There is no single lab-certified “best” Mac antivirus for every user. In AV-TEST’s June 2026 macOS Tahoe test, seven of nine products earned full marks across protection, performance, and usability. AV-Comparatives’ 2026 review assessed a different set of products and criteria, while editorial rankings also disagree: Macworld names Intego ONE its top pick and TechRadar names Bitdefender. Treat those as separate kinds of evidence, then choose according to the protection and features you actually need.
macOS already includes layered malware defenses, so a paid antivirus subscription is optional for many people rather than a requirement. A third-party product can add another layer or useful controls, but the best fit depends on the tested edition, feature scope, usability, and current subscription terms.
Do Macs need antivirus software?
Macs can get malware, but Apple already builds several defenses into macOS. Apple says the App Store, Gatekeeper, and notarization help prevent malware from launching; Gatekeeper, notarization, and XProtect help block it; and XProtect can remediate malware that has executed. Apple describes XProtect as built-in antivirus technology for signature-based detection and removal, with automatic security updates and behavioral analysis. Apple explains these protections here.

A third-party antivirus is an additional layer, not a replacement for macOS protections or careful behavior. It may appeal if you want broader real-time monitoring, web or phishing controls, centralized management, or bundled tools. AV-Comparatives also recommends keeping software patched, maintaining backups, and being cautious with links and copied Terminal commands. No antivirus can guarantee protection from every threat or prevent data loss in every situation.
What do the 2026 Mac antivirus lab results show?
Independent labs test specific software versions on particular systems using their own methods. A high score is useful evidence about that test, not a guarantee for future releases, every Mac configuration, or every type of threat.
AV-TEST: June 2026
AV-TEST evaluated nine home-user products on macOS Tahoe during June 2026, using current product versions and allowing updates and cloud services. It assessed malware detection, false positives, and performance. Each of its three categories—protection, performance, and usability—is scored out of six. Seven products received 6/6 in all three categories. ESET and F-Secure earned full protection and usability marks, with 5.5/6 for performance.

These marks apply to the named versions in that test. They do not establish that one product is always faster or more effective on every Mac.
AV-Comparatives: 2026 review
AV-Comparatives reviewed nine products on patched macOS Tahoe, using product versions current in April and May 2026. Its evaluation included Mac malware and potentially unwanted programs, plus installation experience, interface, alerts, performance, and usability. The products covered were Avast One Free for Mac 26.4, AVG AntiVirus Free for Mac 20.7, Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac 10.3, CrowdStrike Falcon Enterprise for Mac 7.36, ESET HOME Security Essential for macOS 9.0, Intego ONE Complete 1.2, Kaspersky Premium for Mac 26.0, Norton AntiVirus Plus for Mac 26.3, and Trellix Endpoint Security (HX) for Mac 36.30.
AV-Comparatives used 1,500 recent, representative malicious Mac samples in its procedure and cautions that this is a small sample count compared with Windows. The sample count describes that test, not the total number of Mac threats in circulation. The review provides a separate evidence point from AV-TEST; its product list and evaluation should not be treated as a direct replication of AV-TEST’s scoring.
Which Mac antivirus products are worth shortlisting?
The following are candidates to compare, not a universal ranking. The lab evidence applies only to the exact editions and versions named, and feature descriptions do not mean that the products offer equivalent protection.

Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac: a strong all-round comparison candidate
Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac 10.3 appears in both 2026 lab sources and earned 6/6 in all three AV-TEST categories in June. AV-Comparatives describes the paid product as including malware and ransomware protection, a limited-data VPN, browser security extensions, chat protection, and multiple scan options. Consider it if those controls fit your needs, then check the current edition and subscription terms before buying.
Intego ONE: a Mac-focused suite option
AV-Comparatives reviewed Intego ONE Complete 1.2, describing it as a paid Mac security application combining malware protection, a firewall, system optimization, and VPN. Macworld names Intego ONE its top pick in its 2026 editorial guide. That is Macworld’s judgment, not a lab consensus or a score directly comparable with AV-TEST’s results.

Norton: check the edition name before comparing
AV-TEST gave Norton 360 26.6 full marks in all three categories. AV-Comparatives reviewed Norton AntiVirus Plus for Mac 26.3 and describes malware protection, network threat prevention, and scam protection. These are different product edition names; do not assume that the tested edition or its features are interchangeable. TechRadar names Bitdefender its top Mac antivirus, illustrating that editorial rankings differ from Macworld’s Intego choice.

Free products: verify what the free tier includes
AV-Comparatives reviewed Avast One Free for Mac 26.4 and AVG AntiVirus Free for Mac 20.7. AV-TEST’s June report lists Avast One and AVG Antivirus under different product names. These entries show that free choices were included in lab coverage, but they do not establish the current feature limits, supported versions, or whether a free tier is sufficient for your needs. Check the vendor’s current terms before installing.

Start with evidence for the exact Mac product and edition you might install, then weigh day-to-day usability and features. AV-TEST directly scores protection, performance, and usability; AV-Comparatives also reports on potentially unwanted programs, installation, interfaces, and alerts.
- Protection evidence: Check which independent Mac-specific tests include the product, the version tested, the macOS release, and test date.
- False positives and usability: Consider whether the software distinguishes clean files reliably, presents alerts clearly, and can be installed without confusing setup.
- Performance: Read the lab’s measured result in the context of its operating system and test configuration rather than assuming it predicts performance on your particular Mac.
- Coverage: Decide whether you want web or phishing controls, ransomware features, browser extensions, or detection of Windows malware on shared drives.
- Bundle value: A VPN, firewall, identity or scam features, and cross-device coverage matter only if you will use them. More components do not automatically make a suite a better fit.
- Price and renewal: Compare the current introductory and renewal prices, subscription duration, device count, cancellation terms, and any free tier. These details can change and are not established by the lab results above.
Is free antivirus for Mac good enough?
It can be a reasonable starting point if the product’s current free tier provides the protection and controls you want. The 2026 AV-Comparatives review included free Mac editions of Avast and AVG, but lab coverage alone does not tell you which features a free plan currently includes or whether its limitations suit your use. Check the present feature list and terms, and do not assume a paid bundle is necessary just because it offers more tools.

Only if you want and will use the VPN. A VPN is a separate privacy tool, not proof of stronger malware detection. AV-Comparatives describes Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac as including a limited-data VPN and Intego ONE Complete as including a VPN, but the report’s feature descriptions do not establish that their limits, capabilities, or terms are the same. Compare the current VPN details separately from the antivirus lab results.
