For a lower-spec 64-bit PC or laptop, start with Xubuntu if you want a conventional Ubuntu-based desktop, and consider Linux Mint if its published requirements and support model suit your machine. For particularly constrained hardware, antiX is an option if you are comfortable with its distinct system design. Check the computer’s CPU architecture, memory, storage, and essential devices before choosing: a published minimum is an install threshold, not a promise of smooth browsing.

How to choose a lightweight Linux distribution

“Lightweight” does not identify one universal winner. A suitable distribution depends on more than RAM: processor architecture, free storage, firmware and boot support, graphics, Wi-Fi, and the applications you need all matter. Browsing with many tabs or playing high-resolution video can remain demanding even on a lean desktop.

  • Check architecture: confirm whether the computer is 32-bit or 64-bit. Xubuntu’s current requirements specify a 64-bit Intel or AMD processor; antiX publishes both 32-bit and 64-bit editions.
  • Separate minimums from recommendations: minimum RAM and disk figures do not establish that everyday work will feel comfortable.
  • Match the workflow: decide whether you want a conventional desktop or are willing to adapt to a more specialized system design.
  • Review current release information: requirements and available images can change, so check the distribution’s current download and release pages before installation.

There is no current, matched performance test establishing which of these choices is fastest. Avoid treating an unmeasured speed ranking as a reliable guide.

Lightweight Linux options to consider

Xubuntu: a conventional Ubuntu-based desktop

Xubuntu uses the Xfce desktop and can be tried from a USB drive or DVD before installation. Its download page lists a 64-bit Intel or AMD processor, 1 GB RAM, and 8.6 GB of free disk space as minimums. For smoother use with multiple applications, it recommends a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, 2 GB RAM, and 20 GB of storage. These figures do not guarantee smooth performance with heavy browsing. Xubuntu also notes that a live session runs more slowly than an installed system. See Xubuntu’s download and system requirements.

Linux Mint: check its requirements and support model

Linux Mint describes itself as a desktop and laptop operating system and highlights ease of use and configurability. Its FAQ lists 2 GB RAM and 20 GB of disk space, recommending 4 GB RAM and 100 GB of disk space; it also lists a 1024×768 display resolution. The FAQ requirements are not edition-specific, so they should not be read as requirements only for Mint’s Xfce edition. Linux Mint says its LTS releases receive five years of support. Read the Linux Mint FAQ.

antiX: an option for especially constrained hardware

antiX is based on Debian Stable and is designed for Intel- and AMD-compatible x86 systems. The project describes it as systemd-free and elogind-free, a design that sets it apart from more conventional desktop choices. Its About page gives 512 MB RAM as a recommended minimum and 7 GB as the minimum hard-disk size. It reports antiX-26.1 images for both 32-bit and 64-bit systems. Those specifications do not establish how well a particular machine will handle modern applications, and the distinct system design may require some adjustment. Read about antiX.

Lubuntu: another lower-spec Ubuntu flavor

Canonical points readers with lower-spec computers toward Xubuntu or Lubuntu, including systems with 2 GB RAM or more. That guidance is in the context of Ubuntu Desktop’s requirements; it is not a full set of Lubuntu-specific hardware requirements. An older Lubuntu community wiki is marked deprecated and contains outdated information, so its old LXDE details and numeric requirements should not be treated as current specifications. Check Canonical’s Ubuntu 26.04 release notes.

MX Linux: a documented midweight alternative

Xfce’s documentation describes MX Linux as a Debian Stable-based “midweight” system and lists 2 GB RAM and at least 10 GB of free disk space among representative specifications. Xubuntu Minimum: 1 GB RAM and 8.6 GB free disk. Recommended for smoother multi-application use: 2 GB RAM and 20 GB storage; 1.5 GHz dual-core processor. Specifies a 64-bit Intel or AMD processor. Requirements are not a heavy-browsing performance guarantee.
Linux Mint FAQ: 2 GB RAM and 20 GB disk; recommends 4 GB RAM and 100 GB disk. Lists 1024×768 display resolution. Figures are not edition-specific. LTS releases receive five years of support, according to Mint.
antiX 512 MB RAM recommended minimum; 7 GB minimum hard-disk size. Project page reports antiX-26.1 in 32-bit and 64-bit editions and describes a systemd-free, elogind-free design.
Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS Canonical states 2 GHz dual-core or better, 6 GB RAM, and 25 GB free storage for a comfortable experience. These are Ubuntu Desktop figures, not full requirements for Xubuntu or Lubuntu. Canonical points to those flavors for lower-spec systems, including computers with 2 GB RAM or more.
MX Linux, in Xfce documentation 2 GB RAM and at least 10 GB free disk space. Representative specifications from Xfce documentation, not necessarily the latest MX Linux release’s complete official requirements.

Why Ubuntu Desktop requirements are not flavor requirements

Canonical’s Ubuntu 26.04 LTS release notes state that Ubuntu Desktop needs a 2 GHz dual-core processor or better, at least 6 GB RAM, and 25 GB of free storage for a comfortable experience. Canonical suggests Xubuntu or Lubuntu for lower-spec computers, including those with 2 GB RAM or more. The Ubuntu Desktop figures describe that edition; they should not be copied over as complete requirements for either flavor. Read the Ubuntu 26.04 release notes.

Test the computer before replacing its operating system

  1. Identify the hardware. Confirm CPU architecture, installed RAM, available storage, and whether the computer can boot from USB or DVD. Check any firmware or boot restrictions that could affect installation.
  2. Make a backup. Save important files before changing partitions or installing an operating system.
  3. Boot a live session when available. Xubuntu supports trying its system from USB or DVD before installation. A live session is slower than an installed Xubuntu system, so use it to check compatibility rather than judge final speed.
  4. Test the devices and tasks that matter. Check networking and Wi-Fi, graphics, audio, sleep and resume, printers, and other peripherals. Try the applications you depend on, including the sort of web browsing you expect to do.
  5. Install only after the checks pass. Confirm the selected distribution’s current release notes and installation guidance, then proceed only when you are comfortable with the compatibility results.

For installation media, Ubuntu documents using a USB port or DVD drive for ISO-based installation. See Ubuntu’s desktop installation guide.

Choose by the computer you have

  • Lower-spec 64-bit computer and a familiar desktop is the priority: try Xubuntu’s live session and verify that its listed requirements fit the machine.
  • You want Linux Mint’s desktop approach and support model: compare your system with Mint’s FAQ figures, remembering those figures are not limited to a particular edition.
  • Memory or storage is especially constrained, or the machine is 32-bit: investigate antiX’s current images and design before installing; its published architecture options and low minimum figures make it relevant, but do not guarantee a comfortable experience with every workload.
  • You are considering Lubuntu: use current Canonical guidance and Lubuntu’s current information, not deprecated wiki requirements.
  • You are considering MX Linux: treat the figures in Xfce documentation as representative, and confirm the current release’s own installation guidance.

A distribution can reduce the demands of the desktop environment, but it cannot erase hardware limitations or guarantee support for a specific device or application. The live compatibility check is the practical way to reduce that uncertainty before committing.
