You can use several LLM APIs without paying within their currently documented free allocations, but none of the reviewed providers promises that its free tier is permanent or will remain unchanged. Google Gemini API, Cloudflare Workers AI, and Groq each offer free usage with different limits and conditions. Check the live terms for your account and chosen model before relying on a quota in an application.
Which LLM APIs have a free tier?
As of documentation reviewed on October 7, 2026, Google Gemini API, Cloudflare Workers AI, and Groq document free API access or free allocations. These are current offers, not evidence of a permanent contractual guarantee. Limits, eligible models, pricing, and account requirements can change.
| Provider | What the reviewed documentation says | Where to check your applicable limits |
|---|---|---|
| Google Gemini API | Limited free access is available for certain models and eligible offerings. Google says AI Studio usage is free of charge in available regions. Free-tier content may be used to improve Google products; paid-tier content is not used for that purpose. Google Gemini API pricing | Google directs developers to AI Studio for active limits. Limits vary by usage tier and can change. Google rate limits |
| Cloudflare Workers AI | Cloudflare’s pricing documentation, last updated October 1, 2026, says Workers AI is included in Free and Paid Workers plans. The free allocation is 10,000 Neurons per day, resetting at 00:00 UTC. On Workers Paid, usage above the allocation costs $0.011 per 1,000 Neurons. Certain named models require a paid billing method. Cloudflare Workers AI pricing | Check the model’s Neuron usage and whether it requires a paid billing method; request counts depend on the workload and model. |
| Groq API | Groq documents free-tier limits by model, with request and token caps over periods such as a minute or a day. Limits apply at the organization level. Groq rate limits | Exact limits are in account settings. The documentation describes its public list as a high-level summary. |
How much free API usage will you actually get?
There is no useful universal quota across these services. Google limits vary by model and usage tier, and Google points users to AI Studio for their active limits. Groq’s caps are model- and organization-specific. Cloudflare counts Neurons rather than a fixed number of requests, so the number of calls that fit within its daily allocation depends on the model and workload.

Before you build around a free allocation, verify the exact model, project or organization, region, and account tier you plan to use. A quota shown for one model or account should not be assumed to apply to another.

What happens when you reach a free limit?
- Groq: The API returns HTTP 429 when a rate limit is exceeded. Its documentation says upgrading to the Developer plan offers higher limits and additional features. Groq rate limits
- Cloudflare: Further operations fail if the limit is exceeded. On Workers Paid, usage above the 10,000-Neuron daily allocation is billed at the documented rate of $0.011 per 1,000 Neurons. Cloudflare Workers AI pricing
- Google: The reviewed documentation explains that rate limits govern request volume over time and vary by tier; it directs users to AI Studio for current limits. It does not establish a single universal quota or a single response to every limit being reached. Google rate limits
Design your application to handle rejected or delayed requests rather than assuming free access will always be available. For example, decide whether to retry later, show a clear error, or let the user switch to a separately configured provider. Avoid automatic retries that repeatedly send requests while a limit is still in effect.
What should you compare before choosing?
- Model access: Confirm the model you need is included for your account and available in your region.
- Usage ceiling: Find out whether limits count requests, tokens, or provider-specific units, and whether they apply per model, project, or organization.
- Limit behavior: Understand whether requests fail, return an error, or require a plan change at the cap.
- Data terms: Check how the provider treats prompts and outputs. Google specifically says free-tier content may be used to improve its products, unlike paid-tier content.
- Upgrade conditions: Establish whether a payment method is required and how usage beyond an allocation is billed. Groq says upgrading to its Developer tier requires a valid payment method; after settling outstanding usage, a user can downgrade to the free tier and return to its free-tier limits and restrictions. - Change risk: Review the provider’s current terms and account-specific limits. Google explicitly says limits can change; the other providers’ reviewed pages describe current limits without promising they will never change.
Do not decide which is cheapest for your application from the free-tier label alone. A meaningful cost comparison needs the actual model, input/output token mix, applicable quota, and any charges after the free allocation.

Can you rely on a free LLM API for a project?
Free access can suit experiments and small projects when the model, quota, data terms, and availability fit your needs. For an application that must keep serving requests, treat a free allocation as a starting allowance rather than a service guarantee: check its current limits, build a path for handling caps, and avoid making the application depend on an unchanged quota.
