Start with Kingdom Hearts, then play the series in release order. Use the Final Mix edition if that is the version available on your platform. Release order preserves the way the story, characters and major revelations were introduced, while chronological order opens with distant backstory that was written to be understood later.

For a first playthrough, use this sequence: Kingdom Hearts → Chain of Memories → Kingdom Hearts II → 358/2 Days → Birth by Sleep → Re:coded → Dream Drop Distance → χ Back Cover and 0.2 Birth by Sleep → Kingdom Hearts III → Re Mind → Melody of Memory. Some entries may be presented as films or recaps rather than fully playable games, so check the contents of the collection you buy.

Why release order is the best first-playthrough order

Kingdom Hearts is a connected narrative rather than a set of independent Disney-themed adventures. Characters, identities and conflicts introduced in one entry are repeatedly reinterpreted in later games. Square Enix’s official timeline places Chain of Memories after the first game’s separation of Sora, Riku and the King, and places Kingdom Hearts II after Sora’s year of sleep. Later entries explicitly refer back to those events.

Playing in release order lets you encounter each explanation at the point the series originally expected. You see a mystery before a prequel explains it, experience a character’s first appearance before learning that character’s history, and understand why a later game assumes knowledge of an earlier conflict. That staged context is a major part of the series’ emotional effect.

Square Enix Holdings reported more than 38 million Kingdom Hearts units in global package shipments and digital sales as of the end of June 2025. That is a franchise-wide publisher figure, not sales of any individual game, but it helps explain why the series now spans remakes, collections, story films and side entries.

Why starting with a prequel can be confusing

Birth by Sleep and the ancient χ-era material answer questions that the original game deliberately leaves open. Starting there means meeting important people and concepts without the framing that later releases supplied first. You can follow the plot, but several reveals lose their intended impact and some relationships feel important before you know why.

Why Chain of Memories should not be skipped

Chain of Memories is the bridge between the first Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II. It explains what happens after Sora, Donald and Goofy leave the first game, why Sora enters a year-long sleep, and how Riku’s path diverges. Skipping it makes the opening of Kingdom Hearts II look like an unexplained reset.

Recommended first-playthrough sequence

The sequence below follows release-era storytelling while keeping connected story material together. It is a play order, not a claim that every item is a full, separately playable release in every collection.

Step Game or story What it contributes First-playthrough note
1 Kingdom Hearts Introduces Sora, Riku, Kairi, the Keyblade, the worlds and the central conflict. Begin here. Choose Final Mix when available.
2 Chain of Memories Bridges the first game and Kingdom Hearts II; follows the group’s journey through Castle Oblivion. Its card-based combat is unusual, but its story context matters.
3 Kingdom Hearts II Continues after Sora’s year of sleep and expands the conflict involving Organization XIII. Play before consuming the 358/2 Days story if you want its reveals in release order.
4 358/2 Days Follows Roxas, Axel and Xion across Roxas’s 358 days. Collections may present it as a story movie or recap rather than a complete playable game.
5 Birth by Sleep Shows the earlier conflict involving Terra, Aqua and Ventus. Its prequel setting makes more sense after the first three entries.
6 Re:coded Continues the post-Kingdom Hearts II thread through a digital record of earlier events. Check whether your collection includes playable chapters or a story presentation.
7 Dream Drop Distance Sets up the next major conflict and the Mark of Mastery exam. Play it before Kingdom Hearts III.
8 χ Back Cover and 0.2 Birth by Sleep χ Back Cover covers ancient events through the Foretellers; 0.2 follows Aqua and leads directly toward Kingdom Hearts III. These are often grouped in HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue; verify the presentation included.
9 Kingdom Hearts III Brings the long-running conflict to its main numbered-game conclusion. Play the base game before its Re Mind expansion.
10 Re Mind Adds a scenario and perspective that follow the events of Kingdom Hearts III. Treat it as post-game content, not an alternative opening.
11 Melody of Memory Recounts key events through a rhythm-game format and advances the post-Kingdom Hearts III thread. Leave it until the end of this sequence.

What to know before each entry

Kingdom Hearts

The original game establishes the vocabulary used by every sequel: the Keyblade, Heartless, worlds connected by darkness, and the relationships between Sora, Riku and Kairi. The original release dates to March 2002, according to Square Enix Holdings’ 2025 annual report. Later Final Mix editions add content and balancing changes; if your platform offers Final Mix, it is the practical choice for a new player.

Chain of Memories

This entry takes place immediately after the first game. Sora’s memories are manipulated inside Castle Oblivion, while Riku follows a parallel route. Combat uses cards and room-building rather than the first game’s direct command flow. If the system is not your preference, a story presentation can still convey important plot developments, but do not assume that every collection supplies the same version or format.

Kingdom Hearts II

The game opens after Sora’s year of sleep, with Roxas as the initial viewpoint character. That opening is intentionally slow and mysterious. It pays off the events of Chain of Memories and introduces Organization XIII in a much larger role.

358/2 Days

358/2 Days focuses on Roxas, Axel and Xion during the 358 days referenced by its title. Many players prefer to experience it after Kingdom Hearts II, because Kingdom Hearts II reveals information that the later story presentation can reframe. This is a reveal-preserving adjustment within release order, not a claim that 358/2 Days belongs earlier in the first-time sequence.

Birth by Sleep

This prequel follows Terra, Aqua and Ventus and takes place well before the original Kingdom Hearts. It supplies historical context for later conflicts, but its emotional weight is stronger once you already understand the series’ main cast and stakes.

Re:coded

Re:coded follows a digital reconstruction of events recorded in Jiminy’s journal. Its function is partly connective: it points toward questions that Dream Drop Distance develops. In collections, this material may be delivered as a movie or edited story rather than the original game, so verify the listing before expecting a full campaign.

Dream Drop Distance

Sora and Riku undertake the Mark of Mastery exam, and the game introduces rules and identities that lead directly into the modern conflict. It is the most important pre-Kingdom Hearts III stop after Birth by Sleep and the intervening story material.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

χ Back Cover and 0.2 Birth by Sleep

χ Back Cover presents ancient events surrounding the Foretellers and the earliest history of the setting. 0.2 Birth by Sleep follows Aqua and functions as a short lead-in to Kingdom Hearts III. They are related in collection packaging, but they are different kinds of experiences; one is primarily a cinematic story and the other is a playable episode.

Kingdom Hearts III and Re Mind

Kingdom Hearts III resolves the main numbered-game arc after the preparation in Dream Drop Distance. Play the base game first. Re Mind revisits the ending from an additional perspective and adds post-game material, so starting with it can spoil the intended progression.

Melody of Memory

This rhythm game recaps much of the series while continuing the story after Kingdom Hearts III. It works best as the final stop in this first-pass sequence, when the events it summarizes are already familiar.

Release order versus chronological order

Release order means the order in which audiences received the games. Chronological order means the order in which events occur inside the fictional history. They are not interchangeable: the chronological sequence begins with ancient χ-era events and Birth by Sleep, long before the March 2002 release of the original game.

Story chronology Main setting or purpose Why it is usually better as a replay
χ Back Cover and related χ-era material Ancient history involving the Foretellers and the earliest Keyblade conflicts. It assumes interest in lore that later games introduced gradually.
Birth by Sleep Events involving Terra, Aqua and Ventus before the original game. Its revelations work better after you know the original cast and conflicts.
Kingdom Hearts Sora’s first journey through connected worlds. It is the foundation of the audience’s understanding, not just an early date on the timeline.
Chain of Memories The Castle Oblivion aftermath of the first game. It explains the transition into Kingdom Hearts II.
358/2 Days Roxas, Axel and Xion during the period surrounding Kingdom Hearts II. Its meaning changes depending on which Kingdom Hearts II revelations you already know.
Kingdom Hearts II Sora returns after a year of sleep and confronts Organization XIII. Its opening and reveals were designed for players who had encountered the earlier games.
Re:coded A post-Kingdom Hearts II investigation using a digital journal. It points toward later plot developments.
Dream Drop Distance The Mark of Mastery exam and preparation for the next conflict. It assumes broad knowledge of the earlier cast.
0.2 Birth by Sleep Aqua’s story leading toward Kingdom Hearts III. It is a direct lead-in after the broader setup.
Kingdom Hearts III The main numbered-game conclusion. It depends on the accumulated story rather than functioning as a standalone reboot.
Re Mind Additional events after and around the ending of Kingdom Hearts III. It contains material that presumes you have completed the base game.
Melody of Memory Post-Kingdom Hearts III recap and continuation. Its recap format is most useful once the original events are known.

When chronological order is the right choice

Use chronological order for a second playthrough, a lore-focused run, or a viewing session where you specifically want the fictional history to unfold from its earliest point. It can also help a returning fan reconstruct the timeline after finishing the release-order route.

Why chronology is not a universal “correct” order

Several chronological stops are story films, mobile-era material or legacy releases whose accessibility varies by platform. The order also moves major context forward before the games that originally established it. Calling chronology definitive ignores the difference between when an event happened in-universe and when the audience was meant to learn about it.

A practical first-time plan

  1. Choose the original game first. Select Kingdom Hearts, preferably Final Mix where offered.
  2. Finish the bridge before the sequel. Play or watch the available Chain of Memories version before starting Kingdom Hearts II.
  3. Keep a reveal-preserving placement for 358/2 Days. Experience its story after Kingdom Hearts II unless you are deliberately following a different personal route.
  4. Use the collection’s presentation notes. Mark each item as playable, cinematic or recap before you begin; do not assume a compilation turns every historical release into a full game.
  5. Complete the pre-Kingdom Hearts III material. Include Birth by Sleep, Re:coded, Dream Drop Distance, χ Back Cover and 0.2 Birth by Sleep in the order listed above.
  6. Reserve post-game material for after the ending. Play Re Mind only after Kingdom Hearts III, then finish with Melody of Memory.

Current collection and platform considerations

Square Enix’s announcement dated October 8, 2026 lists Kingdom Hearts Collection [I–III]. The bundle contains HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX, HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind. The announcement identifies PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and Nintendo Switch 2; it also lists HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX for the original Nintendo Switch.

The same announcement describes the combined collection as a download product. That does not establish a physical edition, and availability can differ by territory, storefront and account region. Confirm the exact product page for your device before purchasing.

Decision What to verify Why it matters
Platform PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Nintendo Switch 2, or original Nintendo Switch for HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX. The listed bundle and individual collection availability are not identical across devices.
Included item Whether the page lists a playable game, a cinematic story presentation or a recap. 358/2 Days and Re:coded may not be supplied as full playable campaigns in every collection.
Edition Final Mix, Re Mind inclusion and the exact regional package name. Similar-looking listings can contain different content.
Delivery format Download versus physical media. The October 8, 2026 combined-collection announcement describes a download version; do not infer a disc or cartridge listing.
Language and region Supported text and audio languages, store territory and account compatibility. These details can vary even when the collection title is the same.
Scope One game, one collection or the complete I–III bundle. Buying only the first title is reasonable for testing the series; the full route requires the connecting entries.

PC storefront timing

Square Enix’s announcement says the Steam version was already available under the name Integrum Masterpiece and that the Epic Games Store version was due October 9, 2026. These storefront details are date-sensitive; check the live store page for current availability, edition contents and regional pricing.

Nintendo Switch historical context

A Square Enix announcement from January 2022 described the Nintendo Switch versions available at that time as cloud versions and advised a stable, persistent high-speed internet connection. That statement is historical context and should not be treated as a technical description of the 2026 collection. Read the current product page for the delivery method of the version you intend to buy.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Starting with Birth by Sleep because it is a prequel

A prequel date does not make a prequel the best introduction. Start with the original game unless your goal is specifically a chronology-first replay.

Skipping every side entry

Not every side entry requires the same amount of play time, but several supply transitions that numbered games assume you know. At minimum, do not skip the story of Chain of Memories before Kingdom Hearts II or the pre-Kingdom Hearts III setup represented by Dream Drop Distance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming a movie is optional because it is not playable

A cinematic presentation can still contain canonical story information. Treat the format as a convenience difference, not proof that the material is irrelevant.

Watching 358/2 Days before Kingdom Hearts II without considering spoilers

Chronologically, its events overlap the period around Kingdom Hearts II. For a first run, place it after Kingdom Hearts II so the later story does not disclose its information before the original game’s intended reveal.

Assuming one store listing covers every region

Collection names, included content, platform support and delivery formats can differ by territory. Check the device-specific, region-specific listing immediately before purchase.

Which order should different readers choose?

Your goal Recommended route Reason
First time with the series Release order beginning with Kingdom Hearts Preserves the intended introductions and reveals.
Complete lore replay Chronological order beginning with χ-era material Follows fictional history from its earliest known events.
You dislike unusual combat systems Release order, using an available story presentation where needed You retain the narrative bridge without forcing every gameplay format.
You want only to test the series Start with Kingdom Hearts rather than buying the entire bundle immediately The first game is the correct measure of whether the series’ style suits you.
You are returning after a long break Replay in release order, then use chronology as a reference It restores the context in which the major mysteries were introduced.

Final recommendation

For a new player, begin with Kingdom Hearts and follow release order: Chain of Memories, Kingdom Hearts II, 358/2 Days, Birth by Sleep, Re:coded, Dream Drop Distance, χ Back Cover/0.2 Birth by Sleep, Kingdom Hearts III, Re Mind and Melody of Memory. Choose chronological order only when your priority is the in-universe timeline or a lore replay. Before buying, verify your platform, region, download or physical format, and whether each story is playable or presented as a film.
