Start with KCSAN. Build a debug kernel with CONFIG_KCSAN=y; add CONFIG_KCSAN_STRICT=y for the strictest Linux Kernel Memory Model (LKMM)-oriented checking and CONFIG_KCSAN_WEAK_MEMORY=y when you are investigating missing barriers or release/acquire ordering. Tune kcsan.skip_watch, kcsan.udelay_task, and, for interrupt-heavy paths, kcsan.udelay_interrupt to make short page-cache races easier to observe. Then pair runtime sampling with LKMM litmus tests, lockdep/RCU validation, fault injection, and memory-corruption detectors.
No single setting proves that the page cache is race-free. KCSAN samples executions, weak-memory modeling covers only some ordering failures, and each kernel release can change option dependencies and defaults. Verify the Kconfig help and documentation in the exact source tree you are testing.
Choose the detector for the bug you suspect
Page-cache failures can have different causes that look similar in a report: two CPUs touching an unprotected field, a missing write or read barrier, an invalid lock or RCU lifetime assumption, an allocation or I/O error path that was never exercised, or an actual use-after-free. Select settings according to the suspected bug class rather than enabling every expensive option at once.

CONFIG_KCSAN=y
CONFIG_KCSAN_STRICT=y
CONFIG_KCSAN_WEAK_MEMORY=y
CONFIG_KCSAN adds compile-time instrumentation and uses watchpoint-based sampling to act as a dynamic race detector. CONFIG_KCSAN_STRICT selects the strictest available rules, making reports and access classification closer to the Linux memory-consistency model. CONFIG_KCSAN_WEAK_MEMORY enables a model that simulates load or store buffering; it can expose missing smp_mb(), smp_wmb(), smp_rmb(), smp_store_release(), and equivalent atomic ordering, but it does not represent every weak-ordering failure.
Option dependencies and availability vary by release. If an option is absent or forced off, read that release’s Kconfig help rather than copying a setting from another kernel tree.
Add invariant checks when the page-cache path uses locks or RCU
Enable lockdep-related debugging required by the target tree, commonly including CONFIG_PROVE_LOCKING and CONFIG_DEBUG_LOCK_ALLOC. Enable CONFIG_PROVE_RCU when the code uses RCU-protected page, mapping, or filesystem metadata. Lockdep can identify dependency cycles, invalid lock nesting, and ordering violations; RCU checking can flag dereferences outside a valid read-side critical section. Neither detector reports every unmarked plain load/store race, so retain KCSAN for that class.

Prepare a separate corruption-diagnostics build
Race instrumentation and memory debugging have different costs and failure signatures. For a suspected lifetime or bounds problem, build a variant with KASAN and the relevant UBSAN checks. Add CONFIG_DEBUG_PAGEALLOC when freed-page access or page reuse is plausible. Keeping a KCSAN-focused build and a corruption-focused build makes logs easier to interpret and avoids attributing a use-after-free to ordering merely because it appeared during a concurrent test.

Tune KCSAN so short races become observable
Control watchpoint frequency with kcsan.skip_watch
kcsan.skip_watch controls how many per-CPU operations KCSAN skips before installing another watchpoint. Lower values install watchpoints more often and raise the chance of observing a narrow page-cache interleaving, at the cost of more instrumentation overhead and a slower test. Start with a moderate value, then lower it only for a focused reproducer; otherwise a heavily instrumented system can become too slow to reach reclaim, writeback, or fault paths.
Widen task races with kcsan.udelay_task
kcsan.udelay_task inserts a delay after a task watchpoint is set. Increasing it gives another CPU more time to access the same location, which is useful for races between buffered read/write code, truncation, writeback, and mmap faults. The trade-off is substantial slowdown and altered scheduler behavior, so record the value with every reproducer.
Use interrupt delay carefully
kcsan.udelay_interrupt provides an analogous delay for interrupt contexts. It can expose races involving completion, block, or filesystem interrupt paths, but normally keep it smaller than task delay because long interrupt stalls increase latency and can trigger secondary failures or watchdogs.

Change parameters at runtime
After booting the instrumented kernel, inspect and change module parameters under /sys/module/kcsan/parameters/. KCSAN also exposes /sys/kernel/debug/kcsan for statistics, enable/disable control, and filtering; mount debugfs first if that directory is unavailable. A reproducible test record should include the kernel commit, complete configuration, all three parameter values, CPU count, filesystem, mount options, workload, and the first KCSAN report.

Turn page-cache activity into a useful stress workload
The detector is only as good as the interleavings it executes. The Linux documentation does not prescribe one universal page-cache test, so design a workload for the filesystem and code path under investigation.
Exercise competing operations
- Run concurrent buffered reads and writes against the same files and mappings.
- Mix
truncateand hole-punch operations with reads, writes, and mmap faults. - Drive writeback and reclaim while the file is hot; include memory pressure rather than testing only an idle machine.
- Repeat remounts or mount-option transitions if the suspected state is filesystem- or superblock-dependent.
- Include filesystem error paths and recovery operations, not only successful I/O.
Use multiple processes or threads with deliberately different operation rates, file sizes, offsets, and lifetimes. Run long enough to reach reclaim and writeback, but preserve a short deterministic reproducer once a report appears. Test the exact filesystem implementation and kernel tree that produced the failure; a generic benchmark can miss a race in a particular address-space or writeback path.
Make reports actionable
Capture the complete KCSAN warning, stack traces for both accesses, CPU and process context, access size and type, and whether either access was marked atomic or protected by a lock. Correlate the report with filesystem tracepoints, page-state information, and the operation that triggered it. A report involving a freed object or invalid address should move to KASAN or page-allocation debugging rather than being treated as proof of a missing barrier.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Investigate missing barriers with LKMM and weak-memory KCSAN
Know when a dynamic race report is not enough
Some ordering bugs use atomic variables or intentional lockless protocols, so the accesses may not look like a conventional plain-data race. A producer can publish page or mapping state before the data is visible, or a consumer can observe a flag without the writes that should precede it. In these cases, enable CONFIG_KCSAN_WEAK_MEMORY=y and write a minimal Linux Kernel Memory Model litmus test that contains only the relevant operations and barriers.

Use herd7 for exhaustive small scenarios
The LKMM tooling uses the model with herd7 to exhaustively explore the state space of small litmus tests. Run the test with the Linux configuration used by the tooling, for example:
herd7 -conf linux-kernel.cfg page-cache-ordering.litmus
Use the exact configuration filename and command syntax supplied by the LKMM tools in your kernel version. The result tells you whether the outcome is allowed by the modeled barriers and dependencies; it does not validate unrelated filesystem code or prove that the production execution will reach every state.
Run the same idea in the kernel with klitmus7
klitmus7 can convert a litmus test into a kernel module so that the ordering scenario runs on real hardware and the target kernel. This is valuable when architecture-specific behavior matters, but it remains a focused experiment. Keep the litmus test small, state which outcomes are forbidden, and compare the module’s behavior with the LKMM result rather than treating either one as a complete page-cache test.
Force the rare failures that expose page-cache bugs
Use fault injection for allocation and slab paths
Mount debugfs and use the documented fail_page_alloc and failslab controls to force page and slab allocation failures. These failures exercise cleanup, retry, reclaim, and partial-progress paths that successful allocations never touch.

Test copy and request failures
fail_usercopy can force copy-related failures, while fail_make_request injects block-I/O request failures. They are useful around page-cache writeback, read completion, error propagation, and retry logic. Boot-time forms and tools/testing/fault-injection/failcmd.sh are documented by the kernel; use those interfaces rather than inventing ad-hoc writes to debugfs files.
Record the injection probability, interval, duration, and targeted process or subsystem. A failure that occurs during reclaim can expose a different bug from one injected during writeback, so change one injection class at a time and preserve the exact settings in the test log.
Distinguish synchronization bugs from page-lifetime corruption
CONFIG_DEBUG_PAGEALLOC
CONFIG_DEBUG_PAGEALLOC protects freed pages so accesses after release are more likely to fault immediately. The debug_pagealloc= kernel parameter enables the runtime behavior, and debug_guardpage_minorder= controls the order of guarded pages. This is particularly useful when a page-cache race report is actually stale-page reuse or a delayed access after removal.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe mechanism depends on CPU MMU visibility. DMA or firmware writes that bypass the CPU page tables can evade the protection, so a clean result does not exclude every device-originated corruption.
KASAN and UBSAN
KASAN targets out-of-bounds and use-after-free accesses; selected UBSAN checks catch classes of undefined behavior. Enable them when a KCSAN report points at an object whose lifetime, bounds, or type validity is uncertain. Their reports can identify the first invalid access, which is often more useful than the later lock or page-cache symptom.
A practical investigation sequence
- Classify the symptom. Decide whether the first suspicion is a plain race, ordering failure, lock/RCU contract, injected error path, or memory corruption.
- Build the smallest useful debug kernel. Start with KCSAN and the checks relevant to the class; add strict and weak-memory modes when ordering is plausible.
- Establish a baseline. Run the workload without artificial delays, save KCSAN statistics, and verify that the filesystem reaches the intended read, writeback, reclaim, and fault paths.
- Increase observation deliberately. Lower
kcsan.skip_watchand raisekcsan.udelay_task; raise interrupt delay only for a justified interrupt-path test. - Check contracts separately. Enable lockdep and RCU validation and compare their reports with KCSAN’s access stacks.
- Reduce ordering questions. Extract the suspected producer/consumer sequence into an LKMM litmus test, run
herd7, and, when useful, run it throughklitmus7. - Inject rare failures. Exercise allocation, slab, copy, and request-error controls while repeating the same concurrency workload.
- Switch to corruption tools when evidence points there. Reproduce with KASAN or
CONFIG_DEBUG_PAGEALLOCbefore changing barriers in response to a stale-pointer symptom. - Minimize and rerun. Keep the smallest workload and parameter set that reproduces the warning, then test the proposed fix on the same kernel and filesystem configuration.
What a clean run does—and does not—mean
- KCSAN’s sampling means an unreported race may simply not have been observed.
- Weak-memory KCSAN models buffering and selected ordering patterns, not every architecture or barrier failure.
- LKMM exhaustively explores only the small test you wrote; omitted code, interrupts, DMA, and filesystem state can still matter.
- Lockdep and RCU checks validate specific contracts, not all data accesses.
- Artificial delays can change timing enough to hide a production-only failure as well as reveal a new one.
- Performance overhead is workload- and configuration-dependent; KCSAN documentation gives qualitative multi-times slowdowns for example configurations, not a universal page-cache detection rate.
Treat the tools as complementary evidence. A convincing fix usually has a KCSAN or invariant-checking reproducer, an ordering argument or LKMM test when barriers are involved, and a rerun through the relevant error and lifetime paths.
