Start with the settings that are easy to reverse and have the clearest effect: connect the charger, select the appropriate operating mode, confirm the display is running at a supported refresh rate, turn on Windows Game Mode, update the graphics driver, and close unnecessary background software. Only then adjust a game’s graphics quality if its frame rate is still inadequate.

Performance mode is usually the right choice for demanding games while plugged in if you can tolerate more fan noise and heat. Balance is a sensible mixed-use setting, while Quiet favors lower noise or battery operation. Lenovo’s menus, hotkeys, BIOS options and even mode names vary by model, so use the guide for your exact machine before assuming a control exists.

1. Plug in and choose the operating mode

On supported Legion laptops, the operating mode changes the performance limits, power consumption and heat-sink fan speed. Lenovo describes Performance as the mode for maximum performance when connected to AC power, provided the extra fan noise is acceptable. Balance is intended for mixed workloads, and Quiet is aimed at battery use or a lower-noise experience. Lenovo states that “the maximum attainable performance, power consumption, and speed limit for the heat sink fan vary between the operation modes” (Lenovo Legion user guide).

These are trade-offs rather than free frame-rate switches. A higher-power mode can raise heat and fan speed, while a quieter mode may reduce the performance available to a game.

Mode Best starting situation What to expect
Performance Demanding games while connected to the charger Highest available performance limits; more power use, heat and fan noise
Balance Games plus everyday work, or when noise matters Middle-ground performance and acoustics
Quiet Battery operation, light games or a low-noise room Lower power and fan activity; less performance headroom

How to change it

  1. Connect the AC adapter.
  2. Open the Lenovo control application supplied for your model, or use the documented keyboard shortcut if your model provides one.
  3. Select Performance, Balance or Quiet (the labels can differ).
  4. Launch the game and check frame rate, temperatures and noise. Return to Balance or Quiet if the result is not worth the extra heat or sound.

Do not assume a mode found on one Legion or LOQ model exists on another Lenovo gaming laptop. The controls described in Lenovo guides apply to specific families and revisions.

2. Set the display to the refresh rate you can actually use

A high-refresh panel can make camera movement and scrolling look smoother, but it does not create extra frames. The game, graphics settings and GPU must produce frames fast enough to benefit from the panel’s capability. A lower refresh rate can reduce battery use.

Windows path

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose System, then Display.
  3. Open Advanced display.
  4. Select the internal display and choose an available refresh rate appropriate for the game.

Choose the highest supported rate when you are plugged in and the game can feed it consistently. If frame rates are well below that level, selecting a lower rate can make power use more reasonable without changing game rendering quality.

When no refresh switch appears

Some laptop panels expose only one refresh rate in Windows. Certain dual-rate panels support switching through a Lenovo shortcut instead. The option depends on the exact panel and model; Lenovo’s Legion 5i (16-inch, 10) guide documents model-specific display behavior (Lenovo guide). If Advanced display shows no alternative, do not install an unverified utility or force a rate the panel does not list.

3. Turn on Windows Game Mode and update the graphics driver

Lenovo’s Windows 10 and 11 gaming guidance recommends enabling Game Mode and keeping graphics drivers current (Lenovo’s gaming-experience guide). These changes are low-risk and should precede advanced tuning.

Enable Game Mode

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Gaming and select Game Mode.
  3. Turn Game Mode on.

Windows then prioritizes gaming activity using its own scheduling behavior. It is not a guarantee of a particular frame-rate increase, and the effect depends on what else is running.

Update the correct graphics package

Use the current support page for your exact Lenovo model and GPU, or the supported update channel documented for that hardware. Laptop graphics packages can depend on the integrated GPU, discrete GPU, Windows version and Lenovo’s model-specific validation. Restart after installation if the installer requests it, then test the same game and scene you used before. Avoid treating a driver update as a reason to change several graphics settings at once; otherwise you cannot identify what helped.

4. Remove unnecessary background load

Before lowering image quality, check whether another application is consuming CPU, memory, storage or GPU resources. Lenovo specifically recommends removing unused programs and disabling unnecessary startup applications in its Windows gaming recommendations.

Practical cleanup sequence

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps and uninstall software you no longer use.
  2. Open Settings → Apps → Startup.
  3. Turn off startup entries that you do not need immediately after sign-in, such as launchers or helpers for software you rarely use.
  4. Restart Windows and test the game again.

Keep security software, device utilities and applications you genuinely need. If a game’s launcher, overlay or anti-cheat component requires a background service, disabling it can prevent the game from starting; re-enable it if that happens.

5. Adjust the game only when performance still falls short

If the laptop remains below your target frame rate after the system-level checks, change one in-game setting at a time. Lenovo lists shadows and lighting, ambient occlusion, reflections, ray tracing and anti-aliasing as options to reduce when a game struggles (Lenovo guidance). The guidance does not assign a universal order, FPS gain or preset, because the cost varies by game engine and resolution.

What each setting generally changes

  • Ray tracing: Expensive lighting, reflections or shadows; disabling it can substantially reduce GPU load in supported games.
  • Shadows and lighting: Often affect both GPU time and visual depth. Lowering them can help busy scenes.
  • Reflections: Can be costly in scenes with water, glass or polished surfaces.
  • Ambient occlusion: Adds contact shading around objects; reducing it usually changes depth cues more than object detail.
  • Anti-aliasing: Smooths jagged edges. Lower levels can improve performance but may make geometry look rougher.

A controlled test

  1. Record your current resolution, refresh rate and graphics preset.
  2. Change one setting, preferably in a repeatable area of the game.
  3. Play for several minutes and observe average smoothness and distracting stutter, not just a brief peak FPS reading.
  4. Keep the change only if the visual compromise is acceptable; otherwise restore it and test the next setting.

There is no Lenovo-wide FPS percentage to promise. The same setting can be inexpensive in one title and extremely demanding in another.

6. Decide deliberately how much heat, noise and battery use you accept

Performance mode is not an ideal everyday default for every owner. Use it for games or workloads that need the additional limits, then switch to Balance or Quiet for browsing, video and battery operation. This reduces unnecessary fan activity and power consumption.

Why the battery can fall while the charger is connected

Lenovo documents a model-specific behavior in which some Legion and LOQ Gen 9-and-newer configurations with RTX 4050 or RTX 4060 graphics can draw from the battery during high-demand play in Performance or a tuned Custom mode, even with the AC adapter connected (Lenovo battery article). This is not evidence that every Lenovo gaming laptop or every mode has a battery fault. It occurs when system demand temporarily exceeds what the adapter and power-management limits provide.

Battery protection option

On applicable machines, Lenovo documents a BIOS battery-protection setting that prioritizes charge retention. Enabling it can limit available performance, and the option may not exist on your model or BIOS version. Check the exact model documentation before changing BIOS settings. If your laptop is not one of the listed configurations, treat a falling charge while plugged in as a troubleshooting issue rather than assuming this documented behavior applies.

7. Confirm which Lenovo controls your model actually supports

Lenovo Vantage is described as a hardware-configuration and support application, but Lenovo explicitly notes that available features vary by computer model (Lenovo Vantage user guide). A menu, thermal mode, hotkey or battery option shown in a guide for one Legion or LOQ cannot be presumed to be present on another.

  • Identify the complete model name and machine type from Windows Settings → System → About or the label on the laptop.
  • Open Lenovo Support and select that exact model before following a guide.
  • Check your Windows edition and BIOS version when a feature is described as model- or firmware-dependent.
  • Use only refresh rates, operating modes and battery controls that Windows or Lenovo’s own software presents for your hardware.

Lenovo’s general recommendations cover Windows 10 and Windows 11, while the cited operation-mode and refresh instructions come from particular Legion guides. Keeping those scopes separate prevents a missing menu from being mistaken for a malfunction.

8. A quick first-setup checklist

  1. Connect the correct AC adapter.
  2. Choose Performance for demanding plugged-in play, Balance for mixed use, or Quiet for low noise and battery operation.
  3. Set Settings → System → Display → Advanced display to a supported refresh rate.
  4. Enable Settings → Gaming → Game Mode.
  5. Install the current graphics driver for the exact Lenovo model and GPU.
  6. Disable unnecessary startup programs and uninstall unused software.
  7. Test the game before changing graphics quality.
  8. If performance is still poor, lower one of shadows, lighting, reflections, ray tracing, ambient occlusion or anti-aliasing and retest.
  9. If the battery declines during plugged-in play, verify whether your Legion or LOQ configuration is among Lenovo’s documented high-demand cases before changing BIOS or power settings.

What these settings cannot guarantee

Changing a mode or refresh rate cannot overcome a game’s hardware requirements, thermal throttling, a defective adapter, blocked cooling vents or a panel’s physical limits. Lenovo’s published recommendations provide no universal benchmark, FPS increase or one-size-fits-all graphics preset. Measure the result in the game you actually play, keep changes reversible, and prioritize stable frame delivery and acceptable temperature and noise over a single peak number.
