Start in the book itself: tap the top of the Kindle e-reader screen, select Aa (or Page Display on some software versions), and adjust text size, font, boldness, spacing, margins, alignment, orientation, theme, and background. Then set brightness for the room you are in. Change one control at a time so you can tell which combination you actually prefer. Menus and available options vary by Kindle model, software, book format, and whether you are using an e-reader or a Kindle reading app.

Open the right menu first

These instructions apply to a Kindle e-reader while a book is open. Tap near the top edge of the page to reveal the reading toolbar, then tap Aa or Page Display. Amazon groups text controls under labels such as Font, Layout, More, and Themes. Your selections generally carry across books, although a particular title or device may restrict some choices.

Do not confuse book text with the Kindle’s interface. The labels on the Home screen, menus, and library can have a separate device-wide size control, while the words in a book are changed from the reading menu or with a pinch gesture.

Make the text itself easier to read

Increase book text size gradually

In Aa, use the font-size controls to enlarge or reduce the words until you can read at a natural distance without constantly leaning toward the screen. There is no universally correct size. A larger setting makes characters more prominent but also puts fewer words on each page, so page turns become more frequent. A smaller setting shows more text at once but can make individual letters feel cramped.

#1 Best Overall
Amazon Kindle 16 GB (2024 model) - Light and compact, with fast page turns, and high contrast ratio - Matcha
  • Light and compact - With adjustable brightness, high contrast ratio, and fast page turns.
  • Effortless reading in any light - Read comfortably with a 6“ glare-free display, adjustable front light—now 25% brighter at max setting—and dark mode.
  • Escape into your books - Tune out messages, emails, and social media with a distraction-free reading experience.
  • Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
  • Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.

While reading, you can also place two fingers on the page and spread them apart to enlarge the type, or pinch inward to reduce it. This gesture changes the book’s text size, not the size of Kindle menus.

Use the device-wide text-size setting when supported

Kindle E-Reader 11th Generation and later models, Kindle Scribe, and Kindle Colorsoft support a device-level font-size option. From the Home screen, open Settings → Screen and brightness → Display & text size. This changes supported interface text throughout the device. For the words in a book, continue to use Aa or the pinch gesture. Older e-readers may not show this device-wide path.

Try a different font or modest boldness

The Font area lets you choose among the typefaces supplied by the device and, when permitted, a publisher’s embedded font. A publisher font may appear because the book includes its own design; it is not evidence that the typeface is better for every reader. Compare a clear font at your chosen size, then adjust Boldness by a small step if the strokes look too faint or too heavy. Make the change while looking at ordinary paragraphs rather than a title page, since decorative headings can distort your impression.

Open up crowded pages with spacing and margins

Under the layout controls, adjust Line spacing, Paragraph spacing, and Margins when lines or blocks of text feel packed together. More line or paragraph space creates a clearer visual separation but reduces the amount of text visible at once. Wider margins can make a long line feel less imposing; narrower margins increase the usable text area. Because these controls interact with font size, change one setting, read several pages, and then decide whether another adjustment is still necessary.

Test alignment and orientation

Supported models offer alignment choices and portrait or landscape orientation. Left alignment may give you a consistent starting edge, while another alignment can match a book’s design. Landscape orientation produces longer lines and fewer lines per screen; portrait usually produces shorter lines and a taller page. Treat both as personal layout choices, not guaranteed solutions. Some titles override alignment or orientation because of their design.

Use themes and background options where available

The Themes or Page Display area may provide saved combinations of font and layout settings, along with page-color or background choices. Theme names and the number of available presets differ by model and software. If you select a theme, inspect its individual font, spacing, and margin values afterward so you know what changed.

Set brightness, warmth, and dark mode for the current room

Brightness is a device-level control rather than a book-format control. Open Quick Actions by swiping down from the top of the screen, then move the brightness slider. You can also reach it through the device’s Settings. Set it for the light around you: a dim room generally calls for a lower screen level than a bright room, but the comfortable point is personal.

Kindles that include an adjustable front light may show a Warmth slider in Quick Actions or light settings. Warmth controls are model-dependent, so its absence does not indicate a fault. Dark Mode, which reverses the usual page and text colors, is likewise limited to compatible models. Neither feature is available on every Kindle generation, and Amazon’s support guidance does not establish a universal sleep, eye-comfort, or reading-performance benefit. Use these controls because you prefer the appearance in a particular environment.

Check whether the book allows visual changes

Reflowable books

Reflowable content lets the text rearrange itself when you change font size, typeface, spacing, margins, or orientation. Most ordinary Kindle novels and many standard nonfiction titles behave this way. The page count and line breaks can change as the settings change; that is expected.

Fixed-layout books

Fixed-layout titles preserve a designed page image or page geometry. Amazon identifies print-replica books, many comics and manga volumes, and some textbooks as examples. In these books, the Aa controls may be reduced, disabled, or unable to alter the page in the way you expect. Look at the title’s accessibility information on its product or library details page to see whether it is reflowable or fixed-layout before troubleshooting the device.

When a control is missing

A missing font, spacing, color, or orientation option usually has one of three explanations: the Kindle model does not support it, the software version presents it under another menu, or the book’s fixed layout prevents it. Check the model-specific settings first, then test a known reflowable book. If the option works there, the original title is imposing the limitation rather than the e-reader malfunctioning.

If you read in a Kindle app instead

Kindle apps on phones, tablets, and computers have their own reading controls. Open a book and use the app’s Aa reading-settings panel; do not follow e-reader swipe paths as though they were identical. Depending on platform and app version, Amazon documents controls for font size and type, line and margin spacing, brightness, page color, themes, and alignment.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 16GB (2024 model) – 7" glare-free display and weeks of battery life – Raspberry
  • Our fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever – The next-generation 7“ Paperwhite display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns.
  • Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
  • Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
  • Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
  • Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.

Supported apps can also include accessibility tools such as a reading ruler and Assistive Reader. Word Wise is listed for Android. These options are platform-specific, so an iOS, Android, Windows, or macOS app may show a different set of controls. If a feature is important to you, check the app’s current accessibility menu rather than assuming that an e-reader feature is present.

A practical adjustment sequence

Use this order to avoid changing several variables at once:

  1. Choose a representative page. Use normal body text in the book, not a cover, table of contents, or illustrated page.
  2. Set text size. Increase or decrease it until the letter shapes are comfortable at your usual reading distance.
  3. Choose font and boldness. Compare one or two clear fonts, then make only a modest boldness change if needed.
  4. Open the page layout. Adjust line and paragraph spacing, followed by margins, if the page still feels crowded.
  5. Try alignment or orientation. Keep the option that suits your preferred page shape; restore the previous choice if it makes lines feel awkward.
  6. Set brightness. Match the screen to the room, then add warmth or enable Dark Mode only if your model provides those controls and you like the result.
  7. Read several pages before judging. A setting that looks appealing on one page may feel different in dialogue, lists, or long paragraphs.

How to choose between the main trade-offs

Control What changes What to watch for
Text size Character scale and words per page Larger text is more prominent but shows less content at once.
Font and boldness Letter shape and stroke weight Embedded publisher fonts may limit the choices; heavier is not automatically clearer.
Line or paragraph spacing Vertical separation between lines and blocks More space can open a dense page while increasing page turns.
Margins Width of the text column Wider margins shorten lines and reduce the usable text area.
Alignment How lines sit between the margins Availability and behavior depend on the title and model.
Portrait or landscape Page shape and line length Landscape may create long lines; portrait usually gives a taller, narrower page.
Brightness and warmth Front-light intensity and color temperature Warmth is available only on compatible models; set both for the current room.
Background or Dark Mode Page and text color treatment Dark Mode is model-dependent and is a preference, not a guaranteed health feature.

Troubleshoot common problems

The text-size option does not appear

First identify whether you are trying to change book text or interface text. For book text, open Aa in a reflowable title. For interface text, look for Settings → Screen and brightness → Display & text size, a path supported on 11th Generation and newer e-readers, Scribe, and Colorsoft. If neither path exists, your model may not support device-wide sizing.

The page does not change after an adjustment

Test the same control in another, reflowable book. A print replica, comic, manga volume, or textbook with fixed layout can preserve its page design and ignore reflow settings. The title’s accessibility information can confirm this behavior.

  • Adapts to your surroundings – The auto-adjusting front light lets you read in the brightest sunlight or late into the night.

Brightness or warmth is unavailable

Open Quick Actions and check the light controls. Brightness is broadly available, but warmth and Dark Mode require compatible hardware and software. If the slider is absent after a restart and software update, consult the model’s support documentation rather than expecting every Kindle to expose the same controls.

The app does not match the e-reader

Use the app’s own Aa panel and accessibility settings. Feature lists differ by platform; Android, for example, may show Word Wise, while another app build may not show the same assistive options.

Keep expectations realistic

These controls let you tailor appearance and layout; they do not turn a fixed-layout page into reflowable text, and they cannot make every book use every font or spacing option. There is no setting combination established as universally easiest. A useful setup is the one that remains comfortable across the kinds of pages you actually read, your device’s supported features, and the lighting conditions in which you use it. If reading difficulty persists, settings are not a medical diagnosis or treatment, and professional advice may be appropriate.
