The author’s practical shortlist assigns a different local language model to each job: Qwen 3.6 27B for serious coding, Gemma 4 12B for everyday questions, gpt-oss-20b for deeper reasoning, and a community Llama 3.3 8B variant for creative writing. That is a personal, task-based selection—not proof these are the four best models for every user. Your results depend on your hardware, model quantization, runtime, context length, and workload.
What this shortlist is based on
The “20+” in the original headline refers to the author’s claimed experience trying more than 20 local models. It is not a controlled benchmark sample, and the available account does not provide comparable test scores or measured tokens per second for the four picks.
A secondary summary reports that the author ran the models with KoboldCpp on a system with 32 GB of RAM, an RTX 5070, an Intel Core Ultra 9, and a 1 TB SSD. It also estimates that the four quantized GGUF model files take about 43–45 GB of combined storage. Those figures are reported setup context, not independently verified measurements; the exact GPU variant, quantization files, inference settings, context length, and GPU offload are not specified. The file total describes disk storage, not memory needed to load all four models at once.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

A model that feels responsive on one setup may run differently on another, and a model’s suitability for a task is not established by its parameter count alone.

The four models and the jobs they suit
Qwen 3.6 27B for serious coding
The author’s coding pick is Qwen 3.6 27B, intended for work such as debugging and refactoring. If coding is your main reason for running a model locally, try it on representative tasks from your own projects: for example, ask it to explain an error, propose a focused change, or review a refactor. The available summary does not establish a coding benchmark, a specific quantization, or a speed figure, so treat the recommendation as the author’s experience rather than a guaranteed result.
Gemma 4 12B for everyday assistance
Gemma 4 12B is the author’s everyday all-rounder for routine questions and general assistance. This role may suit someone who wants one model for varied, ordinary prompts rather than optimizing for a specialized task. Whether it is a better fit than a coding- or reasoning-oriented option depends on the questions you ask and how well it runs on your system.

Windows 11 Pro, performance-mode switching, Wake-on-LAN and auto power-on support flexible workstation use.
gpt-oss-20b for deeper reasoning
The author keeps gpt-oss-20b for more involved reasoning and problem solving. OpenAI’s August 5, 2025 announcement describes it as having 21 billion total parameters, with 3.6 billion active per token, and says it supports context lengths up to 128k. OpenAI states that its native MXFP4 release requires 16 GB of memory. These are vendor-published specifications, not independent comparative benchmarks; actual performance depends on the runtime and hardware.
Context capacity is not the same as a promise that every setup can use the maximum length smoothly. Longer prompts also have practical memory implications, so test the context sizes your work requires rather than assuming the published maximum will be comfortable on your machine.

A community Llama 3.3 8B variant for creative work
For creative writing and brainstorming, the author uses a community variant based on Llama 3.3 8B. The available account does not identify the exact third-party variant or its download and quantization details. Do not confuse this recommendation with a claim that the variant is Meta’s official Llama release. For writing, judge it on the kind of output you need—such as generating alternatives, developing a scene, or helping overcome a blank page—rather than assuming the same model will suit every style.
Choose by task and available hardware
| Your main need | Author’s pick | What to check before settling on it |
|---|---|---|
| Coding, debugging, or refactoring | Qwen 3.6 27B | Try it on real code tasks and check whether its output quality and responsiveness work for your setup. |
| Routine questions and general assistance | Gemma 4 12B | Test the range of everyday prompts you expect to use, not just a single example. |
| More involved reasoning and problem solving | gpt-oss-20b | Consider the runtime, available memory, and context length you need; OpenAI’s native MXFP4 release has a stated 16 GB memory requirement. |
| Creative writing and brainstorming | Community Llama 3.3 8B variant | Identify the particular community model and test whether its style fits your work. |
Before installing several models, check four constraints: available system RAM, GPU memory and the runtime’s ability to offload work to the GPU, the memory cost of your intended context length, and free disk capacity for model files. The reported 43–45 GB combined footprint for this four-model set is a secondary estimate, not a requirement to keep every file or load every model together. An external SSD is one optional way to store additional model files; it does not make a model more capable or faster.

A practical way to build your local model set
- Pick your primary job. Start with the model role that most closely matches what you will actually do—coding, general assistance, reasoning, or creative work.
- Choose a quantized file your system can run. Confirm the file’s storage size and the runtime’s memory requirements, including how much GPU offload and context you plan to use.
- Test representative prompts. Compare outputs on your own tasks and note both usefulness and responsiveness. Do not treat one short prompt as a universal evaluation.
- Add another model only for a distinct need. A second model earns its place when it gives you a useful alternative for a different task, not merely because it is available to download.
Can KoboldCpp run and switch between multiple local models?
KoboldCpp is the runtime named in the secondary summary of the author’s setup. The account supports that it was used in this setup, but it does not document exact configuration steps or establish a universal switching workflow. If you use it, check its current model-loading behavior and the requirements of each model file; running one model does not mean all installed files are simultaneously loaded into memory.
