report an average or measured frame rate with the test method, not a guess based on requirements. Include the game version and test date because updates can alter results.
If any of these pieces is missing, the defensible label is 4K support not confirmed, rather than “supports 4K” or “does not support 4K.”
Connecting an Apple-silicon Mac to a 4K display
First identify the exact Mac model, because HDMI capabilities differ across generations. Apple documents some newer built-in HDMI configurations at up to 4K/240 Hz and other Mac families at up to 4K/60 Hz. Those figures are output limits, not game benchmarks.
Prefer a direct connection for demanding modes
Apple’s guidance is: “For best results, connect displays directly to your Mac.” For the models listed for 4K at 240 Hz over built-in HDMI, Apple says adapters are not supported for those resolutions and refresh rates and recommends a direct connection. A USB-C or Thunderbolt adapter, dock or switch can impose a lower ceiling even when the Mac itself supports the target mode.
Check every link in the chain
- Mac port capability and model-specific display limit.
- Adapter or dock specification, if one is used.
- Cable bandwidth and connector type.
- Monitor input mode and selected refresh rate.
- macOS display settings and the game’s own resolution menu.
A monitor that accepts 4K cannot create 4K frames when the Mac, adapter or game is operating below that resolution.

Apple-silicon performance features that affect 4K play
Apple says Game Mode on Apple-silicon Macs prioritizes game CPU and GPU use and reduces the impact of background tasks. It can improve consistency, but it is not a certification of 4K performance for any title.

MetalFX can trade internal resolution for a higher-resolution output. This may be the practical way to target a 4K display on a demanding game, but the article or test should identify it as upscaled output. Native rendering and MetalFX output answer different questions: the former concerns the game’s internal workload; the latter concerns the final image sent to the display.
Unified memory also matters. A game that lists 8 GB as a minimum and 16 GB as recommended, as Baldur’s Gate 3 does, still may need lower settings at 4K on a machine near the minimum. Requirements are not a promise that the recommended memory level sustains a chosen frame rate.
How to publish or evaluate a trustworthy per-game result
For a useful comparison, keep the columns below separate. This prevents an Apple marketing feature, a storefront requirement and a user benchmark from being presented as the same kind of evidence.
| Field | Record |
|---|---|
| Mac release / Apple silicon | Native Apple-silicon build, Rosetta-compatible Intel build or unsupported; cite the current publisher or storefront requirement. |
| 4K output option | Whether the Mac build exposes 3840×2160 or a documented equivalent in its own settings. |
| Rendering method | Native scale, MetalFX or another upscaler, dynamic resolution, and the selected scale percentage. |
| Test hardware and software | Exact Mac model and chip, memory, macOS version, game version and test date. |
| Display connection | Port, cable, adapter or dock, monitor model and selected refresh rate. |
| Observed result | Internal/rendered resolution, output resolution, graphics preset and measured frame rate with the measurement method. |
When a row cannot be supported by a current publisher document or reproducible test, mark it “4K support not confirmed.” Do not fill the gap with a monitor specification or a minimum requirement.

The monitor says 3840×2160, so the game must be native 4K
Why it happens: the display reports the signal it receives, not the game’s internal render resolution.
Fix: check the game’s resolution and render-scale controls, then record both internal and output values.

A game appears in an Apple Mac-gaming feature, so it must support 4K
Why it happens: Apple’s editorial pages highlight Mac availability and features such as Game Mode, not a universal resolution certification.
Fix: treat the feature as evidence of Mac availability only and verify 4K in the game’s documentation or a reproducible test.
An adapter prevents the desired refresh rate
Why it happens: adapters and docks have their own bandwidth and mode limits.
Fix: check the adapter specification, try a direct connection where Apple recommends it, and confirm the monitor’s input mode.
A community report is treated as an official guarantee
Why it happens: user reports are easy to find but often omit settings, patches or measurement methods.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix: use Apple Silicon Games as a lead, then verify the report includes chip, memory, macOS, resolution, settings and repeatable performance before drawing a narrow conclusion.
A practical decision rule
- Call it native 4K: the Mac build is supported, the game explicitly renders at 3840×2160 (100 percent scale), and a dated test records the hardware, settings and result.
- Call it upscaled 4K: the game renders below 3840×2160 and uses MetalFX or another reconstruction method to output 4K.
- Call it 4K output only: macOS and the connection produce a 3840×2160 signal, but the game’s internal resolution is unknown or lower.
- Call it unconfirmed: the available listing establishes Mac compatibility but provides no game-level 4K setting or reproducible measurement.
Using these labels lets readers distinguish a supported Apple-silicon Mac game from a verified native-4K result, without turning a display capability into a promise about game rendering.
