If you want to learn Linux commands through play, start with OverTheWire Bandit. It is a real shell-based challenge for absolute beginners, built around progressive levels. Other options named in a roundup include Linux Journey and Command Challenge, but their current access and mechanics are not confirmed here—so this is a shortlist of verified and provisional leads, not five equally vetted games.

Which Linux command-line game should you try first?

Choose based on whether you want practice in a real shell or a more guided, game-like lesson. Bandit is the clearest choice for hands-on Unix/Linux basics; the other names below need a current check before you rely on them.

Option Format and focus What is established Access confidence
OverTheWire Bandit Real shell challenge over SSH; Unix/Linux basics Designed for absolute beginners; levels provide information needed to start the next one. Use command manuals and shell help when stuck. Official documentation available; recheck connection details on the live page.
Linux Journey Interactive modules; described as more textbook-like than a video game Named in an indexed excerpt of a How-To Geek roundup; current modules and access were not independently confirmed. Unverified here.
Command Challenge Described in the same excerpt as a task with an in-page terminal Current mechanics and access were not independently confirmed. Unverified here.
Bashcrawl Dungeon-crawler concept using directories as rooms, files as objects, and shell scripts as interactive objects Described by an older secondary article; current repository and setup were not confirmed. Provisional lead; verify the project before installing or recommending it.
Terminus Reported as an adventure game for learning basic shell commands The description comes from a Reddit comment; identity and current availability are unverified. Low confidence; do not confuse it with TermAdventure, a separately named project.

1. OverTheWire Bandit: learn in a real shell

Bandit is the strongest starting point if you are new to the terminal and want to learn Linux commands by solving challenges rather than following a conventional lesson. OverTheWire says, “The Bandit wargame is aimed at absolute beginners.” Its levels are progressive: finishing one gives you information needed to begin the next. See the official Bandit documentation.

How to begin

  1. Open the official Bandit page and start at Level 0.
  2. Follow the current SSH connection instructions on that page. The search-indexed documentation lists host bandit.labs.overthewire.org and port 2220; verify those details live because connection information can change.
  3. Work through each task in the provided shell. When a command is unfamiliar, consult man <command>; for shell built-ins, try help <command>, as the game documentation recommends.

This format builds familiarity with the command line itself, but it expects you to investigate rather than hand you a complete tutorial for every command. That is useful practice if you are willing to read help pages and experiment carefully.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Linux Journey: a more lesson-like path

Linux Journey was described in an indexed excerpt from a How-To Geek roundup as a series of interactive modules that feels more like a textbook than a video game. That can suit learners who prefer structured explanations over open-ended shell puzzles. The roundup page could not be independently checked, so treat both the description and current availability as provisional.

3. Command Challenge: short command-line tasks

The same indexed roundup excerpt depicts Command Challenge as a task paired with an in-page terminal. That presentation may be appealing if you want a contained exercise rather than a longer SSH-based sequence. Its current task set, interface, and access could not be independently verified, so check the project itself before committing time.

4. Bashcrawl: explore a shell-shaped dungeon

An older DevOpsChops article describes Bashcrawl as a dungeon crawler in which directories act as rooms, files as objects, and shell scripts as interactive objects. That concept connects filesystem navigation with a game world, but the source is secondary and older. Confirm that the project repository is still available and inspect its setup instructions before using it; current status is not established here.

5. Terminus: an unverified adventure-game lead

A Reddit comment describes a game called Terminus as an MIT adventure game for basic shell commands. Because that is user-generated evidence, the title’s identity and present availability remain unverified. Do not mistake it for TermAdventure, a separately titled UNIX teaching project described in an academic abstract; that project is not evidence that Terminus exists or is currently playable.

How to choose a Linux terminal game

  • For real command-line experience: Pick Bandit. It uses a shell challenge workflow rather than merely describing commands.
  • For more guided learning: Linux Journey is the lesson-like lead in this shortlist, but confirm that its modules are accessible and current.
  • For quick browser-style tasks: Command Challenge is described as having an in-page terminal; verify its current implementation before using it.
  • For an adventure theme: Bashcrawl and Terminus are less certain options. Check their primary project pages or repositories for availability and setup details.
  • For security topics after the basics: OverTheWire recommends Bandit first for Unix/Linux basics, then suggests choosing another game by interest. Its index points to Natas for web security, Krypton for cryptography, and Leviathan for reverse engineering. Those move beyond general shell practice, and each shell game has its own SSH port. See the OverTheWire wargames index.
