Short answer: If you want to reach Kingdom Hearts III while still following the essential plot, play or watch the story of Kingdom Hearts, Re:Chain of Memories, Kingdom Hearts II, Birth by Sleep, and Dream Drop Distance. Treat Re:coded as a recap, and watch the 358/2 Days story if its original Nintendo DS gameplay is not for you. The oldest-era χ/Union χ material can wait until after KHIII if your goal is only the numbered saga, while Re Mind and Melody of Memory are needed for story that occurs during or after KHIII.
These are editorial priorities based on Square Enix’s official plot summaries, not an official list of “safe to skip” games. A title can be optional for reaching one ending and still contain important character or world-building context.

- Kingdom Hearts (Final Mix version where available)
- Re:Chain of Memories
- Kingdom Hearts II
- Birth by Sleep
- Dream Drop Distance HD
- Kingdom Hearts III
Fit the 358/2 Days story before or around Kingdom Hearts II. If you do not want its original DS combat and mission structure, use the cinematic presentation included in the modern collection or a reliable story recap. Recap Re:coded before moving on. Add 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage immediately before KHIII if you want the bridge into its opening situation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This route omits no plot prerequisite that KHIII routinely assumes, but it does postpone the ancient history in χ/Union χ. That material matters much more once your endpoint is the wider continuing mythology rather than KHIII alone.

Why the first five games form the essential spine
Kingdom Hearts: the foundation
The original game establishes Sora, Riku, Kairi, the Keyblade, the worlds connected by the doorways, and the central conflict involving the Heartless. Later games assume you understand these relationships and the consequences of the first journey. Skipping it leaves the opening premise of the entire series unexplained, so this is not a sensible cut for a first-time player.
Re:Chain of Memories: the bridge many players underestimate
Re:Chain of Memories takes place after the first game in Castle Oblivion. Its defining plot device is memory manipulation: Sora’s recollections are altered while he climbs the castle, and Riku experiences his own route through the same crisis. The story ends with Sora entering a long sleep so his memories can be restored.
That setup directly explains why Sora’s circumstances, abilities and relationships look different at the start of Kingdom Hearts II. You do not have to enjoy the card-based combat, but you should not skip the narrative. If the mechanics are a barrier, watch a complete plot version that includes both Sora’s and Riku’s stories rather than a short synopsis limited to the opening floors.
Kingdom Hearts II: the second mainline payoff
KHII begins after the Castle Oblivion events and introduces the Organization XIII conflict, Roxas’s identity and the deeper connection between Nobodies and the people Sora already knows. It also pays off character context that is developed in 358/2 Days. Because KHIII builds on the identities and alliances established here, skipping KHII would remove a major part of the series’ emotional and plot foundation.

Birth by Sleep: the prequel that explains the older conflict
Birth by Sleep follows Terra, Ventus and Aqua before the original game. Their three campaigns show an earlier Keyblade conflict and explain how several mentors, villains and protagonists became connected. It is not a side story that can be replaced by a short character list: each campaign supplies a different perspective on the same crisis.
Play all three routes if possible. Their order changes emphasis, so follow the in-game recommendations or a consistent guide rather than jumping between chapters. The knowledge gained here is used by later games when they discuss lost friends, damaged worlds and the unresolved fate of the trio.
Dream Drop Distance: the immediate pre-KHIII setup
Dream Drop Distance advances the later conflict and places Sora and Riku in a new examination that leads directly toward the confrontation in KHIII. It introduces the structure of the opposing forces and the strategic situation that KHIII assumes. Treating it as optional creates the largest continuity gap immediately before the numbered finale.
Stories you can watch, recap or postpone
358/2 Days: optional gameplay, valuable story
The title covers the 358-day period centered on Roxas, Axel and Xion. Its official synopsis emphasizes their friendship and the difficult choices surrounding it. Those relationships add substantial context to KHII, especially if you want Roxas’s opening and later appearances to have their full emotional weight.
The original DS version has mission-based gameplay and technical limits that some newcomers find dated. That is a reason to change the format, not to erase the story. The HD collection presents the material as a cinematic experience; watching that version is preferable to skipping the characters entirely. If you are rushing, place it before KHII or immediately after KHII and understand that some KHII scenes will land differently when viewed first.

Re:coded: lower priority, not meaningless
Re:coded revisits earlier events through a data version of Sora. Its plot also deals with pain connected to Sora, so it contributes ideas that recur later even though it is less important for reaching KHIII than the mainline entries. A player on a strict schedule can read a detailed recap and move on; calling it filler would discard its stated premise and character implications.

The useful minimum is a recap that explains the data-Sora storyline, the message that prompts the investigation and the unresolved suffering the game identifies.
χ and Union χ: the oldest era
χ (often written as Chi) and its related Union χ material tell the oldest-era story in the series. They establish ancient Keyblade history and events far removed from Sora’s first adventure. If your stopping point is the KHIII credits, you can defer them without losing the immediate chain from the original game through KHIII.
Readers who want the broadest lore should catch up before treating the series as complete. Because the original mobile presentation and service history make a straightforward playthrough difficult, a reputable story compilation is a practical format. Keep the distinction clear: deferring ancient history is a time-management choice, not evidence that the material has no bearing on the larger mythology.
0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage: a short connective chapter
This episode follows Aqua and functions as a transition toward KHIII. It is useful context for Aqua’s condition and for the situation that KHIII presents at the start. It is much shorter than a numbered entry, so include it if you have access to the 2.8 collection; if you cannot, a concise story recap covers the connection without blocking progress.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Re Mind: additional KHIII story
Re Mind adds material during and after KHIII’s climax. It fills in actions and perspectives that the base ending does not show and extends the immediate aftermath. You can finish KHIII without it, but doing so means accepting that you have not seen all of the story attached to that climax. Play it after completing the base game so its structure and revelations are easier to follow.
Melody of Memory: recap plus Kairi’s next chapter
Melody of Memory retells much of the saga through a rhythm-game format, then adds Kairi’s perspective on what follows KHIII. The recap makes it useful for refreshing the timeline, but its new scenes are the reason not to dismiss it as only a music collection. Skip it only if you are deliberately stopping before post-KHIII material; include it when you want the next narrative lead.
Do you have to play every game before KHIII?
No. You do not need to play every release interactively, and you do not need to finish every side game’s combat systems. You do need to consume the important story in the first game, Re:Chain of Memories, KHII, Birth by Sleep and Dream Drop Distance. The safest compromises are format changes: watch 358/2 Days, recap Re:coded, and defer χ/Union χ when KHIII is your endpoint.
This distinction matters because “skip the game” can mean three different things:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Skip the gameplay: use a cinematic compilation or story video while retaining the plot.
- Skip the title temporarily: postpone it until after KHIII, as with the oldest-era material.
- Skip the story entirely: accept missing character motives, historical context or post-KHIII developments.
How to choose what to cut when time is limited
Rate each title against four questions before deciding:
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Does it directly set up the next numbered game? If yes, keep it. This is why Re:Chain of Memories and Dream Drop Distance remain high priority.
- Does the next game assume its character context? If yes, keep the story even if you change the format. This is the case with 358/2 Days and the Roxas, Axel and Xion material.
- Where is your endpoint? KHIII allows you to postpone the oldest-era chronology. A broader lore endpoint does not.
- Can the collection present it as cinematics? If so, watching can remove a gameplay obstacle without creating a story gap.
Use the strictest route only when you genuinely need to save time. Kingdom Hearts often reveals information through character reactions and repeated motifs rather than one explanatory scene, so a two-minute summary can omit the reason an event matters. For a recap, choose one that identifies the major characters, their goals, the final state of each arc and how it leads into the next title.
Which collections contain the core games?
Square Enix lists Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX with Kingdom Hearts Final Mix, Re:Chain of Memories, 358/2 Days, Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, Birth by Sleep Final Mix and Re:coded among its included works. In that package, 358/2 Days and Re:coded are presented as cinematic material rather than the original versions of their handheld gameplay.
Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue includes Dream Drop Distance HD, 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage and χ Back Cover. χ Back Cover is a film about the ancient Foreteller era; it is related to the χ story but is not a substitute for every piece of Union χ history.

What changes as the series approaches its 25th anniversary?
Square Enix says the series reaches its 25th anniversary in March 2027. Its anniversary material describes χ as the oldest-era story and summarizes Birth by Sleep around Terra, Ventus, Aqua and the Keyblade conflict. That context makes the older titles increasingly relevant to lore-focused readers, but it does not create a new requirement for finishing KHIII. No future release date or future-story obligation is established here, so plan around the games currently available.
Recommended plans by reader type
If you want the fastest coherent KHIII run
Play Kingdom Hearts, watch Re:Chain of Memories if necessary, play KHII, watch 358/2 Days, play Birth by Sleep and Dream Drop Distance, then play KHIII. Recap Re:coded and include 0.2 only if you want its transition.
If character relationships matter most
Keep the full 358/2 Days story and all three Birth by Sleep campaigns. Those are the two most damaging stories to remove while trying to preserve the emotional logic of later scenes.
Recommended Free Tools
If you want the complete known mythology
Follow the core route, add χ/Union χ and χ Back Cover, then finish KHIII with Re Mind and continue to Melody of Memory. Use cinematic or recap formats where the original platform is inconvenient, but do not confuse an accessible presentation with a lesser story.
