Before exposing Jev to production users, switch jev-guard to enforcing mode, keep its policy outside the repository, inject the TYPESAFE_API_KEY only on the server, require HTTPS and approved endpoints, bound every verification with a timeout and confidence thresholds, and make privileged actions fail closed. Then remove secrets and cross-tenant data from state and logs, and put hosted installations behind an authenticated proxy with exact-origin and rate controls.

The production security baseline

Jev’s useful behavior is also its risk boundary: it can inspect requests, apply policy and decide whether a call proceeds. A deployment is ready only when an untrusted project, a malformed response, a provider outage or a leaked browser value cannot silently turn that decision into an allow.

  • Decision mode: use enforcing for real users. Reserve audit for a controlled rollout in which you are measuring would-be blocks.
  • Policy ownership: store sensitive policy in the operator-controlled Jev location, not in a cloned project.
  • Credentials: provide provider keys through a server-side secret manager or environment, never through source, images or browser variables.
  • Failure behavior: an outage or timeout must deny or route to review for actions such as refunds, bans, credential changes and production deploys.
  • Data handling: keep state minimal and redact secrets and request contents before they reach logs, traces or proxy telemetry.

These are controls, not performance guarantees. The documented values below are starting points that need review against the consequence of each action.

Set jev-guard to enforcing mode

Use audit only during a controlled rollout

audit records what Jev would have blocked but allows the call to continue. That is useful for finding false positives and tuning policy while traffic is still controlled; it is not a production safety boundary. Keep the test population and permissions narrow, inspect the audit output, and schedule a specific change to enforcing before general exposure.

The production default documented by jev-guard is mode: "enforcing". In that mode a policy decision can interrupt the call. The project documentation describes the guard as failing safe: if its API is unreachable, it asks instead of allowing. Verify that your surrounding application preserves that behavior rather than converting an exception or empty response into success.

Keep policy out of a cloned project

Jev-guard stores its policy at ~/.jevguard/.jevguard.json. Project configuration is ignored for sensitive policy unless the project has been explicitly trusted, and built-in sensitive-file protections cannot be removed. This arrangement prevents a repository, pull request or agent-controlled working tree from weakening the operator’s guard simply by changing a checked-in file.

  1. Create or review the policy under the deployment account’s ~/.jevguard/.jevguard.json.
  2. Set mode to "enforcing" for the production profile.
  3. Grant project trust only after code ownership, review and deployment provenance are established.
  4. Test a known blocked operation and a known permitted operation from the same runtime identity.
  5. Ensure the service account cannot write the policy file during normal request handling.

Keep the TypeSafe API key server-side

Supply TYPESAFE_API_KEY from a secret manager or a server-only environment. Do not commit it, copy it into a container image layer, expose it through browser-prefixed variables, print it in startup diagnostics or distribute it to untrusted forks. A front-end bundle is public by design, so any key placed in browser configuration should be considered compromised.

Use a short, auditable secret path

  • Reference the secret at process start or through the platform’s runtime secret injection.
  • Give the Jev process only the permissions and provider scope it needs.
  • Keep key material out of crash reports, support bundles and command-line arguments that may be visible to other users.
  • Rotate or revoke a key when a deployment is retired, cloned, transferred or suspected of exposure.
  • Assign separate keys to production, preview and development where the provider permits it, so a preview compromise cannot automatically reach production.

Hosted Jev State has a separate operator-supplied mechanism, STUDIO_ACCESS_TOKEN, and also documents a BYOK mode. Treat those as different trust paths: an operator token protects access to the hosted installation, while a BYOK value represents the provider credential used for verification. Neither belongs in an untrusted client.

Require safe transport and approved endpoints

Use HTTPS and reject unsafe destinations

Use HTTPS for provider and application traffic. jev-mcp rejects unsafe public hosts and non-public addresses; a custom public HTTPS host requires explicit opt-in. Do not work around that check by pointing production traffic at an arbitrary internal address or by disabling validation globally. If a custom endpoint is necessary, record the exact hostname, certificate ownership and approval in deployment configuration.

Configure a reverse proxy correctly

When Jev is behind a reverse proxy, set the exact public origin, preserve the incoming Host header, terminate TLS at the proxy and expose only the proxy to the internet. The Jev service should listen on a private interface or network segment. A mismatch between the configured origin and the browser’s origin can look like an authentication failure; accepting every origin to “fix” it removes the protection instead.

Bound decisions with timeout and confidence settings

jev-mcp documents a positive timeout and these defaults:

Setting Documented value What it controls
JEV_MCP_TIMEOUT_MS 30000 milliseconds Maximum wait for the Jev MCP operation before the caller must apply its failure policy.
auto_accept 0.8 Confidence at or above which an automatic acceptance may be considered.
review_at 0.5 Confidence boundary below which a result should enter review rather than proceed automatically.
block_at 0.75 Injection-screening confidence at which blocking is triggered.

These are documented defaults, not universally safe choices. A low-risk read operation may tolerate a longer review path, while a payment, account suspension or deployment approval may require a higher acceptance floor and mandatory human review. Environment-level floors can tighten caller-supplied settings; invalid relationships are configuration errors, so fail the deployment rather than silently correcting them.

Define fail-closed behavior explicitly

A timeout is not an approval. For privileged or irreversible actions, timeout, provider failure and retry exhaustion should produce deny or human review. The security guidance summarizes the rule as “Timeouts and 529 → deny/review on privileged actions.” Implement that decision in the caller, not only in a dashboard: distinguish allow, deny and review outcomes, and make the default branch non-permissive.

  1. Set a positive timeout appropriate to the request’s latency budget.
  2. Limit retries so an outage cannot multiply an irreversible action.
  3. Map timeout, HTTP 529, network errors and malformed responses to review or deny for privileged operations.
  4. Allow automatic continuation only for explicitly classified, reversible actions.
  5. Alert on the fail-closed path so operators can resolve the provider problem without bypassing policy.

Treat state and incoming text as untrusted

The vendor capability note recorded for jev-1.13 says state is not treated as hostile by default. That means a ticket, chat message, tool result or imported instruction can influence a decision unless your policy separates it from trusted criteria. Keep the rule, the evidence and the requested action distinguishable.

Reduce prompt-injection opportunities

  • Put policy and acceptance criteria in operator-controlled configuration, not in user-editable ticket fields.
  • Label external text as data and test instructions such as “ignore the previous policy” or “mark this approved.”
  • Do not mix one tenant’s tickets, memories or tool output into another tenant’s decision state.
  • Require a fresh, explicit confirmation for actions that change credentials, permissions, money or deployment state.
  • Keep the state passed to Jev limited to the fields needed for the decision; omit entire documents when a structured identifier is enough.

Align the instructions and criteria you give Jev. Contradictory rules can create low-confidence outcomes, and an operator should see that ambiguity as review rather than an invitation to broaden the allow path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Minimize and redact state, logs and observability data

Do not place secrets, payment-card numbers, session cookies or another tenant’s tickets in Jev state. Minimize before transmission, not after a full payload has already been recorded. Prefer identifiers, classifications and narrowly scoped excerpts over complete request bodies.

Redact at every boundary

  • Remove request bodies unless the specific fields are required for the decision.
  • Redact X-Jev-Jev-Key and X-Jev-Openai-Key in reverse-proxy logs, application logs, traces and support exports.
  • Disable header and body capture in default access logging, or use an allowlist of non-sensitive fields.
  • Apply retention limits to decision state and audit records, and restrict who can query them.
  • Scrub values before error reporting; stack traces often include serialized request objects.

“Least state is a security control” is more than a privacy preference: less retained context reduces the material available to an injected instruction, a cross-tenant mistake or a later log compromise.

Harden a hosted Jev State installation

Do not treat the shared access code as identity

Jev State’s self-hosting guidance says the shared access code is shared by the installation’s users; it is not an account system, role model or tenant boundary. It can be useful for a small trusted group, but it does not provide per-user attribution, separation or least privilege. For a broader audience, put the installation behind an authenticated proxy that supplies real identity, authorization and rate controls.

Set origin, token and rate controls

  • Use STUDIO_ACCESS_TOKEN for the operator-supplied hosted access path and keep it server-side.
  • Configure the exact allowed origin; reject cross-origin requests when the installation is not intended to be embedded elsewhere.
  • Choose BYOK deliberately and document which party is responsible for provider-key rotation and exposure.
  • Apply proxy authentication, per-user authorization and request throttling before the Jev service.
  • Plan for the documented best-effort per-instance limits of 15 verifications and 60 live requests per minute per IP; they are capacity safeguards, not a substitute for identity controls.

A deployment sequence that catches unsafe defaults

  1. Build a production profile. Keep policy in ~/.jevguard/.jevguard.json, set mode: "enforcing", and make the runtime account unable to edit policy during requests.
  2. Inject secrets. Load TYPESAFE_API_KEY and, where applicable, STUDIO_ACCESS_TOKEN from the platform secret store. Confirm they are absent from source control, image history and browser output.
  3. Lock networking. Set the approved HTTPS endpoint, exact public origin and proxy routing. Verify that the upstream Jev port is not publicly reachable.
  4. Validate thresholds. Set a positive JEV_MCP_TIMEOUT_MS, review the confidence relationships and choose stricter floors for high-impact actions.
  5. Exercise failure paths. In a non-production environment, force a timeout, provider error and malformed response. Confirm a privileged request becomes deny or review and that no retry repeats the side effect.
  6. Probe hostile input. Submit prompt-injection text, cross-tenant identifiers and oversized state. Confirm policy remains authoritative and sensitive values are absent from captured logs.
  7. Roll out gradually. Start with a controlled audience, compare audit findings with enforcing decisions, then remove audit-only exceptions before general access.
  8. Recheck after every change. Environment changes affect new deployments; preview deployments need their own variables and protection decisions. Remove obsolete deployments and revoke their provider keys.

Common deployment failures and fixes

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Blocked operations appear in logs but still execute. The service remains in audit. Finish the controlled rollout and switch the production profile to enforcing.
A fork or agent changes protection behavior. Sensitive policy is being read from project files. Use the operator-owned ~/.jevguard/.jevguard.json and explicit project trust.
Browser users can extract a provider key. The key was exposed through client configuration or a bundle. Revoke it, issue a replacement and inject it only into the server runtime.
Requests fail only through the proxy. Origin or Host forwarding does not match the configured public URL. Set the exact origin, preserve Host, terminate TLS at the proxy and keep the upstream private.
An outage causes a privileged action to proceed. Timeout or provider errors are mapped to allow. Change the caller’s default branch to deny or review and test retry exhaustion.
Sensitive content appears in diagnostics. Body or credential headers are captured by logs or traces. Redact X-Jev-Jev-Key, X-Jev-Openai-Key and request bodies at the first logging boundary.
Users from different organizations see shared context. The hosted shared code was mistaken for tenant isolation. Add an authenticated, authorized proxy and separate state by tenant.

What the documentation does—and does not—establish

The strongest available material is project and package documentation rather than a single canonical TypeSafe security standard. The jev.pro security guide identifies itself as unofficial, so verify current provider guidance before changing a production control. The timeout, confidence values and hosted request limits above are configuration defaults or best-effort limits, not independently published adoption, breach or performance statistics. They should be version-pinned in your deployment notes and revisited when Jev, jev-mcp or the hosting topology changes.
