To see which apps on your Mac connect to the internet, use a network monitor that attributes connections to processes and shows their destinations. A connection map can make that activity easier to explore, but it does not reveal what encrypted traffic contains or prove why an app connected. The headline’s claim of a personally built map with “zero telemetry” cannot be independently substantiated without the underlying capture method and records, so this guide focuses on what Mac users can verify for themselves.
What a Mac connection map can—and cannot—tell you
A connection record can identify an app or process and a destination; depending on the tool, it may also show whether the connection is incoming or outgoing. A map adds a geographic visualization of destinations. For example, Little Snitch Mini describes a live connection list, traffic diagrams, and an animated worldwide map, while LuLu alerts identify a process and destination. Little Snitch Mini LuLu
These are views of connection metadata, not a transcript of the data sent. A destination’s location, an unfamiliar domain, or a high connection count is not by itself evidence of tracking or malicious activity. Encryption can prevent a monitor from showing the contents of a session; the map’s location is a visualization, not an explanation of purpose.

Whether a connection is expected depends on the app, its features, and what you were doing at the time. A map is useful for deciding what to investigate, not for deciding guilt on its own.

Choose a monitor based on what you need to do
Monitoring and blocking are distinct jobs. A monitor helps you observe activity; a firewall can also let you prevent selected connections. The tools below differ in whether they provide a live list or visualizations, whether they block, and what their product pages currently state about compatibility.

For visibility without blocking, Private Eye is a straightforward monitor, while Little Snitch Mini’s free tier adds diagrams and a map. For blocking unknown outbound traffic, LuLu offers a free firewall; Radio Silence describes app-level blocking, and Little Snitch Mini reserves blocking for premium features. The best fit depends on whether you want a simple list, visual summaries, or control over connections.

Understand incoming and outgoing connections
An outgoing connection starts from an app on your Mac and reaches another system. An incoming connection is initiated from elsewhere toward your Mac. Set up observation without overreacting
Start with a monitor if you only want to inspect
Open a monitoring app and observe activity while using your Mac normally. Private Eye tracks new connections while it is open; its app filter and direction filter can narrow the view. Little Snitch Mini provides a live list plus diagrams and a map. These views help associate activity with apps, but they do not establish the purpose or contents of a connection.
Use LuLu when you also want outbound blocking
- Download LuLu from the Objective-See product page and follow its installation guide.
- When macOS asks, approve LuLu’s System Extension and Network Filter in system settings. Labels and the precise approval path may vary by macOS version; consult the current installation instructions.
- Choose the startup behavior with care. LuLu’s default configuration can allow Apple and already-installed programs without alerts, which reduces initial prompts. Different startup choices can make the first session noisier.
- When an alert appears, review the process and destination before allowing or blocking. If you are unsure, identify the app and investigate its expected behavior rather than treating an unfamiliar destination as proof of wrongdoing.
LuLu’s update check can be disabled; Objective-See says that check sends no user or product information. A VirusTotal request is generated only if you click the alert’s VirusTotal button. These statements apply to those specific functions, not to every possible network behavior of every app on the Mac. Objective-See’s LuLu documentation

Interpret a destination before blocking it
- Check which process made the connection and whether it corresponds to an app you were using.
- Look at the destination and timing in context. Updates, synchronization, sign-in, and app features can all require network access.
- Do not infer intent from a domain name, an IP address, a map location, or the number of connections alone.
- If you decide to block, consider what could stop working—such as updates, sync, sign-in, or a feature that relies on the connection—and be ready to reverse the rule if needed.
LuLu documents a hostname-rule limitation: hostname blocking applies to connections made through Network.framework or NSURLSession. For browsers that do not use those frameworks, its documentation says IP-based blocking is supported instead. A hostname rule therefore may not cover every connection from every browser. macOS’s Local Network privacy permission controls whether a program may interact with devices on your local network. Apple says the system asks for permission on first access. This is a privacy control for local-network interaction, not a complete list of every connection an app makes to internet servers. Apple TN3179: Understanding Local Network Privacy
