Start by identifying your Kindle Scribe model, then adjust screen brightness and any available warmth control, followed by text size and reading layout. After that, place the writing toolbar where your hand expects it and review accessibility and sharing options. This order prioritizes comfort and the controls most likely to affect every reading or writing session, without pretending that one brightness level, font size, or toolbar side suits everyone.
Check which Kindle Scribe you own before changing settings
Amazon lists several Scribe release families, and their menus and feature availability are not identical. The current device-identification information includes a 2024 Kindle Scribe, a third-generation Scribe released in 2025, and Kindle Scribe Colorsoft released in 2025. Before following a model-specific instruction, confirm which generation appears in your device information or in Amazon’s device-identification guidance.
This matters most for warmth controls, note-conversion features, searchable PDFs and other newer options. A setting described in Kindle help may appear under a different label, or not appear at all, on an earlier Scribe. Amazon also updates Kindle software, so treat the wording below as a map to the relevant control rather than a guarantee that every screen will look identical.
| Release family | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|
| 2024 Kindle Scribe | Uses the Scribe reading and writing controls, but some newer conversion or searchable-PDF options may not be offered. |
| Third-generation Kindle Scribe (2025) | Supports features Amazon identifies as available on Scribe models released in 2025 or later, subject to current software. |
| Kindle Scribe Colorsoft (2025) | Is a separate Scribe release family; do not assume that controls documented for another display or generation are identical. |
If a menu path in this guide does not match your screen, stop before changing anything and verify the model and software version first. That avoids treating a missing feature as a fault.

Which Kindle Scribe settings should you change first?
- Screen comfort: set brightness for the room and check whether your model exposes warmth.
- Reading display: choose a text size, font, spacing and margins that let you read without strain.
- Writing workflow: move the toolbar to the side that fits your grip and configure the tools you use most.
- Accessibility: review VoiceView and display controls if you need spoken feedback or clearer text.
- Sharing: understand the available export and the seven-day email-link limit before you rely on collaboration.
This is an editorial setup order, not a universal recommendation from Amazon. The official support material documents available controls; it does not establish one ideal value for every reader.
How do I adjust brightness and warmth on my Kindle Scribe?
Use this as the first hands-on comfort adjustment. From the Home screen, swipe down to open Quick Actions, or open Settings. Amazon’s Kindle help places the display controls under Screen and brightness. Adjust brightness with the on-screen scale or the plus and minus buttons.
Choose for the lighting around you
- In a bright room or outdoors, increase brightness only until the page is easy to read; excessive brightness can make a dark room uncomfortable.
- In a dim room, lower brightness until the page no longer looks glaring. The correct level depends on your eyes and the surrounding light.
- Change the setting again when your environment changes instead of treating one number as permanent.
Warmth is model-dependent
Some Scribe models expose a Warmth control alongside brightness under Screen and brightness. If your device has that slider, adjust it to a tone that feels comfortable in your lighting. If it is absent, do not assume that you missed a hidden switch: Amazon documents warmth as model-dependent. The absence of the control is not, by itself, evidence of a hardware problem.

How do I make the text bigger?
For device-wide font sizing on supported models, open Settings > Screen and brightness > Display & text size. Increase or decrease the size and then return to a book to check whether the result is comfortable.

Use the Aa menu for a particular book
While reading, tap the top of the screen and select Aa. Depending on the device and the book, Amazon lists controls for font family, size, boldness, line spacing, paragraph spacing, margins, orientation, alignment, progress tracking, clock display and saved themes. You may not see every choice in every title.
Book formatting can limit what the Aa menu can change. A publisher’s fixed layout, image-heavy page or other formatting may remove or constrain normal font controls. If a setting works in one book but not another, check the second book’s format before troubleshooting the Scribe itself.
| Reading choice | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Larger font | Small type causes eye strain or you read without glasses. | Fewer words fit on each page, so page turns increase. |
| More line or paragraph spacing | Dense lines are hard to track. | More vertical space is used, reducing text per page. |
| Wider margins | You want a less crowded page or room to hold the device. | The text column becomes narrower. |
| Different font or boldness | Letter shapes or thin strokes are difficult to distinguish. | Some books or formats may restrict the available choices. |
| Landscape orientation | A wider line or two-column-style reading arrangement feels easier. | It changes the page shape and may not suit every book layout. |
Saved themes can help you switch between reading contexts, such as a brighter daytime setup and a lower-light setup, when your model and software provide that option. Create a theme only after you have tested the individual display controls; otherwise it is harder to tell which change improved readability.
How should you set up the Kindle Scribe writing toolbar?
Configure the toolbar before you develop a daily notebook habit. The writing toolbar includes Pen, Highlighter, Eraser and Undo/Redo. Select the tool you need, then double-tap Pen, Highlighter or Eraser to open that tool’s custom options.

- A digital notebook for all your writing needs - Replace your stack of notebooks with a single device purpose-built for writing, reading, and thinking. No notifications or social media.

- Easily import and mark up documents - Import documents and PDFs using Send to Kindle, and mark them up directly on the page.
- Capture insights as you read – Just start writing on a book's page and Active Canvas will create space for your notes. Expand the margins to add more notes, or collapse them to see the original page.
Put the toolbar on the side that matches your grip
Amazon allows the toolbar to sit on the left or right side of the screen. Right-handed writers often prefer to keep controls away from the writing hand, while left-handed writers may prefer the opposite arrangement, but hand position, notebook orientation and the way you hold the Scribe matter more than handedness alone. Move it, write a page, and move it again if your wrist repeatedly brushes the controls.
The pointer tool can be useful when you need to indicate something without leaving a permanent mark. A finger swipe can turn pages even when a writing tool is selected, which lets you keep the pen active while moving through a notebook or document.
Test the writing area with your actual cover
Amazon warns that some third-party covers can interfere with screen writing areas. If a strip or corner does not respond, temporarily remove the cover and test the same area. If writing works with the cover removed, the cover is the likely source of the obstruction; use the Scribe without it or replace it with a compatible design. Do not erase notes or reset the device before performing this simple check.
Which accessibility settings deserve an early check?
Accessibility is not an optional final polish if it affects whether you can read or navigate comfortably. Amazon’s device information lists VoiceView support for Scribe models, and its setup guidance links to VoiceView, font-size and reading-display help.

VoiceView
If spoken feedback is important to you, open the accessibility controls and review VoiceView instructions for your model. The exact steps and available gestures can differ by device and software. Enable it only after reading the device-specific guidance so you know how to navigate menus and turn it off when needed.
Display and text controls
Use the font-size path and the Aa reading menu described above to improve legibility. There is no single configuration that Amazon identifies as best for every person; choose the combination that matches your vision, lighting and reading distance. If another person uses the Scribe, consider saving a separate reading theme where supported rather than changing a shared setup every time.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I share notes from my Scribe?
Sharing is easiest when you decide what the recipient actually needs. In a notebook’s sharing controls, choose the email-sharing option and enter the recipient’s address. Amazon says shared content is delivered through an email link, and that link expires after seven days. Tell the recipient to open or download the material before the expiration window closes.

| Read the original handwriting | A handwritten notebook export or PDF. | The result preserves the page appearance rather than creating editable typed text. |
| Search or copy the writing | A searchable-PDF or handwriting-conversion option, when offered. | Amazon identifies some conversion and searchable-PDF options as limited to Scribe models released in 2025 or later. |
| Review a document quickly | Email sharing with the format available on your model. | The emailed link expires after seven days. |
If a searchable or conversion option is missing, first verify that your Scribe is a 2025-or-later model. On an earlier release, the limitation may be part of the model’s feature set rather than a temporary error. Conversion can also be a poor fit when the original page contains diagrams, unusual handwriting or mixed markups; send the handwritten version when preserving the page matters more than searchable text.

Choosing settings by situation
| Situation | Settings to review first | Decision to make |
|---|---|---|
| Reading in a bright room | Brightness, then text size. | Raise brightness only enough to separate text from the page and enlarge type if needed. |
| Reading at night | Brightness and, where available, warmth. | Reduce glare and choose a warmer tone only if your model provides it and your eyes prefer it. |
| Long-form reading | Font, size, line spacing and margins in Aa. | Balance comfortable tracking against the number of page turns. |
| Frequent handwriting | Toolbar side, pen/highlighter/eraser options and page-turn gesture. | Keep controls clear of your wrist while preserving quick access to your main tool. |
| Sharing meeting notes | Export type and recipient workflow. | Choose handwritten PDF for visual fidelity or searchable conversion when your model supports it and text search matters. |
| Low vision or navigation needs | VoiceView, font size and reading display. | Follow the model-specific accessibility guidance rather than copying another user’s setup. |
Common problems and fixes
The warmth slider is missing
Confirm the Scribe release family first. Warmth is not documented as available on every model, so an earlier or different release may simply lack that control. Install available software updates and recheck Screen and brightness; do not expect an update to add a feature Amazon limits by model.
The font controls do not appear in a book
Open the Aa menu from the top of the reading screen and check the book’s format. Fixed-layout or heavily formatted titles can restrict font, spacing or margin controls. Test another standard-flow book to distinguish a title-specific limitation from a device-wide issue.
A portion of a page will not accept writing
Remove any third-party cover and test again. If the unresponsive area disappears, the cover is interfering with the writing surface. If it remains, restart the Scribe and check whether the problem occurs in a new notebook before assuming that a single document is damaged.

Check whether your model was released in 2025 or later, because Amazon limits some searchable-PDF and conversion features to those Scribes. If your model qualifies, verify that the notebook has finished syncing and try the share controls again. Remember that the recipient’s email link remains valid for seven days only.
A sensible final setup check
After making changes, read several pages and write a short note rather than judging a setting from the menu alone. Confirm that the display remains comfortable in the lighting where you normally use the Scribe, that the toolbar does not collide with your hand, and that your chosen sharing format produces the kind of file your recipient can use. Revisit these controls after a software update or when you move between Scribe generations; Amazon’s help pages can change labels and availability as features evolve.
