There is no universal set of must-have Mac apps: the right choice depends on what you want macOS to do better. These eight candidates cover launching apps, managing windows and the menu bar, screenshots, system monitoring, clipboard history, tasks, RSS reading and writing. Treat them as a shortlist to investigate, not as eight apps verified for the final macOS 27 release.

Apple’s developer materials describe macOS 27 as a beta and say the release is planned for this fall. Apple has also said macOS 27 will be the last release to support Rosetta for most Intel-only apps on Apple silicon. Check each app’s developer requirements and release notes before installing it on macOS 27, especially if you rely on Rosetta.

Eight apps, matched to the job you need done

The August 2026 roundup that identified these candidates is a source for category ideas, not a compatibility test or a neutral ranking. It does not establish that every app below supports the final macOS 27 release. Choose only the tools that fill a gap in your workflow.

App Task Consider it if…
Raycast App launcher You want a dedicated launcher and are willing to check its current plan and feature details.
Rectangle Window management You want keyboard shortcuts or snap areas to move and resize windows.
Ice Menu bar You want an additional tool for managing the menu bar.
CleanShot X Screenshots You need a dedicated screenshot app beyond the built-in options.
Stats System monitoring You want a system-monitoring utility.
Maccy Clipboard You want a dedicated clipboard tool.
Things 3 Tasks You want a separate task-management app.
NetNewsWire RSS reading You follow feeds and want an RSS reader.

The roundup also names iA Writer as a writing app, Fantastical as a calendar app and FeedsBar as a news app. FeedsBar is identified by that publisher as its own product, so its inclusion there is a pitch rather than independent validation. These names, like the eight above, are starting points—not evidence of macOS 27 compatibility.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Two picks with more specific support information

Rectangle for window management

Rectangle’s official site describes moving and resizing windows with keyboard shortcuts or snap areas. It lists the app as free and open source, with stated support for macOS 10.15 and later on Intel and Apple silicon. That minimum-version statement is not a guarantee of compatibility with the final macOS 27 release. The site also describes a Pro edition with quicker snapping and custom shortcuts. Consider it if window placement is a regular friction point; skip it if macOS’s built-in window tools already meet your needs.

Raycast for launching apps

Raycast’s changelog records version 2.6 on October 5, 2026, including fixes that refer to macOS 27. That shows active development and attention to macOS 27, but it is not a complete compatibility certification for the final release. Raycast’s August 2026 version 2.0 notice says Dictation and AI Chat became Pro features after beta; signing in provides a seven-day Pro trial without a credit card. Check the current plan details before relying on a feature or deciding to pay.

Check compatibility before moving to macOS 27

Apple’s September 1, 2026 developer notice says macOS 27 is the final release to support Rosetta for Intel-only apps on Apple silicon. Apple notes an exception for certain older, unmaintained games using Intel-based frameworks. Its September 22 support instructions say Rosetta is available on Apple silicon Macs running macOS 27 or earlier; starting with macOS 28, its functionality is limited to certain older, unmaintained games.

  1. Check the app’s architecture. In Finder, select the app and choose File > Get Info. Apple’s instructions explain how to identify whether an app is Intel, Universal or Apple silicon.
  2. Look for a current developer update. Check the developer’s system requirements and release notes for an explicit macOS 27 statement and a Universal or Apple silicon version.
  3. Decide whether to install or wait. If the developer has not confirmed support, do not assume the app will work correctly with the final release just because it runs on an earlier macOS version or has a macOS 27-related fix.

Apple recommends that developers add Apple silicon support so users are less likely to be interrupted by system notifications. For Mac users, the practical takeaway is to prefer a current Universal or Apple silicon build over depending on Rosetta indefinitely.

Choose selectively, not by list length

Start with the task that causes the most friction, then check whether a candidate’s current features, licensing and system requirements fit your Mac. The available information does not establish consistent current pricing or final-release compatibility across all eight apps, so neither should be assumed from this shortlist. If a tool overlaps with a built-in macOS feature you already like, there is no reason to install it just to complete the list.
