The honest answer: a usable laptop under $150 is usually refurbished, used, or open-box. The best choice depends less on a brand name than on whether you need only a browser or must run Windows desktop software, how much battery life remains, and what warranty and return rights the seller provides. New, capable Windows laptops are not a stable category at this price.
What you can realistically buy for $150
A hard $150 ceiling turns laptop shopping into a listing-by-listing search. Inventory, condition, memory, storage, battery health, and seller protections vary from one unit to the next. Refurbished and open-box stock is the credible center of the market; a product that appears today may be gone or repriced tomorrow.
A current Best Buy under-$150 search page, accessed October 13, 2026, illustrates the kind of hardware that appears in this range. It lists a refurbished Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 11e Gen 5 with an Intel Celeron N4100, 4GB of RAM, a 128GB solid-state drive, an 11.6-inch touchscreen and Windows 11 Pro. The same search results show a refurbished Dell Chromebook 3100 with a Celeron N4000, 4GB of RAM and 16GB of eMMC storage. These are listing examples, not hands-on-tested recommendations. Confirm the exact unit, seller, condition, battery, charger, warranty, support eligibility and return terms before paying.

Do not interpret a low price as proof that a machine is a bargain. At this budget, a $130 laptop with a weak battery, missing charger or short return window can cost more than a $150 unit with documented testing and a usable warranty.

Choose the operating system before the model
Chromebook: best for browser-first work
A Chromebook runs ChromeOS and is designed around web applications. It is a sensible fit for online classrooms, webmail, cloud documents, video calls, streaming and basic browsing. The lighter operating system can make older, inexpensive hardware feel more responsive than a comparable Windows installation.
The trade-off is software compatibility. Windows-only accounting tools, full desktop creative applications, many engineering packages and programs that require local installers may not run as expected. Android and Linux support also vary by model, so do not assume that an older Chromebook can install every app you use on a phone or desktop.
Storage is another constraint. A 16GB eMMC Chromebook can hold the operating system and a few local files, but it is not a substitute for a large SSD. Plan to keep documents in cloud storage or use a compatible external drive, and leave room for updates.
Windows refurb: necessary for desktop programs
Choose a Windows laptop when your work depends on desktop software, peripherals with Windows drivers or a workflow that cannot move to web apps. A Windows refurb can provide a larger SSD and familiar application support, but it may be older, slower and more power-hungry than a Chromebook at the same price.

Verify the actual processor and the supported Windows version. A seller’s “Windows 11 Pro” label does not by itself prove that the individual device meets Microsoft’s current CPU, security and firmware requirements. Ask for the exact model or service tag when the listing is vague, then check the processor generation, installed memory, storage and activation status before the return window closes.
Specifications that matter most under $150
Processor
At this price, low-power Intel Celeron chips are common. The N4000 and N4100 examples above are adequate for a few browser tabs, documents and video playback, but they are not intended for demanding photo, video or 3D work. The model number matters less than the workload: a machine that is acceptable for email may feel frustrating with many tabs, large spreadsheets or simultaneous video calls.
Memory
4GB of RAM is common in sub-$150 listings and is workable for light use, especially on ChromeOS. It leaves little headroom for many tabs, large web apps or Windows background services. If an 8GB model appears within budget, it is generally the more comfortable choice, but confirm that the memory is actually installed and not merely described as “upgradable.” Many inexpensive laptops have soldered RAM.
Storage
A 128GB SSD, as shown in the ThinkPad example, gives Windows considerably more breathing room than a 16GB eMMC drive. SSDs also make startup and application loading feel faster than older hard drives. On Chromebooks, small eMMC storage is normal; check how much free space remains rather than relying only on the advertised capacity.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

Battery and charger
Refurbished listings may not use a uniform battery standard. Ask whether capacity was tested, whether the battery is original and whether the correct charger is included. A laptop that works only when plugged in is not equivalent to one with several hours of usable battery life, even if both boot successfully.
Pick a screen size that matches how you work
Consumer Reports’ 2026 laptop guidance says a 10- to 13-inch model is best when you plan to carry it frequently. The 11.6-inch ThinkPad example is therefore easy to transport, but its compact keyboard and display can feel cramped for long typing sessions or side-by-side documents.
Models from 14 to 16 inches provide more viewing area and more room for a comfortable keyboard, although they are heavier and often harder to find under $150 in good condition. Smaller laptops generally cost less. Check the physical dimensions, keyboard layout, screen resolution, hinge movement and touchscreen condition in the exact listing photos rather than assuming that a model name tells you everything.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse this inspection checklist before ordering
- Open the full item page. Search-page cards can omit storage type, cosmetic grade, seller identity or important exclusions.
- Record the exact model and processor. Similar names can hide different generations and support dates.
- Confirm memory and storage. Distinguish installed RAM from maximum supported RAM, and SSD from eMMC or a mechanical hard drive.
- Check the operating-system requirement. For ChromeOS, find the model’s automatic-update expiration date. For Windows, verify that the processor and device meet the supported-version requirements.
- Read the battery statement. Look for a tested capacity, a stated minimum health level or a clear “battery not guaranteed” warning.
- Confirm accessories. Make sure the charger is included and matches the laptop’s connector and power rating.
- Inspect photos and condition notes. Look for cracked hinges, missing keys, screen spots, deep case damage, blocked ports and worn rubber feet.
- Calculate the real total. Include shipping, tax, membership requirements and any return-shipping charge.
- Save the listing. Keep a copy of the configuration, promised accessories and policy in case the delivered unit differs.
Support dates can matter more than the purchase price
Checking a Chromebook
ChromeOS devices receive automatic updates only through a model-specific date. Before buying an older Chromebook, look up the exact model’s automatic-update expiration date using Google’s published support information. A low price is poor value if the device is near the end of its update period and your school or employer requires a supported browser.

Checking a Windows laptop
For a Windows refurb, identify the processor generation and the device’s security hardware, then verify eligibility for the supported Windows release. Check Settings > System > About after delivery to confirm the model, processor and installed RAM. Check Settings > System > Activation to confirm activation. If the listing promised Windows 11 Pro but the device is activated with another edition—or is not activated—contact the seller before the return deadline.
Seller protection is part of the specification
Refurbishment is not a single industry-wide grade. One seller may replace worn batteries and provide a warranty; another may only verify that the laptop powers on. Human-I-T’s buying guidance emphasizes that warranty and return terms differ by seller, and the same caution applies to marketplace and open-box listings.
- Warranty: note the duration, what parts are covered, who pays shipping and whether batteries are excluded.
- Returns: check the number of days, restocking fees, return-shipping responsibility and whether the item must be in original condition.
- Seller identity: distinguish the retailer from a third-party marketplace seller and read that seller’s policy.
- Support: confirm whether the seller provides setup help, replacement parts or only a refund.
Do not assume that “refurbished,” “renewed” or “open box” means the same thing across sellers. The written policy for the exact listing controls.

Test the laptop immediately after delivery
- Document the package. Photograph the box, serial number, accessories and any damage before powering on.
- Verify the advertised configuration. In Windows, use Settings > System > About. In ChromeOS, open Settings > About ChromeOS and confirm the model and version.
- Test every physical control. Type on every key, move the trackpad, adjust brightness and volume, test the webcam and microphone, and connect each USB, audio and video port.
- Check the display. Show white, black and solid-color backgrounds to reveal dead pixels, bright spots or uneven backlighting. Test touchscreen gestures if the model includes touch.
- Measure battery behavior. Charge fully, unplug it and use it for a normal session. On Windows, running
powercfg /batteryreportcreates a report you can review for design versus full-charge capacity. - Install updates. Apply operating-system and firmware updates, then retest sleep, wake, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
- Decide within the return period. If the condition, battery or configuration differs from the listing, stop modifying the machine and contact the seller with your documentation.
Common failure modes and practical fixes
The laptop is slow with a few tabs
Close unused tabs, remove unnecessary startup applications and keep free storage available. If the machine still struggles with ordinary browsing, return it rather than expecting a low-power processor or 4GB of RAM to handle workloads it was not designed for.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.

The Chromebook cannot run a required program
Confirm whether the application has a complete web version or a supported ChromeOS alternative. If it requires a Windows installer, return the Chromebook while eligible and choose a Windows device instead.
The Windows device fails an update or compatibility check
Record the exact error, verify the processor and security requirements, and contact the seller. Do not assume that reinstalling Windows will make unsupported hardware compliant.
The battery drains unusually fast
Check brightness, background applications and battery-report capacity, but compare the result with the seller’s written promise. If the battery was advertised as tested and arrives materially below that condition, use the warranty or return policy.

Which type of buyer should choose which option?
| Your priority | Better direction | Reason | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|---|
| School portals, email, documents and streaming | Chromebook | Browser-first software and modest hardware can work well within the budget | Short remaining update support or limited local storage on older models |
| Windows-only business or creative software | Windows refurb | Runs desktop applications and uses standard Windows peripherals | Older hardware, greater battery wear and stricter support checks |
| Frequent travel | 10–13-inch model | Consumer Reports identifies this range as suited to frequent carrying | Smaller keyboard and viewing area |
| Long typing sessions or split-screen work | 14–16-inch model, if found with acceptable condition | More screen and keyboard room | Heavier, less common and often pricier under the cap |
| Lowest risk of a bad transaction | Listing with explicit battery, charger, warranty and returns | Clear terms give you recourse when a used unit differs from its description | The best-protected listing may not have the fastest processor |
When to raise the budget
If you need 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, a newer processor and predictable Windows support, $150 is usually too restrictive. Human-I-T’s October 9, 2026 listings placed its 8GB/256GB Windows laptops at $199.99–$259.99, with the lower number available to Gold Members. That range is specific to that retailer and date, but it demonstrates the practical cost of moving to a more comfortable Windows configuration.
Raising the budget is also sensible when downtime is expensive, when you need a fresh battery, or when the software you use has strict operating-system requirements. A cheaper Chromebook remains a good answer when your work is genuinely web-based and the model has a substantial update period remaining.
Bottom-line buying rule
Start with the software you must run, then select the operating system, exact processor and support horizon. Treat every under-$150 listing as an individual used-electronics transaction: verify the configuration, battery, charger, condition, seller, warranty and returns, and test the machine immediately. The refurbished ThinkPad Yoga 11e Gen 5 and Dell Chromebook 3100 demonstrate what may appear under the ceiling, but neither listing alone establishes a universally “best” laptop.
