For a large 4K TV that can double as a PC display, start with the exact model and screen size—not just the product family’s maximum refresh-rate claim. The 2025 LG OLED C5 is the most directly substantiated pick here: LG specifies four HDMI 2.1 ports and VRR up to 144Hz, and RTINGS tested 4K gaming at 144Hz on the 42-inch version. The LG G5 and Samsung S90F/S95F are also candidates, but their high refresh figures are conditional on the specific SKU and a compatible PC. For office work, account for text sharpness, OLED burn-in risk, glare, and ergonomics as carefully as gaming performance.

Can you use a 4K TV as a computer monitor?

Yes. A compatible TV can serve as a PC display for gaming, streaming, and general desktop use. The important question is whether the exact TV size and SKU, PC graphics card, connection, and settings support the resolution and refresh rate you want.

For gaming, prioritize the complete signal chain: 4K resolution, refresh rate, HDMI input capability, variable refresh rate (VRR), and low-latency behavior. VRR synchronizes the display’s refresh rate with a game’s output to help reduce tearing or stutter. Input lag is the delay between an action, such as a button press or mouse movement, and its appearance on screen. LG explains these features in its TV for Gaming guide.

A high refresh-rate figure is not a promise that every PC will drive the TV at that rate. LG says the corresponding C5 and G5 modes require compatible PC graphics hardware; Samsung’s maximum figures vary by model. Check the specifications for the exact set and confirm that the PC’s output and cable work reliably at the desired signal.

Which large 4K TVs are supported by the available evidence?

These are model-family candidates, not a market-wide ranking. The independent office-use findings below apply specifically to the 42-inch LG C5; the manufacturer specifications for other models do not establish how sharp text will look or how comfortable they are for desktop work.

TV PC-relevant evidence What to verify
LG OLED evo C5 (2025) LG lists four HDMI 2.1 ports with up to 48 Gbps bandwidth and VRR up to 144Hz. RTINGS’ review of the 42-inch model reports 4K at 144Hz, HDMI 2.1, VRR, and low input lag in Game Mode. LG lists sizes from 42 to 83 inches, but the independent review covers the 42-inch version. Confirm the precise size and SKU; text sharpness, glare handling, and ergonomics may not transfer to every size.
LG OLED evo G5 (2025) LG lists VRR up to 165Hz with a compatible PC graphics card and compares that ceiling with the C5’s 144Hz. The refresh-rate ceiling alone does not establish that it is better for office work. Confirm size-specific support and the exact SKU.
Samsung OLED S90F / S95F (2025) Samsung lists up to 4K 240Hz, 165Hz, or 144Hz across its gaming-TV range, depending on model. Its S95F information identifies four HDMI 2.1 ports; the US S90F page lists 144Hz. Samsung also lists low input lag and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) features. Do not assume the range-wide maximum applies to a particular S90F or S95F. Check the exact diagonal and SKU. The sources cited here do not include independent office or text testing for these families.

Will text look sharp on a large 4K TV?

Not automatically. Resolution describes the number of pixels, but screen size affects how densely they are packed. RTINGS found that text on the reviewed 42-inch C5 was less sharp than on smaller 4K displays, describing it as mediocre for office use. That is a specific finding about the tested 42-inch set, not a universal result for every large 4K TV.

Before choosing a TV for long work sessions, view text at the desk distance you intend to use and try your normal operating-system scaling. Look at small fonts, high-contrast edges, and the applications you use every day. There is no single viewing distance established by the cited evidence as ideal for all users.

  • Refresh rate: A smooth, tear-free experience with AMD FreeSync Premium (refresh rate up to 120Hz) and an ultra-low 0.03ms response time create a captivating experience for work and play.

  • Ultra-thin bezel: Designed with a sleek, modern aesthetic and an ash white finish, this display features ultra-thin bezels for a refined, minimalist design.

Also separate gaming responsiveness from desktop comfort. Low input lag in Game Mode can make controls feel responsive, but it does not make text denser or give a television a height-adjustable monitor stand.

Is OLED burn-in a concern for desktop use?

It is a risk worth considering if your work leaves static content on screen for long periods. Desktop taskbars, fixed application panels, and repeatedly placed windows can remain in the same locations. RTINGS flags burn-in risk for the C5 in its office and editing assessments; the review does not quantify the likelihood for every user or usage pattern.

How should you check a TV and PC will work together?

  1. Identify the exact TV SKU and size. Find its supported resolution and refresh rates for the input you plan to use. Family-level headlines can hide differences between diagonals or models.
  2. Check the PC graphics output. Confirm the graphics card can produce the desired 4K refresh rate. LG explicitly conditions the C5’s 144Hz and G5’s 165Hz modes on compatible PC graphics hardware.
  3. Match the connection. LG specifies four HDMI 2.1 ports with up to 48 Gbps bandwidth for the C5. Verify the input and signal support on the exact TV. An existing cable does not need replacement if it reliably carries the signal you want.
  4. Enable and test gaming features. Check the TV and PC settings for the supported high-refresh mode, VRR, and low-latency or Game Mode behavior. Test the games you actually play rather than relying on a maximum specification alone.
  5. Test desktop use separately. Inspect text at your normal desk distance, use your preferred scaling, and consider whether static content makes OLED longevity a concern for your routine.

What should you check before placing a large TV at a desk?

Large screens can be difficult to position like conventional monitors. Check the stand’s footprint and height, the distance to the screen, viewing angle, and whether the display can be placed at a comfortable eye level. RTINGS notes that the reviewed 42-inch C5 lacks ergonomic stand adjustments and a PC-usable USB hub, so plan for any desk or peripheral needs the TV will not meet.

For wall mounting, check the exact set’s mounting pattern, wall type, viewing height, and installation capacity before buying. LG recommends professional installation, particularly for larger wall-mounted TVs. The C5 review also says the tested model handles glare well in moderate lighting but cannot overcome intense glare; placement and room lighting still matter.

Which one should you choose?

  • For a gaming-focused setup with the clearest independent evidence: consider the 2025 LG C5, while remembering that the cited hands-on office and gaming review is for the 42-inch version. Its stated 144Hz ceiling matters only if the exact set, input, and PC support the target signal.
  • If you want to investigate a higher refresh ceiling: compare the LG G5’s stated up-to-165Hz VRR or Samsung’s S90F/S95F options, but verify the exact SKU rather than applying a family-wide maximum to every size.
  • For a work-first desktop: make text appearance, static-content habits, screen placement, and stand or mount ergonomics decisive. Gaming specifications alone do not establish that a TV will feel like a conventional office monitor.
