Start with the controls that prevent accidental exposure: enable IPVanish’s kill switch, then check your phone’s always-on VPN and “block connections without VPN” controls where the operating system provides them. Review split tunneling next, because every app or destination you exclude from the tunnel loses VPN protection. A RAM-only server filter can be useful for choosing eligible infrastructure, but it is not a replacement for a kill switch or leak controls.
IPVanish’s menus and feature behavior differ by platform. Use the current in-app help or IPVanish support documentation for the exact labels on your device rather than applying a universal click path.
Change the settings that prevent accidental exposure first
Enable the kill switch
A kill switch is the highest-priority privacy setting when your concern is traffic escaping during a VPN interruption. Its purpose is to block network traffic when the encrypted VPN connection drops, instead of silently allowing the device to continue over the ordinary internet connection.
IPVanish offers a kill switch on major platforms, but the implementation and setup are not identical. A 2026 Tom’s Guide review describes Android protection as potentially requiring device-level configuration and notes a reported interaction between split tunneling and the macOS kill switch. Those findings are useful warnings, not a substitute for current IPVanish instructions. Confirm the behavior for your app version and operating system before relying on it.

After enabling the control, read its description carefully. Some applications use wording that refers only to the IPVanish app, while an operating-system control can affect all device traffic. Do not assume that a visible toggle blocks every connection in every failure state.
Check Android or other mobile operating-system controls
Some mobile operating systems expose separate settings for an always-on VPN and for blocking connections that do not use the VPN. When those controls are available, review both the IPVanish app’s current guidance and the operating system’s VPN settings. The app toggle and the system policy may have different scopes, and one can remain enabled while the other is not.
Use the system-level block-without-VPN option when you need the operating system itself to enforce the rule. Check for exceptions such as local-network access or applications excluded from the tunnel. The exact labels and location vary by operating-system release, so follow the current device-specific instructions rather than an older screenshot.

Split tunneling sends selected applications or destinations outside the VPN while the rest of the device uses the tunnel. It can solve practical problems, such as reaching a service that rejects VPN addresses or keeping a local device-discovery function working. The trade-off is absolute: traffic excluded from the tunnel does not receive VPN tunnel protection.
Audit every exception
Before adding an app to an exclusion list, identify the data it handles. Banking, work, messaging, browser, and cloud-storage traffic may reveal account activity or personal information when sent directly. If an app is excluded for troubleshooting, treat that as a temporary exception and remove it when the problem is resolved.

Keep a short record of which apps are excluded and why. This prevents an old exception from becoming a permanent privacy blind spot after an app update or a change in your routine.
Check the kill-switch interaction on macOS
The Tom’s Guide review specifically reports an interaction between split tunneling and the macOS kill switch. That means you should not assume that enabling both produces the same result as enabling either feature alone. Before using this combination for sensitive work, verify the current IPVanish documentation for your macOS app version and understand whether excluded traffic remains available when the VPN disconnects.
If the documentation is unclear, choose the safer configuration for your use case: keep the kill switch active and remove unnecessary split-tunnel exceptions. A connection failure is inconvenient; an unplanned direct connection can expose traffic you intended to protect.
Use the RAM-only server filter as an infrastructure preference
TechRadar reported on April 21, 2026 that IPVanish introduced a RAM-only server filter across its supported apps. The filter is a way to select servers that meet that infrastructure description. It is not a universal privacy switch and does not, by itself, block traffic when the VPN disconnects.
RAM-only describes how a server stores operational data: information held in volatile memory is expected to disappear when the machine loses power or restarts, rather than remaining on a persistent disk. That characteristic may matter to users who want to choose among servers with that design, but it does not establish anonymity, prevent browser tracking, or protect traffic that split tunneling sends outside the VPN.

When to select RAM-only servers
- Use the filter if it is visible in your current IPVanish app and you specifically want to restrict server selection to that category.
- Keep the kill switch and any appropriate leak-prevention controls configured independently.
- Do not infer that every location has a RAM-only server or that availability is identical on Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and other platforms.
Current availability should be checked in the app or support center. The April 2026 product coverage does not establish a universal list of locations or plan eligibility.

Understand what IPVanish’s no-logs statement covers
On April 10, 2025, IPVanish announced that Schellman had independently audited its no-logs policy. The announcement says the audit found no logging of internet activity, traffic metadata, DNS queries, or accessed services. Treat that conclusion as the company’s description of the audit; the announcement is not the auditor’s complete report.
The same announcement distinguishes activity records from account administration. IPVanish says it retains account details such as an email address and payment information. Therefore, “no logs” should be read narrowly: it addresses the categories covered by the policy and audit, not a promise that the provider holds no information of any kind.
What this means for your settings
A no-logs policy does not make a kill switch unnecessary. The policy concerns what the provider says it records; the kill switch concerns what happens on your device when the tunnel fails. Likewise, choosing a RAM-only server does not change the account information you provide or replace controls that keep traffic inside the tunnel.
Keep the VPN’s threat model realistic
A VPN can protect the network connection between your device and the VPN service, but it is not a complete security suite. Subbu Sthanu, IPVanish’s General Manager of Consumer Cybersecurity, put the limitation plainly: “It protects your Internet connections and your privacy, but does not shield you from malicious downloads, fake login pages, and other threats.”

That distinction matters when deciding what to change. A kill switch can stop traffic during a tunnel failure; it cannot tell whether a website is a phishing copy. A RAM-only server can describe server infrastructure; it cannot inspect an attachment for malware. Split tunneling can make one application work; it can also place that application outside the VPN’s protection.
Use separate protection for endpoint threats
TechRadar reported on October 8, 2026 that IPVanish was expanding security features, including antivirus integrated into its Windows and macOS desktop clients. Consider that a separate protection layer, not an inherent property of the VPN connection. The available evidence does not establish which plans include it, whether it is enabled by default, or whether the feature is available on every desktop version.
Continue to use ordinary defenses: keep the operating system and applications updated, verify website addresses before entering credentials, and avoid opening unexpected downloads. No VPN setting can substitute for those habits.

Change settings safely on any platform
Because current menu paths are not established consistently across platforms, use this device-neutral procedure and confirm each label against the help built into your app.

Note whether you are using Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, or another supported platform, along with the IPVanish app version and operating-system release. Feature names and defaults can change between versions.
- Update before configuring. Install the current app version offered for your device. An old installation may show different controls or lack newer server-selection options.
- Open the app’s settings area. Look under headings such as connection, privacy, or security. Do not infer that a setting exists merely because another platform has it.
- Enable the kill switch where available. Read the accompanying description and note whether it applies to all traffic or only traffic managed by the app.
- Review operating-system enforcement on mobile. In the device’s VPN settings, check for always-on VPN and block-without-VPN controls. Match their exceptions to the apps you actually need to reach directly.
- Audit split tunneling. Remove exclusions you no longer need. For every remaining exception, record what data the app handles and acknowledge that its traffic is outside the VPN tunnel.
- Choose RAM-only servers only if the filter is present. Treat the filter as a server-selection preference. Keep it separate from your decision about interruption protection.
- Check the resulting status indicators. Confirm that the app shows the expected connection state and that the operating system does not report a conflicting VPN policy. If behavior is unclear, consult current IPVanish support instructions before using the connection for sensitive activity.
- Recheck after major updates. App redesigns, operating-system upgrades, and changes to split-tunnel rules can alter defaults or interactions. Review the settings again rather than assuming they persisted unchanged.
Troubleshoot the situations users commonly encounter
Internet access stops when the VPN drops
That can be the intended result of a working kill switch. Check whether the VPN is disconnected, whether the operating system’s block-without-VPN rule is active, and whether a split-tunnel exception is involved. Do not disable the kill switch simply to restore connectivity until you understand which traffic it is blocking.

An application still connects directly
Inspect split-tunnel rules first. An excluded application is expected to bypass the VPN. Remove the exclusion if the application should use the tunnel, then reconnect and check the app’s current status. If the application is not excluded, consult platform-specific support material because feature behavior is not uniform.
Android settings do not match the app
Review both layers: the IPVanish configuration and the operating system’s always-on or block-without-VPN policy. A system rule can override ordinary app behavior, while an app setting may not provide the same all-device coverage as the operating-system control.
The RAM-only option is missing
The filter is not documented as universal across every device, version, or location. Update the app, check the current server-selection screen, and consult IPVanish support. Do not treat the missing filter as evidence that the connection lacks a kill switch or other privacy controls.

Neither the kill switch nor a server-infrastructure filter is designed to identify phishing pages or malicious downloads. Verify the site independently, avoid unexpected files, and use a current endpoint-security product. Any IPVanish antivirus feature should be evaluated as a separate desktop security component.
Settings you should not assume are identical
Current platform-specific evidence is incomplete for DNS leak protection, trusted-network behavior, protocol choices, exact defaults, and split-tunnel availability. Do not publish or follow a universal path for those controls without checking the current IPVanish help center for your device. The absence of a documented option on one platform does not prove that it is unavailable everywhere, and the presence of a toggle does not prove that it has the same scope on another operating system.
The practical order remains consistent even when the menus are not: prevent accidental exposure with the kill switch and any relevant operating-system enforcement, make split tunneling an intentional exception, use RAM-only selection only as an infrastructure preference, and treat malware and phishing defenses as separate from the VPN.
