There is no safe “turn everything on” Jetpack preset. Enable only the features that match your site’s risks and workflows, then confirm your Jetpack plan, WordPress.com connection, hosting environment and existing plugins can support them. For most sites, that means reviewing Firewall, Downtime Monitor, backups and any performance, statistics or audience tools you actually need; disabling unused features from Jetpack’s Features page.
Start with a site-specific Jetpack checklist
Jetpack groups settings into tabs and provides search, so you can review one capability at a time instead of enabling a large bundle blindly. The first decision is not which switch looks useful; it is which operational problem you need Jetpack to solve.
Inventory what is already covered
Write down your current host services and WordPress plugins for security, malware scanning, spam filtering, uptime alerts, backups, caching, image delivery, analytics, related posts and social publishing. A second tool can be useful for independent coverage, but duplicate systems may create conflicting rules, duplicate alerts or unnecessary overhead. Check whether your host blocks a feature before troubleshooting the Jetpack setting itself.

Use the Features page as the cleanup step
After connecting Jetpack, open the Jetpack settings area, review each tab or search for a feature, and turn off capabilities you do not use. Jetpack’s Getting Started documentation states that individual features can be disabled through the Features page. Removing unused modules gives administrators a shorter, more understandable configuration and reduces the chance that a forgotten feature sends alerts or changes site behavior.

Record the decision
For each enabled feature, note its purpose, plan requirement, notification recipient and fallback tool. This is especially important for sites with several administrators: a feature can be active while its messages go to an account nobody checks.

Security settings: Firewall, scanning and spam protection
Firewall: enable it only with a clear rule strategy
Jetpack Firewall examines incoming traffic and can allow or block requests according to rules. The official Web Application Firewall documentation says it is deactivated by default when Jetpack is connected to a WordPress.com account. Connecting Jetpack alone therefore does not mean the firewall is protecting the site.
Automatic firewall rules require a WordPress.com connection and an eligible paid plan: Jetpack Security, Jetpack Complete or Jetpack Scan. If your plan does not qualify, you may still see firewall controls but should not assume that automatic rules are active. Check the plan shown in your Jetpack account before relying on this protection.
Turn on automatic rules
- Connect Jetpack to the WordPress.com account used to administer the site.
- Open Jetpack → Settings → Security and locate the Firewall section.
- Confirm that the site has Jetpack Security, Jetpack Complete or Jetpack Scan.
- Activate the firewall and allow the automatic rules to populate.
- Test normal administrator, editor and visitor workflows, including forms, checkout and API integrations.
Do not treat the firewall as a substitute for secure passwords, updates, least-privilege accounts or host-level controls. It filters incoming requests; it does not repair compromised files or guarantee that every attack is stopped.
Use manual IP rules cautiously
Manual rules can block specified IP addresses. Before adding one, verify the address, document why it is being blocked and consider whether it belongs to a shared office, mobile carrier, VPN, monitoring service, payment provider or legitimate customer. A mistaken rule can lock out your own administrators or disrupt a third-party integration. Keep a recovery administrator account and a record of changes so a rule can be removed if access fails.
Review malware scanning and spam protection separately
Jetpack’s protection overview lists malware scanning and Akismet spam protection as distinct capabilities. Malware scanning addresses suspicious code or files; spam protection addresses unwanted comments and other submissions. Confirm which capability your plan and configuration include, then compare it with your host’s scanner and any anti-spam plugin. Avoid enabling two systems that both quarantine, delete or rewrite the same content without understanding their order of operation.

Downtime Monitor: the low-cost setting most sites can use
Jetpack’s Downtime Monitor is documented as a free feature and does not require a Jetpack plan. It does require a working Jetpack connection, so a disconnected site cannot reliably send monitoring results.

- In WordPress, open Jetpack → Settings → Security.
- Turn on Downtime Monitor.
- Confirm the WordPress.com account that originally connected the site.
- Trigger or wait for a test notification according to the options shown in your dashboard.
- If the team uses mobile apps, enable push notifications for the responsible administrator.
Email notifications go only to the WordPress.com account that originally connected the site. Adding another WordPress administrator does not automatically add that person to the email list. If the original connector has left the organization or rarely checks mail, reconnect or transfer administration through the documented WordPress.com account process rather than assuming alerts are reaching the on-call person.
Monitor alerts indicate that Jetpack detected a reachability problem; they do not identify every cause. Check DNS, hosting status, certificates, server resources, firewall rules and recent deployments when an alert arrives.
Backups: enable VaultPress Backup when recovery is a requirement
Backups are appropriate when the site contains irreplaceable posts, customer data, orders, configuration or frequent editorial work. VaultPress Backup requires an eligible plan, a working Jetpack connection, the Jetpack plugin or standalone VaultPress Backup plugin, and at least one theme or plugin from the WordPress.org repository.
Plans and prerequisites
The documented plans that include backups are VaultPress Backup, Jetpack Security and Jetpack Complete. Verify the plan attached to this specific site; having another Jetpack feature or a different site subscription does not establish backup coverage here. Before activation, confirm that the plugin can connect outbound and that your host permits the required file and database access.
VaultPress Backup is not available for WordPress multisite installations. A multisite network therefore needs a backup approach that explicitly supports network databases, uploads and site-level restoration rather than assuming a single-site Jetpack workflow will work.

What the backup includes
The documentation says VaultPress Backup copies the WordPress database, key site directories, and WooCommerce products and orders. That coverage is valuable for both content and commerce, but you should still identify external assets, host-managed files, third-party storage and deployment repositories that are outside WordPress.
Understand the schedule
Backups occur at least daily and also after certain events, including publishing or updating posts and installing or updating themes and plugins. The documented daily frequency cannot be changed to an hourly or weekly schedule. If your site needs a shorter recovery-point interval, evaluate a separate system designed for that requirement instead of searching Jetpack for an unavailable schedule control.
Confirm that recovery is practical
- Open the backup area after the connection and plan checks succeed.
- Confirm that recent backup events show the expected database, files and store data.
- Review the available restore points and who is authorized to use them.
- Document how you would restore after a failed update, accidental deletion or host outage.
- For a high-value site, perform a controlled restoration test in a staging or temporary environment.
A backup is only useful if an administrator can locate it and restore the right version without damaging newer work. Keep credentials and recovery instructions available to more than one trusted person.

Pantheon file-system limitation
Jetpack’s known-issues documentation says VaultPress Backup and Scan do not work on Pantheon because of file-system access restrictions. If the site is hosted there, do not keep retrying the same Jetpack switch expecting a configuration change to solve it. Choose a backup and scanning method supported by that environment.
WP Engine backup credentials
WP Engine users need to add server credentials for VaultPress Backup. If backup setup pauses for credentials, obtain the required values from the hosting account and follow the host-specific procedure. Do not paste credentials into unrelated Jetpack fields or share them in support tickets that do not require them.
When to contact the host
Jetpack support notes that some server, firewall, DNS, speed and performance matters fall outside product support. If the host blocks outbound requests, modifies PHP execution, restricts file access or filters DNS, the host may need to change the environment. Collect the exact error, timestamp, affected URL and recent host changes before opening a ticket.

Performance, statistics, content and audience features
Jetpack also contains tools for performance, site statistics, related content, sharing, subscriptions and other audience workflows. Their usefulness depends on the site’s goals rather than on a universal recommendation.

Before enabling a performance module, identify the bottleneck it is intended to address and check whether your host already provides caching, image optimization or a content-delivery layer. Run a representative test before and after activation, including logged-in editing, forms and checkout. If the module duplicates host functionality or causes stale content, disable it and keep the tool that gives you clearer control.
Enable statistics only if someone will use them
Site statistics are worthwhile when an editor has questions the reports can answer, such as which content attracts readers or whether a campaign produced visits. Define the metrics and reporting owner first. A dashboard that nobody reviews adds complexity without improving decisions.
Enable content and audience tools around an editorial workflow
Related content, sharing, subscriptions and social-publishing features should match how your team publishes and communicates. Check output on mobile devices, confirm that subscription messages go to the intended audience and look for conflicts with SEO, social-sharing or newsletter plugins. Keep one system responsible for each repeated task whenever possible.
A safe order for changing Jetpack settings
- Check the connection. Make sure Jetpack is connected to the correct WordPress.com account and that the connection is healthy.
- Check the plan. Verify whether the feature is free, included in your plan or restricted to an eligible paid plan.
- Check the host. Read host-specific restrictions, especially for backups, scanning, credentials and outbound requests.
- Check for duplicates. Identify plugins and host tools that already provide the same function.
- Enable one feature. Change one setting at a time so a side effect can be identified.
- Test normal use. Log in, publish, submit forms, place a test order if applicable and check integrations.
- Verify alerts or data. Confirm that the intended person receives notifications and that reports or backup events appear.
- Document and review. Record the reason, date and owner, then revisit settings after major plugin, host or plan changes.

Recommended baseline by site type
Small brochure or portfolio site
Consider Downtime Monitor first, because it is free and useful even when the site has modest traffic. Add backups if the content would be costly to recreate. Review firewall, scanning, statistics and performance tools only when you can identify a specific need and confirm compatibility.

Prioritize backups and Downtime Monitor, then verify that backup events occur after publishing and plugin or theme updates. Add protection features according to the plan and the site’s existing security stack. Document who receives alerts and who can restore content.

WooCommerce store
Backups deserve particular attention because the documented coverage includes WooCommerce products and orders. Test restoration procedures, avoid overlapping caching or security rules that could break checkout, and make sure monitoring alerts reach the person responsible for transactions.
Multisite network
Do not enable VaultPress Backup expecting it to cover the network; the backup page is not available for multisite installations. Select a network-compatible backup design and evaluate security and monitoring at both network and site levels.
How to decide what stays enabled
Keep a Jetpack feature enabled when it has a named owner, solves a current problem, fits the plan and host, produces information or protection you can act on, and does not conflict with another system. Disable it when nobody uses the output, the host cannot support it, the plan does not include the required capability, or another tool performs the same job more reliably. Recheck the dashboard after major WordPress, plugin, host or Jetpack plan changes because labels, defaults and compatibility conditions can change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Jetpack Firewall enabled automatically when I connect Jetpack?
No. Jetpack’s documentation says the firewall is deactivated by default after connection. Automatic firewall rules also require a WordPress.com connection and an eligible Jetpack Security, Jetpack Complete or Jetpack Scan plan.
Does Downtime Monitor require a paid Jetpack plan?
