For API-driven keyword research in 2026, the right choice depends on what you need to automate: an SEO platform’s keyword and competitor data, Google Ads campaign-planning metrics, or a service built for programmatic data requests. The evidence available here documents seven distinct vendors—not eight—so this comparison covers seven tools and Google Keyword Planner’s two access paths: its Ads interface and the Google Ads API. Those are eight workflows, not eight separate products.
Documentation shows what each service says its API can do and how access is described; it does not establish which has the most accurate or complete data. No independent data-quality testing is available for this comparison.
Which keyword research tools have an API?
All seven services below document API access or capabilities. Their APIs are not interchangeable: some expose SEO research data, while Google’s Keyword Planning service is designed for advertising campaign planning. The table distinguishes documented scope and access details without treating vendor descriptions as independent performance findings.

Can you automate keyword research?
Yes. An API can turn a repeatable research task into a scheduled or on-demand workflow: submit seeds or target URLs, request metrics, store the response, and use it in reporting or another system. The exact inputs and outputs depend on the service. Automation still requires engineering and operational choices, such as authentication, request handling, data storage, and monitoring usage. Those are practical implications of using documented APIs, not claims that every vendor supplies a turnkey reporting pipeline.
Start with the job, not the vendor name
- Discover ideas from seeds or URLs: Google Ads API supports keyword or URL seeds; Ahrefs documents keyword ideas; Mangools documents suggestions; Keyword Tool documents suggestions for Google and Bing.
- Analyze an existing keyword list: Google Ads API provides historical metrics for lists of up to 10,000 keywords. Mangools documents importing lists and retrieving volume, difficulty, CPC, and trend metrics.
- Include competitors or SERPs: Mangools documents competitor keyword profiles, SERP retrieval, and gap analysis. DataForSEO Labs describes keyword, SERP, and domain data; Ahrefs describes keyword metrics and ideas.
- Build reports around advertising forecasts: Google Ads API includes forecast metrics and ad group themes, which serve a campaign-planning purpose rather than a universal organic SEO difficulty score.
Plan for API maintenance
Before building, verify the current endpoint coverage, authentication method, account eligibility, quotas, and billing model. Handle rate limits and transient failures, and cache responses where the service’s documentation recommends it. Store enough context with each result—such as target location, language, date, and source—to make later reports interpretable. API documentation does not by itself establish data freshness beyond explicitly documented behavior or guarantee that a metric will remain available unchanged.

Which API is best for SEO reporting?
There is no evidence here for a universal winner on accuracy, coverage, or reliability. Choose based on the data your report needs and whether you can meet the access and usage conditions.
- For keyword metrics, history, and ideas within an SEO platform workflow: Ahrefs documents those capabilities, but API access is limited to paid API tiers and usage is metered.
- For Semrush data in a new integration: use the current v4 documentation and confirm the SEO Business access requirement. Do not base a new build on the legacy v3 Keyword Reports examples: Semrush marks those endpoints deprecated and no longer recommends them for new integrations.
- For a programmatic data-provider workflow: DataForSEO Labs is explicitly positioned as an API service for keyword, SERP, and domain data. Confirm its current limits and pricing before estimating project cost.
- For competitor profiles, SERPs, keyword gaps, and saved lists in one documented API workflow: Mangools lists these capabilities for KWFinder; verify access and quota details with its current documentation.
- For keyword suggestions and planner-attributed metrics across Google and Bing: Keyword Tool documents suggestions, search volume, CPC, and competition; its current API price and limits should be checked before committing.
Semrush’s v4 API overview covers its current API, while its v3 Keyword Reports documentation identifies the legacy endpoints as deprecated. The v4 overview was last updated August 5, 2026, and the legacy page September 1, 2026, according to the retrieved page metadata.

Can Google Keyword Planner data be accessed through an API?
Google Ads API Keyword Planning provides programmatic access to keyword ideas, ad group themes, historical metrics, and forecasts. Ideas can be generated from keywords, URLs, or both, with location, language, and network targeting. Google describes it as similar to Keyword Planner in the Google Ads interface, but the API is a campaign-planning service—not a direct substitute for every SEO platform’s organic keyword metrics.
Historical metrics and freshness
Google’s documentation, accessed October 8, 2026, allows historical-metrics requests for lists of up to 10,000 keywords. Historical search-volume metrics refresh monthly. Google says responses remain stable for hours or days and recommends caching; Keyword Planning requests are more strictly rate-limited than other Google Ads API services. Design integrations around those constraints rather than assuming real-time updates or unrestricted request volume.
Rank #4
What the metrics mean
Forecast metrics and paid-search competition help with campaign planning. They should not be presented as an all-purpose organic SEO difficulty score. The retrieved official documentation establishes features and operating caveats, but does not settle all account-eligibility or access-level questions; confirm the current Google Ads API requirements for the account you plan to use.
What do the documented prices and access gates show?
Ahrefs publishes API-tier prices; Semrush describes a plan gate and sales-led custom options. The remaining sources cited here do not establish enough current price or quota detail for a like-for-like cost comparison.
| Service | Published access information |
|---|---|
| Ahrefs API | On the Ahrefs page checked October 8, 2026, API tiers were listed at $129/month (Lite), $249/month (Standard), $449/month (Advanced), and $1,499/month (Enterprise). The tiers have differing monthly API-unit allowances and request-row limits. Free and Starter do not include API access. |
| Semrush API | The SEO Business plan is required to buy API units and generate a v4 API key; custom API options and pricing are sales-led. |
Ahrefs pricing and allowances can change, and the listed tiers do not imply that every API feature is available on every plan. For DataForSEO Labs, Keywords Everywhere, Mangools, Keyword Tool, and Google Ads API, check current official access and billing documentation before estimating cost: the sources cited above do not establish a complete comparable price or quota figure for those services.
How should you choose among the seven tools and eight workflows?
- Define the output: decide whether you need keyword discovery, metrics for an existing list, competitor research, SERPs, history, or ad forecasts.
- Match the data purpose: use Google Keyword Planning when campaign-oriented forecasts and historical advertising metrics fit the task; choose an SEO-focused service when the workflow calls for its documented SEO metrics or competitor and SERP features.
- Check the gate before prototyping: confirm plan eligibility, API units or credits, token or key requirements, quotas, and current endpoint status.
- Model the ongoing workload: account for rate limits, caching, refresh schedules, storage, and changes to vendor endpoints or plans. This is especially important for scheduled reports that must run predictably.
- Validate against your own use case: compare sample outputs for the locations, languages, and keywords you actually report on. The documentation supports capability comparisons, not a ranking of data accuracy.
The eight access paths discussed are the seven distinct vendor services above plus Google Keyword Planner through the Google Ads web interface. Google’s interface and API are two ways to use the same planning service, not separate vendors; the documented API details apply specifically to Google Ads API Keyword Planning.
