There is no defensible, benchmark-based “best” jQuery table plugin for every project. These ten candidates solve different problems, and several are not dependent on jQuery at all. DataTables is the clearest starting point when you need to enhance an existing HTML table; for editing, mobile presentation, or a dense grid, choose according to the workflow and verify current compatibility and maintenance.

The options below are grouped by project fit, not ranked by speed or overall quality. The available comparison is qualitative, not a controlled test using the same data, hardware, browser, and configuration. The 2026 comparison is useful for identifying candidates, but its scale descriptions should not be read as comparable performance measurements.

How to choose a table plugin for a jQuery project

Start with the table you have and the work users need to do. If the page already contains semantic HTML tables, an enhancer can reduce migration effort. If the interface is built from JSON or needs spreadsheet-like editing, a grid may be a better fit. Then decide whether filtering and paging should happen in the browser or on the server, how the table should behave on narrow screens, and what license and maintenance risks your team can accept.

  • Existing HTML: DataTables is oriented around enhancing HTML tables, while a grid may be more natural when the application owns the data and renders the interface from JavaScript.
  • Interaction: Distinguish sorting from global or column filtering, paging, Ajax loading, export, row selection, validation, and editing. A basic sorter is not a substitute for a CRUD interface.
  • Data scale: For large datasets, consider server-side querying or virtualization rather than relying on browser-side processing. Vendor scale labels are not a shared benchmark.
  • Mobile: Decide whether horizontal scrolling is acceptable or whether less important columns should be hidden and revealed on demand.
  • Dependencies: “Works in a jQuery project” does not necessarily mean “requires jQuery.” Check the exact package and version.
  • Long-term fit: Check current release history, supported browsers and framework versions, issue activity, migration path, and license terms before committing.

General-purpose HTML table enhancement

1. DataTables

Choose DataTables when you want to add interactive features to an existing HTML table: searching, ordering, paging, data sourcing, Ajax, and an API. Its documentation describes its goal as “To enhance the accessibility of data in HTML tables.” See the DataTables core documentation for the feature set and processing models.

DataTables 3 no longer has an external dependency, but it continues to operate with jQuery. That makes it a viable option for a jQuery application without making jQuery a requirement. The broader DataTables manual documents compatibility and extensions. Extensions can add capabilities such as editing, advanced filtering, controls, and export; check current terms before assuming an extension is included or free.

For very large data, DataTables documents server-side processing: ordering, searching, and paging are delegated to the server, which can query the database rather than asking the browser to process the complete dataset. This requires an appropriate server endpoint and implementation; it is not an automatic speed guarantee.

Grid libraries for richer interaction or dense data

2. Tabulator

Tabulator is a JavaScript table library with extensive interactive capabilities. Its core does not depend on jQuery, but the 6.x documentation offers a jQuery wrapper for projects that prefer that interface. The wrapper requires both jQuery and jQuery UI, loaded before Tabulator and its wrapper. The documentation listed version 6.5.0 at the time of review; verify the current release and setup instructions in the Tabulator 6.x jQuery support guide.

Consider it when a project needs a more configurable grid than a straightforward HTML-table enhancement. Treat the jQuery wrapper as an integration choice, not evidence that the core library is a jQuery plugin.

3. SlickGrid

SlickGrid is a candidate for dense, grid-style interfaces. The 2026 comparison identifies SlickGrid v4 and later as not requiring jQuery, so it may fit a jQuery application without being a jQuery-dependent library. The comparison does not establish a controlled performance advantage or a current maintenance status. Verify the exact package, current documentation, compatibility, and project activity before choosing it for production.

Editing and CRUD workflows

4. Handsontable

Handsontable is positioned as a spreadsheet-like, editing-oriented option. It does not require jQuery according to the 2026 comparison, so evaluate it as a JavaScript library that can be integrated into a jQuery project rather than as a dependency on jQuery. Confirm its current license and commercial terms directly with the vendor before estimating cost.

5. jsGrid

jsGrid is presented as a CRUD-oriented option, with workflows for inserting, editing, and deleting rows alongside sorting, filtering, and paging. That profile makes it worth considering when users need to change records in the table rather than merely browse them. Check current package compatibility, maintenance, and implementation details before deployment; the comparison alone does not establish their current state.

Responsive presentation and Bootstrap integration

6. FooTable

FooTable is described as a mobile-oriented approach: hide selected columns at breakpoints and let users expand a row to see the concealed values. This changes how information is presented; it does not simply shrink a wide table. Use it only if the hidden-column behavior suits the data, and confirm that the project is actively maintained before starting a new production integration.

7. Bootstrap Table

Bootstrap Table is a candidate when matching an existing Bootstrap interface is a priority. The comparison describes pagination, search, and Ajax loading, but does not establish version-specific compatibility. Check its current documentation against the Bootstrap version and styling conventions already used by the application.

Focused sorting and other specialized candidates

8. jQuery Tablesorter

For a table that mainly needs sortable columns, jQuery Tablesorter may be a simpler fit than a full grid. The comparison says its 2.0 fork adds filtering, paging, and widgets. Because fork and package details matter, confirm which distribution you intend to use and inspect its current documentation before relying on those extra features.

9. Dynatable

Dynatable is described as using JSON and HTML5 data attributes for filtering, sorting, and searching. The comparison also claims it has been unmaintained since 2014, but that status was not verified against primary release history. Treat it as a maintenance-risk candidate and check its official release history and compatibility before adopting it.

10. Herotable

Herotable appears in the comparison as an all-in-one option, with claims including sorting, search, resizing, column visibility controls, and footer calculations. Those capabilities and its maintenance status were not independently confirmed against primary documentation. Verify that the project is active, that the listed features exist in the version you would deploy, and that its license fits your use before selecting it.

Which option fits common requirements?

Project requirement Candidate to evaluate Important qualification
Enhance an existing HTML table with searching, ordering, and paging DataTables DataTables 3 has no external dependency but continues to work with jQuery; extensions may have separate terms.
Use a JavaScript grid with an optional jQuery integration Tabulator The 6.x jQuery wrapper requires jQuery and jQuery UI; the core does not require jQuery.
Support server-side search, ordering, and paging for large data DataTables Server-side processing requires a server implementation; no comparative benchmark establishes a universal row-count threshold.
Provide a spreadsheet-like editing experience Handsontable It does not require jQuery; confirm current commercial licensing.
Manage record insertion, editing, and deletion jsGrid Verify current compatibility and maintenance.
Rework a wide table for mobile screens FooTable Its described approach hides columns and reveals values when a row expands; verify maintenance.
Match an existing Bootstrap UI Bootstrap Table Check compatibility with the application’s Bootstrap version.
Add sorting with a comparatively focused tool jQuery Tablesorter Check the exact fork/package if filtering, paging, or widgets are needed.

What “best” means for this list

These ten options are a candidate set, not an objective top ten. They also are not all jQuery plugins in the dependency sense: the comparison says Tabulator v5 and later, Handsontable, and SlickGrid v4 and later can run without jQuery. A library can still be suitable for a jQuery-based application without depending on jQuery itself.

No common benchmark establishes which option is fastest at a particular row count. Performance depends on data shape, rendering, browser, configuration, and whether work is done in the browser or on a server. For a production choice, test the actual interactions and data path your application will use, and confirm current releases, licenses, and compatibility from the project documentation.
